The boy who killed his stepfather is an example of why we really need to change this shit. You can tell he isn't a cold killer. You can hear remorse, you can hear fear in his voice, because he's just a kid! We have no idea what his life was like at home, but from experience, to even think about killing a stepfather, something had to have already been horribly wrong in that house. Who knows if he didn't do it in self defense, or maybe defending his mom, which I've definitely heard countless stories from many people about who've had go fight off stepfathers for their mom. Hell, there was a point where I thought I was going to have to do something to somebody I didn't want to do because of my mother. This kid needs to be saved from a hard life of this. All they're doing to him is perpetuating him to lead a path of destruction, and you know what, they're making him that way and don't give a flying fuck. That's the worst part, the fact they don't even care.

Thank you for putting this out - not only for those who need encouragement to stay out of trouble, but also for those (including myself) who need to understand not every kid locked up in prison is a terrible person. I agree with you that we need to do better as a society to address the root problems to keep these kids out of prison in the first place. Keep up the great videos, I’ve been learning a lot from them.
@erik7647
@erik7647 Жыл бұрын
I used to work in a youth shelter and a lot of the people staying there were on parole. The reality is none of these kids were old enough to have become bad people yet. They needed help and support to learn how to make better choices. Some had done some pretty serious things but it was a matter of survival or not understanding how to do better. If you don't give youth supports they do bad things to cope. They all cared, they all wanted to be good people and most of them ended up thriving with the right support. Kids don't just get into crime if something isn't wrong, their minds are still fragile and they can learn to do better. Some of the most brilliant kids I met were staying there and I am so thankful I got to learn so much from them while I helped them learn better skills. I look at these kids and I see curious, intelligent kids that care about those around them. I see the kids I used to care for and it fucking breaks me to know they didn't get better support to learn. These are not monsters that need to be warehoused away it's just suffering kids that need help.
@erik7647

Thank you for looking more into these things. I think if more people were open minded about these things we would live in a very different world. We need to stop looking at troubled teenagers as "bad kids" and more as a sign something isn't right in their lives to support them better. It really gives me hope seeing comments like this if people changing their mindset, it's the best hope we have for more people to push for a better future for our children 🖤

THESE KIDS HAD SHITTY PARENTS AND THEY ARE NOW SHITTY. THE PATTERN GOES ON AND ON. IF YOU CANT TAKE CARE OF YOUR CHILDREN AND LOVE THEM AND GIVE THEM A HEALTHY LIFE SO THEY CAN BE GOOD ADULTS, ITS TIME TO STERILIZE. STUPID PEOPLE ALWAYS HAVE THE MOST KIDS. THESE BRATS ARE JUST YOUNG PIECES OF SHIT. AND WHEN THEY REACH THAT ARBITRARY AGE OF ADULTHOOD THEY SUDDENLY LOSE THAT CHILD STATUS THOUGH NOTHING CHANGED. AGE DOESNT MAKE A PERSON GOOD OR BAD OR INNOCENT OR EVIL. SOME OF THE WORST MORE VILE CRIMINALS ARE YOUNG KIDS. THEY ENJOYED THOROUGHLY WHAT THEY DID. IF A CHILD IS INNOCENT, THEY DONT KILL AND RAPE. IF AN ADULT IS GOOD AND KIND THEY DONT EITHER. PEOPLE OF ALL AGES CAN BE GOOD OR BAD. IF A RETARDED PERSON HACKS UP A FAMILY SHOULD THEY BE FREED. NO. THEY FORFEITED THEIR RIGHT TO BE FREE BC THEY TOOK SOMEONES LIFE AND VIOLATED RIGHTS. ONCE YOU TAKE WHAT IS SOMEONE ELSES RIGHT TO BE ALIVE AND FREE, YOU LOSE. A SECOND CHANCE FOR WHAT. WHY? DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY SCUMBAGS HAVE BEEN LET OUT AND REOFFENDED.

Larry, I truly thank you for this video. It shows the sad reality of prison, and law enforcement in the states. You cant help but feel bad for these children and teens. They are still developing, they are still learning right from wrong. They are still learning how to understand their emotions and how to react to them properly. When you put children like that in prison, how are they supposed to learn those things properly? They are stuck around other kids who are in the same situation. They dont have an adult besides the correction officers around for them then. And ones that might have adult prisoners near them, may not get a good example to learn from. Adults are suppose to teach these kids things. How as a judge or an officer can you look at a child and not want to give them a second chance? How can someone not want to give them that chance to learn right from wrong? Plus the mention of suicide. Teens and children doing so is sad, so f-ing sad. You know they felt like everyone gave up on them once they got there. Id imagine theres a lot of people and children that would feel that way if not given a chance. How can these judges and officers live with these deaths on their hands? I wouldnt be able to.

