Correction the Trop was built for baseball originally but they built it before the officially got an MLB team because there was rumblings the San Francisco Giants were going to relocate and that did not happen . They also thought the White Sox were going to relocate but that did not happen .

Adam I know you find it strange but be glad the Rays have a stadium to play at next season. They probably explored all possible options and they just ended up going with Steinbrenner Field. I think that is their best bet since it’s actually in Tampa. Also see it as a chance for the Rays to show the city of Tampa that they belong there and then I think more people will want to go to the games.

Glad I finally went down this year to to Trop in May when visiting my brother who just moved there. As a UConn fan who was 8 years old in 1999 this place held the most transformative game in the UConn Men's basketball history in my lifetime when UConn beat Duke in the Final Four (UConn was also 2-0 vs Coach K in the Final Four over his tenure at Duke). I get the little brother syndrome of St. Pete but the definition of insanity is building a new ballpark in the same location and expecting different results past the honey moon opening 3-5 years when the shiny new car smell would generate above average attendance. I hope they can build a new park in Tampa or Orlando if Stu demands more public funds and the deal is cut in St. Pete.

As a Floridan we always made fun of the Trop but it’s as iconic as the eyesore on I-4. We know where we are as soon as we see it. It is surreal seeing the stadium with a haircut so to speak.😅 If the Rays and Tropicana can get creative maybe they can create a giant LED OJ bottle to put at Steinbrenner. Could possibly rename it Steinbrenner field at Tropicana stadium for a short term fix. If the Rays make a deep post season run I wonder if MLB has them play those games down in Miami. As a baseball fan it’s a sad situation all around. I feel that if they move the team to Tampa that attendance would increase too because it’s the only Tampa pro team not truly located in Tampa.

In Las Vegas,Nc the old Tropicana Hotel/casino has been demolished. I makes me wonder with these turn of events for the Trop along with the lack-luster attendance for the Rays over the years, has it given both the city and the owners the chance to pause and really think it is even wise to keep them in the area and spend 100’s of millions on a new stadium. The hurricane has basically given both sides an “out”. I think the Rays are not long for the Tampa area and you’re going see other cites, possibly Orlando trying to lure them away.

This really is depressing seeing Tropicana Field like that. I don’t care what people say when they mock or made fun of the Rays Stadium for years because we had baseball & our team here in Tampa/ St. Pete Florida…….. this was OUR Rays Stadium….. our Home Field! It might of not been as nice or have the history as other MLB stadiums but it was our home! To see our team’s home field trashed like that is so sad because as a fan, I’ve been going to games there since their 1st season in 1998. Even though the Rays are playing in Tampa at Steinbrenner Field next season, it won’t be the same because they won’t be playing in THEIR OWN stadium. Even though the Rays didn’t sell out a majority of their games, there are plenty of fans that showed up to many games each year at different times to support this team. These fans deserve better & the one saving grace we have here in Tampa Bay is to one day soon have a nice brand new Home Stadium with our team hopefully finally winning a World Series! RaysUp!

They had made plans to build a new stadium but the team would obviously continue to play at the Trop until it was completed. So they were carrying insurance on the Trop for issues like Hurricanes and other natural disasters. What happens to the insurance claim now if they just decide not to repair the damage. I am assuming there will be some sort of settlement with the insurance company that will provide the Rays organization with some sort of payout to cover losses incurred.
@justinsage524618 күн бұрын
The city and the county approved bonds for $600+ million dollars of the cost for the new stadium. Stu wants more money from the city and the county to cover cost overruns. The county and city’s original agreement with Stu was that the Rays would cover cost overruns. The look is that Stu wants the city and county to cover full cost and that they pocket the money. It’s also a land ploy. If the county and city didn’t approve the bonds then Stu gets developmental rights of the land. If Stu backs out from the deal it reverts back to the city/county. Also Tropicana Field is a multipurpose stadium that was originally built to persuade the Giants or the White Sox to move prior to them getting a new park. So it was originally designed for baseball and was similarly constructed as the Metrodome in Minneapolis. Another thing is the city approved funds post hurricane to somewhat clean up, and install a draining system for the stadium to prevent further destruction of the stadium.
