As of today, Rafel Nadal, one of the greatest in the history of all sports, is ranked 158th. Federer was 97th at his retirement. Time happens to everyone and everything. I'm not sure why people are so surprised. Most people would be blessed to have Thiem's career. Worth millions, retired at 30.

Dominic Thiem's 2020 US Open final against Zverev was epic for many reasons. In a way, it was an epic failure. It happened during Covid. No fans in the bleachers. The court felt empty and oppressive. The night was unbearably heavy with heat and humidity. I've never seen anything like it. Both of these players were swimming in their own sweat. Just imagine, two of the best players in the world playing in a Major final, so exhausted, they both started serving underhand. The 7-6 fifth set was no longer about talent or guts or will to win. They both gave up and what a site to behold it was. I was aghast. Thiem's win was simply the result of a role of the dice. I encourage everyone to watch the 2020 US Open. It's the worst and the most amazing tennis final I've ever seen. It's a tennis match I will never forget. I bow to both Thiem and Zverev. They were warriors.

I also thought he'd be one of the successors of the 'big 3', but such is life. When you're standing 10-15 feet behind the baseline to hit a one-handed backhand, it eventually catches up with you. That takes too much energy and puts too much stress on your body, especially your shoulders. Thiem simply wore out. He's still young, so he will definitley find something useful to do with his life.

I hate the title of this piece on Dominic Thiem. it has been unlucky, but there are plenty of athletes who have suffered similar health related problems that have ended their career. I think he had a gorgeous career and it just didn’t last as long as he or we would’ve liked..

Good video, bud! I think there's a few contributing factors for why Dominic Thiem fell off the map, so to speak. He won his first grand slam during the height of the pandemic, which was a really AWFUL time to be a professional tennis player. The world of pro tennis was kind of a mess from early 2020=22 and it wound up derailing quite a few players. Just look at Jeremy Chardy for instance.

Not at all comparable. Federer and Nadal were both still at the pinnacle well beyond their prime years. Thiem lost his prime years. The better comparison would be Murray who broke down in 2017 after pushing himself to become #1 in 2016. He lost his best years and probably would’ve won another few majors if he’d stayed healthy in 2017/18/19.

And many would kill to be in his shoes at his worst, making $750K in one year on the tour. However, definitely not the same when you have top #3 talent. Hoping for him to recover. Some thing he damaged his wrist from smashing his racquet on one or more occasions. He also rips the ball.

It's more the technique he used that damaged his wrist over time. He generated a lot of power from his wrist which paid off but at a great cost to his longevity in the sport.

The mechanics of the game ended Thiem's career. Most players hit the ball really hard from 3 feet behind the baseline with a massive racquet and extreme grip. The wrist is not designed for such mechanics. 27 tournaments playing this way will not result in a long career.

Dominic Thiem: the most selfish top 5 in the history of ATP. Thiem was born near Vienna, and lives in Vienna, the city which once again has been voted as having the highest quality of life in the world by United Nations, The Economist and Mercer surveys. Thiem earned 30 million dollars of prize money, solely from tennis tournaments (not including sponsors money). That's 12th ranked of all-time tennis earnings. In April 2020, Djokovic created a fund to help 200 or less ranked tennis players survive the period of no tennis tournaments due to Covid. Top 5 ATP players were supposed to donate 10.000 dollars to the fund. They all gave (Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, Medvedev), except world number 3 - Dominic Thiem. When asked why he didn't donate a cent to the fund he replied to an Austrian newspaper Krone: "They (less ranked than 200) won't starve. There is no guarantee of success in life (including being a tennis player)". Thiem's career went down the drain since that event. Karma.

Good talent but was a one hit wonder. I like his ground game and his backhand was the best I've seen since Ivan Lendel. He's a clone of a guy named Alex Corajita from the mid/late 90s who took Sampras and Agassi to the limit but always coming up short. He may have won a couple more majors if he stayed healthy. Overall, I enjoyed his aggressive game.

Dominic was never particularly disciplined when it came to his training. When he had fallen madly in love with his new girlfriend Lili, he began to lose his focus. He couldn't manage to reconcile his lifestyle with his training. Those around him know that the problems with his wrist were more a result of his shifting priorities.
