Louisville has not had an optimal start to the college basketball season. The Cardinals are 0-8 and have yet to give first year head coach Kenny Payne a win to his name, and hope is at an all time low for this once proud program. In today's video I take a look at why Louisville is struggling so much under Payne, and determine if this situation is at all salvageable.

Die hard Card fan here. I’d say KP inherited a mess. I think the majority of our fans will cut him a wide swath of road this year. Next year the stakes for him and his staff will dramatically increase and the proof will be in the pudding. I knew that when he missed out on the portal players he wanted that this year was going to be a rocky road . It certainly has been worse than imagined but as the poet wrote Hope springs eternal in the human breast. So this fan remains hopeful though certainly concerned. I do believe that next year will be dramatically better 🤞🤞🤞

This is where i stand with it. Not saying that he should not take any blame, but he inherited a team that was already bad last year and that was before they lost most of their talent. I think it was more of a struggle for him to get any good new players since the rumor was that the ncaa decision was coming up this year which meant we might have been held from tourny play. Not to mention the fact that it was an all new coaching staff. Now that the ncaa stuff is behind us and the coaching staff has at least got their footing a little bit i want to wait and see what kenny can do during the off season and next year. If it looks this bad throughout next season then yeah, it might be time to start thinking about moving on from him.

As a Louisville resident I’ve noticed most of the locals are very hesitant to criticize Coach Payne. "Some" would use the race card for your negative comments but to be honest, it’s hard to be critical of a super nice guy and just a great all around person. I’m hoping they give him at least 3 years to get some of "his guys" on the roster. Cardinal fans expect wins, conference championships, elite 8, final 4 etc …..BUT this year they may have to ride the wave……AND perhaps a win over Kentucky might ease their "pain" (no pun intended)

I see where people are saying Kenny is not at fault, really? Look what Jeff Brohm has done his 1st year with the football team. He brought in great players. Good coaches bring in great players. Kenny is at UofL, there is no reason he shouldn't be able to recruit great players. My guess is players don't see him as a great coach. Why should they, he has never been a head coach.

? Football team wasn't under investigation. Brohm inherited a decent football team. Still lost to a below average Kentucky team for the fifth year in a row. In addition, although Louisville didn't make the ACC conference schedule, it was extremely favorable schedule was in the middle 40s, nothing to brag about. Really don't dislike Brohm, but the Big 10 division is horrible. Purdue won the ridiculous division of the Big 10 last year as did Iowa this year. But to make it out to be Brohm is top of the food chain is false.

I didn’t expect a season that would make Kentucky’s 2020-2021 9-16 record look good though.Don’t buy recruits with hookers and you won’t have this issue lol. 4-26 though… It wouldn’t shock me if next year is Payne’s make it or break it year. I don’t think he will have the cushion to be below .500 next year. He needs to show results right away, at least have 16 wins and make the NIT worst case. Making the NIT would be a big achievement for this team after this year. I would be absolutely shocked if they turned it around enough to make the NCAA tournament.

Kenny Payne is not at fault here... and not because he is a novice as it pertains to Head Coaching experience.. which he is... and he is doing what he knows and believes in. The fault belongs squarely on the AD office. They knew KP had no experience as a head coach and even knowing that they hired him hoping somehow that his previous assistant coaching roles would somehow and by some sort of miracle translate fine at this level. Also, I imagine they thought recruits would just line up for him as they did for Kentucky. The problem here is that Louisville is not Kentucky, nor Duke, nor North Carolina nor Kansas. Kenny Payne MIGHT be a good coach with several years of trials and errors.. but those lessons should be learned at a low or mid level school not at a Top 10 to 15 basketball program. My guess is that there was lots of pressure from "some" alumni and donors that forced that hire. I would love to know the real story behind this hiring.
@BobbyDouglasBasketball

Makes sense. I feel like most of the Louisville fan base was for the Payne hiring if I remember correctly. I'd argue the opposite: I think he is the placeholder until the stench of the Adidas scandal and the Chris Mack era is gone and then the program will move on to someone else. Yes, their history is impressive but they haven't been good the last few years and a mid-season coaching move means there's no roster continuity for KP to work with. I can't think of a P5 team with a worse collection of guards than Louisville right now. He's going to need 3-4 seasons to right the ship but I think they'll just dump him once the program is off probation.

KP is at fault. Him and his whole coaching staff. There is a difference between losing and competing. UofL is losing at an embarrassing level. Also, the team looks lost and confused on defense and offense. It is 100% on coaching to not be competitive or competent. As a UofL fan myself, I didn't expect crazy performance. However, you have to at least compete. UofL is not competing.

This is coming from a diehard cardinal fan. The problem with Payne has started from when he took the job imo. He didn't have any urgency to hire a full staff, this took a few months (he even stayed in New York two weeks after his opening PC). He did whiff on some transfers, fine, in recruiting that happens as you hit some and miss some. But the only true transfer guard he got was a Tennessee State walk on... Just watching this team there is nothing inspiring about them. Did the previous staff leave him a fantastic roster? Not really no, but this teams plays with no heart and doesn't seem like they care that they are playing at all. Ellis is being forced as a SG to play Point, but when he's out there with another guard he struggles still. Turning the ball over nearly 5 times a game is outrageous. I can deal with the thought of this team was bad and have no talent so it's not his fault. But at least get these guys to play hard or resemble any kind of offense with set plays, dumb it down to high school style or something, ANYTHING. He needs to inspire some kind of hope that he does know what he is doing or with future talent. The fans will probably run him out of town at this rate. He seems like such a nice and humble guy.. I hate this but I do think he made some early mistakes and is reaping them now.

Speaking of El Ellis you say "He is the only player on this roster that remotely resembles a point guard." That has to be an exaggeration unless you have overlooked Fabio Basili. Fabio is clearly not ready for this high level of D-1 competition having reclassified to play earlier, but to say he doesn't remotely resemble a point guard is more than a little off. When he is at his best he looks like much more of a point guard than El Ellis will ever be. Fabio needs a lot of time and I'm glad to see he is starting to get that because as everybody knows you can't improve unless you can get on the floor. He had some off the court issues of being late that caused him to miss playing time early. Hopefully he has seen the error of his ways as he actually got in during the first half recently. The more he improves the more El can play off the ball and the better the Cards' chances are of getting a win.

Kenny Payne is a good coach , but not on the level like pitino or denny Crum, it's only going to get worse, because their not going to get the top recruits because they don't have a top 3 coach. The old louisville days are done and may never come back unless you get a pitino or Crum

Yeah. You'd think a program like Louisville would be able to withstand a few down years, but this is pushing it.

People get so caught up in the moment. They will get good recruits again soon enough. And I don't care if they aren't the top recruits. I'll take 3-4 star guys who stay 3-4 years. That's how it was with Pitino teams, and I'd say they were pretty good. Don't need the 5 stars to win... it's not like these 5 star schools are winning titles, it's still always veteran, experienced teams. Pretty tough to recruit good talent when you have NCAA clouds over you for half a decade. These players were fed lies from the media thinking a hammer would be dropped on Louisville or something and were afraid. But it's clear skies now.

If you look at any of the lists of top bball programs historically we are almost always 6th or 7th. Very easily top ten. Nearly top 5. I was never big on KP as a head coach here 1st. In hindsight I think many people would rethink taking auch a chance on an unproven coach given where the program was and what it was dealing with at the time
