What are your thoughts on the Nintendo Switch cartridges? Would you rather see Nintendo games on discs again?

It's not possible in handhelds. PSP tried it and it was horrendous. I think we're in the time of holographic storage, just a flat sheet of metal topped with the hologram. You heard it here first.

@@righttoexplain I remember that time. I hacked my psp just because I could load games way faster as backup on the memory stick, than as a disc. Well the memory sticks where expensive though. I spent 45€ on a 2gb memory stick for my psp slim. At that time you could already get 8gb sd cards for under 15€.

Personally I love the nostalgia that a cartridge gives. Although tedious it reminds me of the gameboy times. I prefer it over CDs because I feel it won't have the same complications(scratches when console tilts). I don't mind the high prices for the physical games as they actually have resale value unlike digital downloads.

@@felixlgq problem with digital is that sd cards are full rather quick (and switch needs sd cards), and that not everyone has ulimited bandwidt to download games and updates with. Plus i just like having a physical copy, preferably with a game that is playable even before the expected patch update. For say when i bought a game whilst traveling and don't have a steady internet connection wherever i'm staying. Cloudsaving isn't perfect either. Plus i feel some companies want to to turn digital into streaming games and that is just ridiculous. Physical gives you a greater feel of ownership. Nor is there the same level of attachment. I have mariokart64 on eshop download for wii u, but i do'nt feel any attachment towards that downloaded game. I do feel an attachment to the N64 cartridge i have for my N64.

@@koopalibrary You can get a 400 GB SD card from Amazon for less than $100. One thing that's nice about Nintendo is they do what they gotta do to keep their resale values up. I bought Zelda for about $60 new, played it for almost 300 hours and completed it, then easily resold it for $45. In hindsight, I could have bought it used and possibly made all my money back after completing it. That's a free game right there.

This video is incorrect and inaccurate in many ways. Notice that the video does not cite any sources or figures to back up its claims. Mainly that its switch cartridges cost more than alternatives. First, "Switch" carts are not Flash memory, they are mask memory. Flash memory uses substrate layers to hold static chargers to create binary data. Mask roms use special masks to build memory circuits at a very low-cost process. And yes, carts may contain "Flash", but only for auxiliary purposes (updates, fixes, user data, etc.). Second, the cost is a combination of: physical media, hardware player, and licensing. Hence, if Switch were to have a Blu-ray player, it would need to pay licensing to sony and other companies for every aspect. That along makes the cost difference negligible. And its the same reason Gamecube used a different disc system and why XBOX could not natively play DVDs.
@Themperror1
@Themperror1 6 жыл бұрын
Not only that but the speed of the cartridges is higher than what any non-expensive flash card would allow, and its more durable. It's a completely different system then simply a flash card. There's also special hardware on that to prevent modifications and every cartridge has their own decryption HW as well..

They're _not_ mask ROMs. The manufacturer doesn't make mask ROMs bigger than 128 mb. They have a technology called "XtraROM" which is probably something like a write-once PROM. The company claims a lifespan of 20 years at 85 degrees C, while mask ROMs would last essentially forever.

The uploader didn't think about the fact that the new cards are new almost solely to avoid people from making SD card rom kits like they do for the 3DS for example. Nintendo wants it to be a lot of work and inconvenient to get every game for free. That's most of the whole argument, and shorter than this lazy video. Think Nintendo Gamecube. Tiny disc, spins backwards, avoided losing a billion dollars to CD burners which killed the Sega Dreamcast.

I think they already confirmed that they are working on a 64GB card but besides that fact publishers need to use the cards available and not "cheap out", because there are 32GB cards out there and publishers often use the 16GB variant to save costs and the consumer has to download the rest. Dimitrios Zikos Not even. I think a huge reason why Nintendo’s games rarely go on sale or never receive price drops is due to the fact that Nintendo’s sole revenue source is video games. This contrasts with Sony and MS, as they are both larger companies. Also, PlayStation and Xbox has more services that people subscribe to as well. Nintendo’s online offering is pretty trash, but you can bet that they’re making an amazing profit off of an online service that should be free. Maybe they’ll have a bit more sales in the future due to charging for online now.

Which is kind of a way of making the games cheaper at the end of the day.

I doubt the high price of the Switch cartridges is due to its proprietary nature. Nintendo certainly uses standard Flash chips in their cartridges. The only proprietary thing is probably the shell. Tbh, I'm willing to pay the extra if it means physical copies are still around. There's something about obtaining a physical copy vs downloading a digital copy that makes physical copies special. Opening one up feels much nicer than just clicking an option in your menu. Not to mention, storage space isn't really much of a problem with physical copies. Physical copies probably won't be around much longer, so I'm going to enjoy them while they're still around. If you have a physical copy, you own the game. If you have a digital copy and either the company revokes for some reason or goes out of business, you leave with nothing.

