The SAD Reality of the New AMEX Gold Card

Yeah it's the highest earning mainstream card that I'm aware of. I just wish the annual fee wasn't so high

You only need to spend about $1250 a month on the 4x categories to actually earn a decent amount of points every year. 1250 x 4 X 12 = 60,000 points or $600 to $1200 in value. Add the credits, if you can use them, and it totally makes sense. Speaking of credits, the twice a year $100 in total Resy credit and the Dunkin' credit where you order a $4 iced coffee every month for free and get $7 in statement credit which makes you $3 or $36 per year are the best deals.

Yeah if you're committed to using this card for all of your food purchases and you don't want to chase a ton of welcome offers, it can be a great card

@@JacobsPointsAndProfit I actually made a mistake about the Dunkin credit, you don't get $7 with any purchase you get up to $7, so if you just buy an iced coffee for $4 you only get $4 which makes this worthless since I almost never go to Dunkin Donuts. I spend a lot on dining and groceries but I can't justify paying this new annual fee. Going to ask for a retention offer and if I like the offer I might keep it one more year, otherwise I'm cancelling.

Unless the gold card has a welcome offer of 90k all the time it’s not worth it Cost almost as much as the venture X but a mid welcome offer without background work

Yeah I was thinking about how the Venture X barely costs more than the Gold. Maybe the Gold should be giving some sort of lounge access haha

The only reason I keeping this card is for the credits & my annual fee post before October 1 so i will be getting this card at $250

Mine renews in March 14. I used the Uber Eats and GrubHub credits. The only new credit I find useful is the Dunkin credit and my effective fee providing I use all the credits is $1 a year.

Yeah this card at $250 is a lot easier to keep than at $325. I wouldn't blame anyone for renewing another year

Do a breakeven analysis vs the savor one which gets 3x at dining and grocery with no annual fee. I am also in the same boat for the family rules, because I hopped on the platinum 150k offer.

Great video. The only thing good to come out of the changes was the White Gold color LOL. The Dunkin' one breaks my heart because I don't go there at all. I was able to change my Business Gold card to a Business White Gold this morning, so now I won't have to feel FOMO about the new color bc I was not going to get the personal Gold just for the color LOL🤣. I might have to switch my wife's Business Rose Gold card to the Business White Gold. It's a good collectors item but definitely not worth applying for a new card just for the design

@@JacobsPointsAndProfit do it! In my experience, I ordered a replacement Business Rose Gold the day it became available, but never activated the physical card. My Amex app icon and my Apple Pay image updated to the rose gold, but physically kept using the Business Gold card - I felt like I had best of both worlds that way, but I’m gonna activate this one for sure. I requested the change this morning, and the app and digital wallet icons already updated and my card should arrive soon - hurry and do it before they’re gone!

Hey Jacob, i did something kind of dumb. I applied for the card just to see if i would get approved and i did. I did my research and debated for so long before accepting and i ended up accepting the card. Now thinking i dont think i shouldve i kind of regret it. What would be the repercussions of me cancelling the card the same day i got it? It was a dumb decision to apply for it in the first place so please if you have some advice i would greatly appreciate it. I know it was dumb 😭

Sorry about that situation! My recommendation is that you should not cancel the card the same day you got it. That could put you on Amex's bad side and could prevent from getting approved for other cards in the future. At this points, I'd say go for the welcome offer to get your huge amount of points and try to use the credits the best you can and then cancel after 1 full year of holding the card if you don't think the card is for you

I did get a huge 90k offer for 6k in 6months which i can do pretty easily it was just the peer pressure that got me to accept it, but besides that ill try and make the most of it and probably get a nice vacation out of it.