This is honestly something I don’t truly know how to feel about. I know a child’s brain is still developing and there’s always the chance to rehabilitate and get them back on the right path, but I’ve also seen some that already know how manipulate the people around them to get what they want. So it’s like, how do we tell the one who are honest from those really are a danger to society or eventually will be? And if we go either too tough or too soft, someone ends up getting hurt. No easy answers here…
@Checkers1993ify
@Checkers1993ify Жыл бұрын
I get where you're coming from and there's definitely no easy answers in a lot of cases, but there's a good reason why a lot of countries will have maximum sentences for juvenile offenders, won't allow the media to publish an alleged offender's name except under fairly specific circumstances, and will occasionally provide new identities to the juvenile offender after they've served their sentence. It's because there's a lot of fairly infamous cases like Jasmine Richardson in Canada and Mary Bell in the UK where the juvenile offender, after being released, goes on to apparently not commit any other crimes. Because of that, I tend to think it's much, much better to lean towards short sentences when it comes to young offenders. Because of their ages, even a relatively short sentence can seem like a long time and kids grow up fast sometimes, especially in hard conditions.

I spent quite a bit of time in juvenile as a teen. One of the saddest things I've ever seen in my life was an 11 year old kid who was clearly mentally ill who came in on a weekend stay. 6 months later he was still at the facility, getting beat by teens and staff almost daily and acting out in every single way you can imagine. He spent most of his time locked in his cell screaming or crying while banging his head on the door and got in trouble every time he was let out almost immediately. I was only 14 and even I knew he belonged in a mental hospital. I still think about him over 15 years later and hope he's doing alright. I thanked God when I saw that facility got sued and shut down! The staff in those places were almost all the most untrained, uneducated, immature people I've ever seen in my life. They had zero de-escalation skills and at the drop of a hat would resort to violence! When I went to county jail, it was like a vacation by comparison and county jail sucks so that says a lot for how bad those juvenile detention centers really are...

Colt Lundy was released in 2019 to "home detention" and after he serves that out he will be on probation. So he's completely out of prison. The sentencing he and his co-defendant received caused such an uproar that a new law called "Paul's Law" (named after Lundy's co-defendant) was passed in Indiana. The law allows for flexibility and compassion when it comes to sentencing juvenile offenders.

Honestly, here in Australia, we need this. We need SERIOUS penalties for young people committing crimes. You think it's so terrible that these kids are in prison for committing serious offences, but our kids don't get real time. They go to Juvi for a while, get worse, realise there's no repercussions for them (even for murder), get out, commit more crimes with no punishment, and then their records are sealed when they turn 18. We have 13 year olds forming gangs and doing serious shit because they KNOW there's absolutely nothing the police or society can do about it. Just a few months back, we had news about a teenage kid killing a dude talking to his girlfriend or some such. He used a gun. We don't even have legal guns in Australia, and this teenage kid managed to get one and kill a dude. And he'll be out on the streets with a crystal clear record by 18. Not even two weeks ago, we had a high speed joy ride police chase in a stolen Holden commodore (that's a rebranded Chevy v8). Dumb bitch driving wrapped it round a tree. Killed some of her mates, the others in ICU. If she survives, she will have a clear record, after killing her friends and endangering the public. In Melbourne, we have african black gangs going around raping women and robbing men. Repercussions? None. IN FACT, it's racist to talk about it, because they're black. We, as a society, are paying the price for not teaching our kid's that actions have consequences, because there are none even when there should be.

Mexican here, I feel you man. I don't think I need to tell you we have a problem with cartels here. Well, a problem is an understatement. They're reaching more and more towards stupid, impressionable children, promising they can do whatever they want, not take orders from anyone but the cartel boss, make a lot of money, live the easy life. Those children are around 12. Why they target them? Because they know even if they get caught, they will at most be given 3 years and guess what? They will go out that facility and go back to crime right away! For all of its flaws, I think the US correctional system allowing the trial of children as adults in particularly heinous crimes, is a big plus. There was this girl who was lured into the woods by her classmates in order to steal her iPod to sell for pocket money. They ended up murdering her. Two 15yos were judged as adults and given the appropiate penalty. And imo, that was the correct thing to do. If you're old enough to murder someone to steal from them, you're old enough to do the time that entails. Either you're a child, or you're not.

