First we have a saber toothed deer. Now a saber toothed salmon. Starting to think that's a semi common convergent evolution trait. I loved that Orca story. I grew up alongside Kakio at the Oregon coast aquarium in the 90's-00's
@Big-Chungus21
@Big-Chungus21 2 ай бұрын
It is a fairly simple and common trait to convergently evolve. “Saber tooth” is a term used to say “large canines” or similar tooth (I don’t think salmons have canines haha). Evolving larger teeth is similar to evolving larger and smaller muscles or limbs, ears, noses etc so in my opinion isn’t anything as especially unique as convergently evolved body plans or camera-type eyes. I guess the interesting part of convergent evolution between the salmon and deer would be the exact reason - to fight off predators and compete with mates, for which this does at first seem to be unique to the salmon and deer. However, there are other animals like mandrills and baboons (super unique case of convergent evolution in its own right), even chimpanzees that also have this trait, alongside it also being useful for those purposes in most predatory mammals like dogs and cats. You could also include animals like boar for animals that evolve sharp teeth for defence.

A 2meter long Salmon would be a very big fish for swimming up stream. I never bought the idea that T. Rex was smart. I don't think there was any explanation of a evolutionary pressure pushing them in that direction. A big brain costs a lot to run. Stronger chompers would bring more ability to eat. Those two features would be competing in the weight and balance stuff of T Rex. If the head gets heavier, something has to get lighter in front of the hips or the tail has to get bigger.

Great video! Always fun to see one of my finds being featured, in 2011 my dad and I visited the Gateway quarry where these salmon were found and located several salmon. We contacted the University of Oregon and excavated them, finding intact skulls. Later excavations at the site revealed more skulls. The Gateway Quarry in Oregon is the only known breeding site for the giant salmon and it's likely these fish died after breeding as modern pacific salmon do. We continue to do excavations at this quarry and there are some exciting new discoveries there I'm not at liberty to talk about 😉

The way i see it, is you have to kinda ask if it makes biological/ecological sense that a Trex has baboon like inteligence. Does it seem to be doing anything that requires a baboon like inteligence? - probably not. Also if you're using phylogenetic bracketing and brain shapes most therapods match closer to modern crocs than modern birds. And modern crocodilians keep proving themselves a surprisingly high 'low bracket' for inteligence demonstrating novel behaviours and nuianced social heirachies.

So disappointed they were not really spiders! Relieved about Brave Little Hunter! Have joined on this account, as it is more convenient than my previous subscription. You're a godsend, I can be really lazy and allow you to keep me up to date with what's going on. I appreciate that animal behaviour can be extrapolated from brain size and intelligence, however I think one can get too hung up on it, and as a lay person I am not entirely sure about what intelligence in other animals (living and extinct) is based upon. I hope it isn't on our own intelligence, a survival characteristic which appears to be coming to the end of its usefulness with our apparent inability to carry on adapting as a species. I hope you can assure me that it is a combination of ignorance and pessimism on my part and that our outlook is brighter than I think! Not your area of expertise I know, just a personal worry.

Personally I always like to see it when certain extinct animals turned out to be less fearsome or got “nerfed” down than what humans initially thought I personally loved the finding that Dunkleosteus was smaller and shorter in reality. Now I love the study that tyrannosaurs were not as smart as monkeys but less intelligent and the study on the spike-toothed giant salmon