What a load of b.s. - always using the “cost” excuse to justify massive profits and markup and heard this for over 25 years - like a broken record. The fact remains these proprietary cards are not much more to produce due to the sheer amount produced in Japan. All these are made in Japan and mostly automated. The more that are produced, the cheaper the cost so this further verifies that “cost” is not the factor on its own. It’s a PCB with a nand chip just like a USB drive but a custom design and shape - that’s it. Nand prices have dropped over the years due to prevalence so again this proves cost is not the main reason. I suspect pure profit is the reason for the high cost. I would love to see a cost of manufacturing breakdown just for materials and the cost breakdown as it leaves the factory and I imagine we would all be shocked at how cheap they are. As for the physical and digital being the same price, this is referred to as price fixing as the digital version would be cheaper than the physical version due to no manufacturing, distribution, shipping costs however it appears Nintendo is using this system to keep the retailers in business. To deliberately keep price parity between both options indicates a deliberate intent to defraud. This also means the incentive to buy digital plus storage costs is negated and people opt for physical as less inconvenience with micro sd storage.

Honestly, I've noticed that sales in the eShop are significantly better than physical copies when they go on sale for the most part, and not only that eShop sales happen more regularly than they do for physical games. You also get significantly more points when purchasing games through the eShop than you do with a physical copy, those points are basically Nintendo money you can use towards other digital downloads. For people like me who never sell their games, it's not a bad alternative for some games. I'll still buy physical ones as my primary choice but if it's not a game I care about a lot and the eShop sale is super good, I'll opt for the digital download.

Originally the point was so the case stood tall with other console game cases. The cases are larger to prevent theft, but a 3DS case is large enough to do that. The main point was to both differentiate portable and home console games, and create a logical consistency with other consoles. The 3DS cases are smaller so they are easier to fit into a bag to be carried with the console itself. The problem is the switch is encroaching on that portability the 3DS had, so while smaller cases would be more logical, its likely they kept the tall cases to help push 3DS as being the portable console.

as long as you don't pull the game out while you're playing or the game is active, you'll be fine. The Switch is also a little bit sturdier than it's older counterparts, the DS series (OG to 3DS), and holds the cartridge A LOT better. I don't understand the fixation on the cartridges, the only real downside to the Switch in my opinion is the problem Nintendo has been having the the joycons on both the dockable Switch and the Lite with stick drift. You only really have a few options when that happens: 1. send it in to Nintendo and be out of a Switch/joycon(s) for a while until they repair and mail back 2. purchase at GameStop and purchase the warranty and exchange for a fresh new console 3. trade in the joycons at GameStop and use the money towards a new set of joycons and purchase the warranty specifically for the joycons in case it happens to those 4. purchase the parts needed and fix/repair yourself 5. take to a console repair shop 6. (this option I recommend pairing with options 2-3) purchase a pro controller, name or off brand, and use that exclusively when at home and have your switch docked or not, those with Lites, sorry, this option may not be available for you, it's really hard finding controllers that actually work with the Lite. Basically, don't pull out the cartridge unless you've closed out the game and try to protect your joycons as much as possible.

The biggest boon for digital on Switch is for those who do speedruns: Digital loads at minimum 5 seconds faster where carts load slower. That means that if you're trying to break a WR that someone did in digital with a cart, you're likely not going to be able to unless there are more than 5 seconds that can be shaved off that time. Not a HUGE issue right now, but it basically gives free 5-10 seconds over the span of a game (more for BotW) for free simply by shorter load screens

I prefer cards/cartridges rather than discs. Way cooler, smaller, harder to break and overall more reliable. Besides, this kind of "solid" media storage brings memories of Gameboy days. All my old cartridges work like a charm, even today, after 30 years. My discs on the other hand....not so much. They're prone to self-destruct even with the utmost care. I remember how pissed off i was the day when Gamecube went out, and i've learnt that it has disc instead of cartridges. And probably, at the time (although i don't believe it) it wasn't a solution for bigger storage on that type of media. Nowadays is totally possible to place a game on cards/cartridges. That's a good thing, and kudos to Nintendo making this possible once again. And I almost forgot....the day when all the gaming industry will shift gears towards digital distribution only, is the day when they'll lose me as a customer. I refuse to support that.

Ironically, one thing I have noticed about Nintendo Switch games is that both digital and physical copies of multi-platform games on it range in price from $29 to $60+. Most multi-platform games I've seen on both the Switch and the other consoles have had the same price regardless of platform. The Crash Bandicoot Trilogy (for example) was released new on all three major platforms at the same price, $39.99.

Buying a cartridge with in a year of it's release date means you can redeem Nintendo Gold points, which is Nintendo's version of reward points. One point is worth one cent, and after a while you could rack up some serious amounts of money in Nintendo Gold points.

@lordeilluminati
@lordeilluminati 5 жыл бұрын
With required downloads like L.A. Noire, even with cartridges they will not last as a N64 cartridge, being completely reliant on the server availability which will not last forever. Nintendo games and indie titles are mostly playable right away without required downloads (because they are small), but many third party publishers opt to use a small cartridge than the game needs because is cheaper to save on the manufacturing process. Yes, the physical object will last longer, but without the data that makes the game "a game", it is just plastic.