I know how much you care for others, but don’t make the mistake I have by ignoring yourself. I’ll keep you in my prayers buddy. No judgement here whatsoever.

>This kid knows how to make weapons Well, he was a murderer. Kids in prison is sad, but justice should not care about age. Lots of people are in terrible and abusive situations, but how you deal with that is down to you and you alone.

I had to do research about this case awhile back, the two younger boys (Paul and Colt) are out of prison now! Paul is free but on probation for a few more years and Colt got his sentence modified a few years ago and is served the rest on house arrest essentially, also on probation now!

Listen to me, I was locked up starting at 12 years old for criminal damage to property until the age of about 16. I was actually a pretty good kid before that happened...let me tell you how much it damages a child to be locked up like that during a developmentally important period. I was thrown into an environment where violence was what became the norm and the size difference between you, and the older kids meant you were always at a disadvantage so you had to become an absolute savage with the tools at your disposal to gain the upper hand. It also made me become an actual criminal on the inside by various hustles. By the time I got out, I had no idea how to properly act in society and was a menace at school to the point I got kicked out...I never did end up graduating or receiving my GED. I'm now 43 and still a complete mess but held together by the pure purpose that is my Children...they saved me, and only them. If it weren't for them I'd be dead, or in orison and thats a fact. The juvenile justice system is repugnant and needs to be thoroughly reformed. You aren't rehabilitating these little ones...you are turning them into absolute fucking monsters.

If the kid was sexually abused by his step father and that is the reason he killed him. That's nothing to be ashamed of, you weren't weak, you stood up for yourself. As much as it's an awful crime and no kid should have to do it. But no parent should ever harm their child. No victim should be ashamed of any kind of abuse

Being a mom to 5kiddos my heart hurts for these kids yet society is so sick of young children committing serious, heinous crimes against humanity that’s why children are being charged and convicted as adults, sad but it’s true… what do we do with kids committing murder, rape and home invasions, I don’t want them living next door to me , having access to my children 😥🤷🏼‍♀️

Did a lot of time in Illinois JDOC, Madison, Danville, Bloomington. I’m 25 now haven’t been in trouble in 3 years and just finished off probation. Being locked up so much in those 18/6 cells (18 hours in 6 out), it’s intense and breaks you, you don’t have a set phone call, extra food none of that. They food you good because your a minor and need more calories but you can’t save anything it’s literally straight to the garbage and you can’t share. Danville was the hardest, you couldn’t talk ever. Ever. You walk in a line with your hands behind your back and only game you play is knock out in basket ball, no noises.

tbh living near pendleton(about 10 minuets away) it’s really sad seeing kids i grew up with end up in either the juvenile or the adult prison(which is maximum security) even one of my closest friends was in and out of juvenile until he was 18 and now he’s facing 5-10 years for armed robbery and grand theft auto as well as assault, the kid had so many chances but his family not the state helped at all, also hancock county in indiana is literally nicknamed handcuff county because of the amount of arrest per week

Larry, have you heard of the Ethan Crumbley case? Ethan a 15 year old boy shoots up a school in my home state of Michigan, kills 4 and injures several others. He's being tried as an adult, and will likely get life without parole. The surprising part is that the parents were charged with multiple counts of involuntary manalughter. This happened almost 1 year ago, and the parents have been sitting in jail since because they couldn't post bail. The parents may have been bad parents, but I don't see any direct evidence they knew their son was about to shoot up a school. Prosecutors are claiming gross negligence on the parents part because a gun was within reach of Ethan they had bought for his birthday. I think the case is a slippery slope, and could be worth posting a video on.

I've always wanted to ask this. What would be your ideal prison. If you could run a prison or design a prison. Or change the prison system. What would it look like, how would it operate? Maybe you could do a video on it sometime. Maybe you already have I'm not sure. But I'd be interested in what your perspective on what a prison would be as far as rehabilitation and dealing with repeat offenders. Love your videos I think you are incredibly smart and have very good insight and wisdom.

The problem is competing interests, part of the system wants rehabilitation, the system itself is designed to keep people in and out. A lot of laws should be removed and prison really should be a last resort. Not having people sent, learn prison life, get out and be excluded from life, reoffend, and die there. Very sad.
