I don't mean to argue with you at all, quite the opposite. I switched from using gas powered lawn equipment to using a scythe to mow and trim my yard. I went from hating yard maintenance because of the declining build quality of lawn equipment, lack of replacenebt parts and the increasing use of plastic parts that crumble because of UV exposure. After getting my scythe about a month ago, my enthusiasm went from dread to anticipation of the next time I can mow in clean silence. In this case, for me, the instant gratification of my switch to scything brought me to your channel because I care again about having a healthy and vibrant lawn. ✌😁 As far as the work always continuing as opposed to have a finished car, there is a Japanese philosophy that may help you. To a Japanese gardener, the goal is to be perfectly in tune with nature to get perfect results. A lifetime of dedication is often spent in pursuit of that perfection. It is always elusive, but we do get closer with each passing season. Knowing we we never reach perfection is both OK, and not defeatist because it means there is always room for improvement. It goes further than that too. Let's say nature throws us conditions that destroys our work completely, it saddens us, but our response is what matters. If we adapt and find a way through, then we are back on the road to that perfection.

I have to constantly remind friends that ask me to help on their lawn that they need to be dedicated. There’s no renovation and then you’re done. If you truly want what I have, which took nearly 3 seasons to achieve, you need to work hard at it and keep up with it. It’s not a simple one-and-done solution. Loved this video!

You're confusing a nice lawn with the lawn care hobby. To have a nice lawn just mowing really is enough. You don't need fertilizers, nature takes care of it all. But as soon as you start using fertilizers and chemicals, you're taking over and nature doesn't work anymore. So you have to keep doing the work. En you can and enjoy doing so, but you definitely don't have to. « This is the sad truth about lawn care that you may not have realized.

I've cut commercialy for a decade. By myself to a multimillion dollar landscape companiy. Our licensed arborist was on point before we'd mow in spring and cleanup for fall. Not 1 dead blade. He knew by grass blades and knew ratios in his head. People don't understand that your lawn isnt like house plants. You have to be assertive with it! Best way to start is as you mentioned. Know your dirt! Everything depends on dirt. If you don't have good dirt, you'll have bad roots, weak roots, no nutritional value. Your vegetable scraps will work fine for a bit. Great points! Just don't give up! It's science, it's tricky. You'll all get it. Each lawn needs its own personal care. No one will ever have the same ratios ect.

I’m doing strictly organic and while it’s true my no maintenance neighbors yard bounces back when the rains come and he mows it a few times a season, there is something to be said for the enjoyment of doing the work, and the things I’ve done just since Feb are really showing. Everyone has different priorities.

Excellent Video and facts. It should be a prerequisite for anyone getting into lawn care. I'm in calendar year #2 of my renovation and still at least another season to go to get what I envisioned. I still have some bare spots to get tillered in with KBG and Creeping Fescue. Some spot spraying for various knotweed, etc.. But not only that, I have a new pup and nice burn spots to fix. Planning on making a raised bed full of KBG and using that for plugs to quickly fill in dead zones since seeding and dirt or peat takes too long or gets washed out before grass grows.

Yo Jesse, Thank you so much for this video, specifically. Especially 'Sad Fact 05'. For us Novice, first time home owners in this market, the lawns are almost ALWAYS trashed and in my case I have far less lawn than square footage of house. For the past year I've kept thinking what I'm going to realistically need to do to salvage this weed patch but before I spent one thin dime, (besides the mower of course) I started doing the research and then I found your channel. This is what I was afraid of most. 'Even If' I were to start jumping through some or most of these hoops, should my health drop even more than it has, any progress that would be seriously hard fought for to get it up to 'Normal', (which it is far from right now) everything will revert to whence it was. Now I'll be rethinking everything about this weed patch and save that 'Lawn Care' monies for that solution instead. Honesty is a rare commodity in this life but I greatly value yours, take care. ~Mark~

Yeah I wish I could give a number of what it's going to cost, but it really varies depending on city/state. My water bill could be completely different than yours. The shade will definitely help. LOL - it always seems like the dude who just does not cares, lawn looks better then yours. lol I'm not sure your grass type, but if its tall fescue/perennial rye grass mix (some cool season lawn) be sure you are cutting high, like 3 inches. Some dudes that don't care about their lawns, they also do not mow regularly, so their lawns grow tall, and they usually don't water much forcing the grass roots to search deeper for water, so in guessing, without even trying they are making for a strong lawn. But with that being said, usually when you walk up on the lawn you can see bare spots and thin grass and weeds. Frequent mowing, regular water schedules and feedings will keep a lawn think and weed free. Keep up the good work, if you haven't already done so, do a soil test. A healthy soil will produce a healthy lawn! Check out my stuff if you get the chance.

LOL - this is true... If we stop caring for the plot, it stops giving back! nature will take over again! lol

Grass specie plays a huge role in turf proliferation. Having the best type of grass in the correct area of the lawn will save lots of headaches. My lawn is mostly fine fescue, my neighbor across the street has TTTF. We both have pretty good lawns, but neither would be as nice if the grass types were switched.

P.S. I have a bit of OCD, so I don’t mean this critically-good enough that I don’t need more to tend to my lawn!

Absolutely agree on the last one! If you find yourself taking the kids to the zoo, let me now I'm a football throw away!

If I had a dollar for every time someone told me it was a marathon and not a sprint with lawncare, I'd be rich.