Biggest gripe is that all these old indie games that are a few dollars on steam are around $15 on the eshop, even if they don't release on a cartridge. On top of that, the developers don't scale the text for handheld mode making them only playable on the dock.
@Zeverinsen

Nintendo could've kept the same cartridge design as the DS or 3DS, or just started using the shape of normal SD card, which would've saved *everyone* money, and it would've been convenient, but no... Nooooo, Nintendo can't do that, because they'd rather shoot *everyone* and themselves in the foot if there's a mere possibility that someone could possibly pirate a game, rather than focusing on quality and convenience. It's *easy* to download or stream music for free, but people still buy music or pay for streaming services because of quality and convenience. I pay for Spotify because it's convenient. The moment these services are no longer convenient enough, I'll stop paying for them. Nintendo is making EVERYTHING inconvenient for EVERYONE, and it's just getting worse and *worse* every year.

@Brother_Piner

If they're overpriced, why have Nintendo consoles traditionally been cheaper than the rest. Who the hell is calling the Switch's shortcomings features? I've only heard people say that the fact it's not in 4K, and doesn't have as big of a processor as its competitors is a minor setback that they can live with for what they get. Also, what they get is pretty important, considering it plays current-gen, home console games on the go. That's pretty groundbreaking, and a pretty good reason to buy a Switch. Also, most PS4 and XBOne systems don't have 4K either, so the fact that in docked mode it plays at the same resolution as the other systems, and is still in HD 720p when in portable mode is pretty good. If you don't like how much a new game costs, just wait until there are a lot of used copies floating around, it'll get cheaper. Nintendo isn't the Apple of game consoles, because they actually innovate with their products, rather than rely on name recognition alone. That's what Sony seems to be doing, honestly, and not even to the extent of Apple at all.

Nintendo has never given up on using cartridges, since they had many reasons to use them. In the old days, cartridges came with proprietary ROM chips on them which were used for copy-protection purposes, to prevent people from making bootleg reproduction cartridges and selling them, undercutting legitimate Nintendo-licensed copies of games. This hasn't stopped modern hackers from reverse engineering the chips or creating ROM dumps for emulation software, but it stopped illegal copying back in the days of the NES, SNES, Game Boy, and N64, before ROM dumping software and technology became commonplace. Nintendo had watched as Atari collapsed on itself when the Atari 2400 got swamped with horrible quality unlicensed games, which caused the infamous Crash of 1983, so they were adamant at preventing the same thing from happening to the NES in 1985 by requiring all software developers who wanted to put games on the NES to purchase and comply with the license regulations to get the ROM chips needed to develop games for the NES. This ensured consumer confidence (very important for any company whose primary products are principally intellectual like video games and movies); every game which had the Official Nintendo License could be trusted to have some baseline level of quality in software (i.e. the game on the cartridge wouldn't crash on booting up). Atari infamously reverse-engineered the NES copy-protection ROMs and created the TenGen line of NES cartridges without licensing them with the Big N. This violated the patent and copyright laws of the US and Nintendo sued Atari and won damages for selling this unlicensed line, including forcing the stoppage of manufacturing and selling more unlicensed cartridges, which eventually could have run the same risk for Nintendo that had nearly ruined Atari. Cartridges have more advantages than merely protecting consumer confidence and ensuring that Nintendo remained completely in control of which software could end up on their consoles. They load far faster than CDs since the console can treat the cartridge as basically just extended RAM, allow custom hardware to support particular games with specific needs to be packaged with the storage device the game comes on (like the SuperFX chip on a number of SNES games). Cartridge games also need to use less regular RAM as well since data can be pulled and streamed to the processor in real-time without waiting for a hard-drive or optical disk to locate it, and so on. The two biggest and obvious drawbacks to cartridges are of course their limited storage capacity and higher manufacturing price and requirements. Both of these are not as bad as they once were. Advancements thanks to SD cards, flash memory, and overall minimization of computer technology have reduced the costs and increased storage sizes of modern cartridges.

James Suter 6 minutes ago I used to like digital downloads, but recently I just opened a box containing 20+ NES games, 15 SNES games, 17 n64 games, and even 8 atari 2600 games. It was satisfying to know that I OWN these games, and I will own them for the rest of my life if I so wish. As for my Xbox One, I downloaded all my games out of laziness and convenience... eventually, Microsoft will stop servicing online downloads for the Xbox One, so if I download the games to a hard drive and the hard drive fails, then I'm screwed and I'll never have access to those games again. Cartridges are collectible and give you REAL ownership. With digital downloads, you really don't "own" anything. Hypothetically, if my Nintendo cartridges were "digital" back then, then I likely would have lost all of my content a long time ago. Cartridges also free the console from needing a huge hard drive, which is what will be needed for the size of games on Xbox Scarlett. While I do like the convenience of downloads, I think the pros for having game cartridges outweigh any of the cons.
