The Smiths are my favorite band of all time. I thought I’d get that out of the way up front, so that we remove any bias. Ha ha. When it comes to Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce, it’s very personal for me and I'm sure it is no different for many of you. This was a band that in a little under 5 years created 4 perfect studio albums. When I say perfect, I'm not being dramatic or over the top. They are perfect albums. Their self Titled debut, Meat Is Murder, the Queen is Dead, and Strangways here we come. Flawless works. Not to mention the many singles that weren’t even on a studio album like Panic or Ask, or Shiela Take A Bow.
The band had another 3 compilation album full of these singles and B sides that are on the right sight of the argument that this band never released a mediocre album. All great with a capital G. The only comparable band that released that much phenomenal material in such a short period of time are the Beatles. It you can come up with another one that is close let’s debate it in the comments below, but I’m fairly certain i”m correct.
Here’s the thing though, the Beatles didn’t save my life. the Smiths did. And though your story is probably different, the thing we all have in common is that one band that has special place in our heart, for being the touchstone for our lives. For me the years from 12 to 18 were the most desolate, desperate, lonely and morbidly depressing of my life. The change that happen in your teen age years whether physically, emotional, or mentally are confusing, heartbreaking and depressing.
To put it plainly. Growing up sucks. For me there was one band that was always there for me during this time. It was the Smiths. It’s funny though, it seems like that for the group of outcasts I hung with and those who were in a similar crowd in high school Who I’ve talked with in my adult years had the same experiences whether you are in a small town in Idaho like me or a big city in California or a village in brazil.
New Wave music was a beacon of light, the saviors of our youth as the Wild Swans would sing in one of their songs. And even though we all appreciate the great bands of the new wave era depending on your personality you were obsessed with one band in particular and it was almost always one of the big three, the trifecta, the holy trio, The Smiths, The Cure or Depeche Mode. Ya there was always that one or two who were that way with U2 or Joy Division but most fell into that three. For me I had a friend ben who was the Cure guy, and my cousin and friend Mark was DM. I was the Smiths guy.
