This award-winning documentary from Ivory Coast follows a group of young men who undergo an ancient coming-of-age ceremony in a remote West African forest.
Their spiritual tutor is struggling to preserve the tradition of the Generation Festival at a time when young local men are increasingly indifferent to these ancestral rituals.
Thanks to his efforts, ancient custom prevails and many young men in their early twenties take part in a gruelling three-week endurance test of physical and mental prowess.

As Africans we have such beautiful traditions and cultures. It’s crazy how we don’t cherish those traditions more and make them mainstream but instead we choose to glorify western cultures.

Many traditional cultures have been eclipsed by white colonialists. Because they colonized the minds of people and make traditional cultural practices feel inferior to white colonial culture. To move forward we have to decolonize our minds.

I see a lot of critics in the comments. For me nobody has the right to judge people's culture or traditions. All I see in this documentary is how the old, ancient African traditions was teaching the young men how to leave together respectfully, how to create strong bonds with each other and how to learn and discover yourself. I'm sure if it was about a Scout camp most of you would say something else.

Same as your country, we all speak our different African languages, but in school and at work we all speak french because other tribes would have a hard time understanding eachother. There are so many Black americans ditching christianity because we’ve realized how much power was stripped away from us when our ancestors were forced out of their traditions. What I read: for a girl to become a women this happens naturally through her period. Obviously males don't bleed so they invented elaborate rituals to mark the transition from childhood to manhood. If you hear someone saying "Be a man" or "Become a man!" that seems to be rooted in such tradition. You'll never hear someone saying "Women up!" though. She automatically assumes her role in society as a "women", once here period sets in.

French is a useful tool for us Africans to advance globally. It's okay to speak French and native language. Bilingualism is part of why we Africans have the fastest growing economies right now.

@@monsieurpatate1573 Despite how innocent this documentary comes across, it is part of propaganda to maintain around the world, the idea that, Africans are backwards and primitive. Think about it, have you ever seen a documentary about Sub Saharan African showing anything else other than rural Poverty, tribal life and civil wars ? For people whose only source of information about Africa lies in Western media, how can you expect them to believe Africa has anything better to offer ? Yet, Sub Saharan Africa has a lot more to offer and over half of the population do not live in those conditions, some of them live in vibrant cities with excellent infrastructure and many more are springing up. Some Sub-Saharan countries have made tremendous economic progress over the last decade achieving very high HDIs like Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, another example is the city of Kigali in Rwanda which has been dubbed the cleanest city in Africa, why aren't such positive stories shown in the Western media ? This is why people around the world still think Africa is nothing but a collective of mud huts and jungles, keeping investors at bay, and even worse, Africans being "primitive" was the same narrative used during colonialism and slavery to justify the exploitation of Africans....

I suggest that you should have a look at "WODE MAYA"'s channel on youtube to see a different side of Sub Saharan Africa that should be promoted in the media more often, while I'm not saying other issues shouldn't be spoken about, the media needs to give balanced information regarding Africa and not just the same old clichés because it is becoming very misleading ...

There are so many great things happening in Africa in the 21st century Al Jazeera, why not focus on them? This old world version of Africa you are fixated on to show to the world betrays your calculated strategy to paint a backward picture of Africa to the world. Each culture has its relics of the past, but the idea of the information age is to propel societies into the dynamic future that lies before us; come on Al Jazeera, do your part and let Africans share this version of their culture.

I liked it. It portrays Afrika's true cultures. I think that you are too used to European cultures and system that is why you are calling this a backward picture of Afrika, which is sad. This is how Afrika is and the people in the documentary are proud and they do not want their traditions to die away.

@@maweeja Everybody has a culture, it is noting to make us feel more or less special about. Our real legacy is our Humanity, which makes us equal to everyone else and worthy of all that has been bestowed upon Man. Africans must continue to remember the white man has not yet learned to see us as equal, due to his own inherent insecurities. Africa has everything, including 1.4 billion strong black people, capable of telling our own stories completely. let Us tell those stories as we march confidently into the 21st century and own it. This is the most embarrassing comment ever. Obviously most people know that Africa is a mixture of both modern and ancient cultures why would we want to continuously focus on the same modernity that we all experience around the world? it’s more refreshing to see so much true cultural identity rather than something that was manufactured for them due to Colonization.

I guess you must be scientist then. My guest, There is zero probabilty that you are a scientist LOL LOL You only watch scientist on TV, just like everybody else LOL LOL I guest you will not be the one to intruduce science to Africa, Because you are useless for your information, before the Africans met the white man and his Science, they were doing just fine. They didnt swim the ocean to go find the white man and his science to save them. Instead the white man crossed the ocean because he had heard of the great thing that Africa had to offer from the Arab merchants and slave traders. Ever since the white man landed on the African shores, he has never left. For most of humanity's existance people lived perfectly without the so called SCIENCE, and we will continue to live the way our forefathers did.
