Do you ever wonder what happened to Dirk Benedict? The popular star of such fan favorites as Battlestar Gallactica, Charlie's Angels, The A Team, and Sssssss seems to have disappeared from the limelight.
For Dirk, things took a turn for the worse in 1974, when at only 29, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Benedict rejected traditional treatments, choosing instead to fight cancer by moving to a secluded cottage and adopting a macrobiotic diet, consisting only of white-meat fish, whole grains, and certain vegetables. It affected his appearance drastically. When he went to visit his mother and sister during this time, both of them were scared for him because of his appearance. Dirk's efforts, however, proved successful, and after several years fighting his illness, he finally put weight back on, and he was ready to get back out there. He got a clean bill of health from his doctor, Dr. Block, and he was told he didn't have the tumor anymore.
So was it cancer that derailed his career? Possibly. There is also some speculation his career went downhill because Hollywood can't stand an original thinker. Dirk felt like Hollywood ostracized him because of his different way of thinking. Dirk even said, "To be creative is a risk, with the possibility of failure. This makes Hollywood nervous." Dirk commented that anytime he would talk about things like character, story, and originality, people wanted to throw him out of the room. Dirk even confesses that while he wanted to act, he didn't necessarily want to be a movie star.
The real reason though, might have something to do with fatherhood. As The A-Team was winding down, in 1986, Dirk Benedict met and married Toni Hudson. They had two sons together: George and Roland. Dirk is an outstanding and caring father. He describes himself as "Mr. Mom." By the time his sons were in their teens, Dirk was basically raising them as a single father following Toni and his divorce in 1995.
So while Dirk's career might not be as thriving as it once was, it might be for a few very good reasons including his health, his disdain for Hollywood's lack of originality, and his dedication to being a father.

My brother and I were able to meet Dirk at a Crypticon in 2017. Being big fans of The A-Team, we were pretty excited! And let me tell ya, Dirk Benedict did not disappoint! Very friendly, accommodating and professional... telling us stories, cracking jokes and even asking us about our lives. It made me feel bad for eventually having to leave his booth, because he seemed to enjoy speaking with us as much as we enjoyed speaking with him. But, there was a line of other fans waiting to meet him, so we moved on. Lol. We did have a few other interactions with him throughout the rest of the weekend though. Fun guy! Meeting and speaking with him was a major highlight of our weekend at Crypticon that year!! 🤘

Met Dirk back in the 70's as he was the lead in Kenley Players production of Lil Abner. My mother was an actress and worked that summer stock show. Touring the rust belt of America mainly in the Ohio area. I was 5 or 6 and remembered him always being very kind, funny, and always smiling. Just a guy in theater play really. He sang real well too. Fast forward a couple of years to the Battlestar days his popularity grew to movie star status. Even then when we met again, he was being pulled in so many different directions by fans, he remembered my sister and I and made time to talk with us privately and ask how we doing. I know he wouldn't remember this, but it made an impression early on for me that celebrities/movie stars are just people. I'll never forget the few interactions we had and still brings good thoughts to me whenever I think about them.

I grew up watching him on Battlestar Galactica & Starbuck was my favorite character. He was great on The A-Team, but for me … he will always be THE Starbuck. Traits that seem to be quickly fleeting in this day & age.

Both of his books are excellent, but very deep emotionally. Worth reading if you want to understand more. Another very personal account from a TV Actor about overcoming health issues is by Keven Sorbo and his Wife Sam. I can't recall the title. I have a lot of respect for both of these actors after reading their books. And a lot of respect for Keven Sorbo's Wife, Smantha for not bailing in him like Dirk Benedick's wife supposedly did (It's in the book). In both cases there is much more to Mr. Pretty Boy than the Face. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

He is the coolest actor on tv 📺. Hollywood wish he had more faith in the process of being a actor, walking a straight line, but he’s a free spirited man that scared Hollywood due to his views, ideas of being a actor and not be typecast. Glad he well, loves his family, takes care of himself in a healthy way and he is in a good place in his life and he is at peace. He reminds me of Dean Martin in his famous roles of being a ladies man. Good video!

This has to be one of my favorite rabbit holes I went down! I was looking up info about The A-Team because someone unknowingly quoted, "I love it when a plan comes together." 😂 Dirk Benedict was my childhood crush from Battlestar Galactica to The A-Team. When other middle school kids were going on about Leif Garrett or Scott Baio, I only had eyes for Dirk! I didn't think I would still be crushing on him at 55, but hearing how he's lived his life post acting, I think he is so admirable! He has some really great priorities, and any guy who loves his kids, raises them well, and loves to cook is A+ in my opinion!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Sounds like a good human being that really made not only the right decision but difficult ones too. If you read this Dirk, you will always make me smile!❤

I recently watched Battlestar Galactica for the first time; many years late, but better than never. I was impressed with Dirk Benedict's acting and found myself liking him the more I watched. I researched him as an actor after that, looking for more performances by him. This took me to A-team. Once again, he entertained me enormously. I enjoyed both shows. A-team has more seasons, so I am hooked on that quite a bit. It is entertaining, funny, clever in many instances, and just fun. I do tend to watch the show over and over which then changes the dynamic a bit. What I mean is, some aspects can become annoying (or people - Mr. T's role), but all in all, I like it. I really like Dirk Benedict's acting!

Loved him in BG. He was the 'Han Solo' of the show, a smart-ass bad boy risk-taker who, despite his self-interest, is really not a bad boy at heart. And Dirk was right - changing him to a female character in the new BG series was a mistake, if only because that dynamic between him and Apollo and his various conquests (love triangle) was lost - and to no good purpose. Another character, a rival even, would have been a better choice, IMHO. That's not to say I didn't like the 'new' Starbuck character, it just seems like there was no damned good reason to do it.

I was a huge fan of the original series Battlestar Galactica in the late 70s and Dirk Benedict was by far and away my favorite character. Later, I was very happy to see him take over the role of Templeton Peck after the pilot of the series. Of course, he was amazing and all of his bit rolls that he played on Charlie's angels, Baywatch and many others. Although, I think far too much was made out of him not approving of a woman taking over the role of Starbuck in the reboot of Battlestar Galactica in the early 2000s. In fact, there was kind of a informal ceremony between him and Katie sackhoff where he presented her with an official Starbuck cigar. They probably should have played the clip and talked about that in the video. Dirk Benedict is a great character actor and I always found him to be a total gentleman.

What made me laugh about changing male characters to female characters in the new Galactica was that the female characters were basically men in women's bodies.

@@Tony-1971 all I really took from that was a lot of political correctness. Lol. In addition, that fight ended with them hugging and kissing at the end. Moreover, it is also what started the affair between Kara and lee. It was always hard for me to see that character in a seriously masculine way. Frankly, her character pretty much slept with every male star in the cast. Lmao. That's not exactly the most masculine thing to do.

@@Tony-1971 there was another thing I wanted to mention. The character Starbuck AKA Cara was in a constant love triangle between herself, Sam and lee. It was very tumultuous, painful and outright gut-wrenching. Only a woman can cause that many problems. Lmao.

In 1980, Benedict also starred alongside Tania Tucker in an action-comedy moonshine running car chase movie called Ruckus and he also starred in 1981 alongside Linda Blair in the action-drama thriller Ruckus, based on the 1972 novel entitled First Blood.

Still love Dirk Benedict. Still watch reruns of the original Battlestar Galactica. I can not find any reruns of The A-Team. I had the pleasure of meeting him in person in Baltimore in 1984. He signed some books for me and took the time to talk to me then kissed me on the cheek I don’t really remember much else.

To me, Dirk was the main reason I watched Battlestar Galactica. He took on the “Faceman” role on the A-Team although he wasn’t in the TV movie that launched the series. I’m glad that he was able to set his priorities straight and he understood that his kids came first. Rick Moranis had a similar turn when he shunned Hollywood. I hope he continues being a progressive thinker even if I would love to see him on the big screen again.

I got to see him onstage in Columbus, OH in the show "Oklahoma!", and was blown away. I was already a fan from BG, even had a set of little license plates you could get from ceral boxes made with "Starbuck" on them. LOL. I wrote to him about a fall he did onstage during "Oklahoma!", wondering if it was a real accident or planned, and sent along a box of cigars to get his attention. He wrote back a thank you for the cigars but didn't answer my question about the fall. His last comment tho, I've tried to follow to the best of my ability. "Don't, for Adama's sake, stay out of trouble!" LMAO I've been causing trouble ever since!

I remember really well when “Battlestar Galactica” was going to premiere in the fall of 1978. ABC was hyping the show all summer. They even went so far as to release the pilot in nationwide theaters that summer. It was a limited release to get kids interested in the show. I thought it was well done (for television), and couldn’t wait until it was introduced that autumn. His character was supposed to be somewhat of a Han Solo type. He was very easy on the eyes, and very handsome. I never knew about all his health problems. I hope his life is better, he was a great actor.
