I feel so sad for kids who have school as a safe place. A lot of people look forward to going home at the end of the day, but they dread it :(

as much as school killed me, it was definitely my safe space. that and competitive swimming.

It's sad how there are kids who only get to eat at school. There should be good community meals everywhere.

New York City does this thing every summer where kids can drop by any public school and get free meals, it runs every day of the summer

@@andrewft31I love that. There used to be this library near me that would give free food to kids.

Yes, there are for children whose parent or guardian cares enough to go with them. They won't serve unattended minors, that would trigger a CPS investigation.

5:48: "...and you'll see promise lost because of circumstances a kid has no control over." Pretty much says it all about these kids.

Sometimes, teachers forget that some students are fighting to survive when they're not in school, these kids just want someone to help and guide them through life, that's why sometimes kids act out, but once you show them kindness and guidance, they're the sweetest humans on earth. Also, some parents don't deserve to have children.

Two things from this, "Every child deserves a parent, not every parent deserves a child." and a lot of schools are in it for the money or keeping the peace instead of the well being of the student in question.

I worked in daycare/preschool/kindergarten a couple of years back, and received a nasty black eye from a kid (surprisingly precise and strong hit from a 6-year-old when I was least expecting it). Turned out after some talks with both him and the staff that his parents were going through a nasty divorce at the time and he had no way of getting rid of his inner anger. While I don't condone violence and I spoke to the kid about that hitting people was not okay, I sort of get what he was going through. Hope he is doing better now. (I quit that job half a year later, but not because of that incident, they didn't just have available shifts for me anymore.)

I know that kid didn't want to hurt you, he's probably seen things that children aren't supposed to see and was frustrated, I hope he's doing well

One of my best friends is a teacher. At the beginning of the school year, she always asked what the students liked best about starting a new school year. One of the students said they liked starting a new school year because they knew they’d get to eat twice a day during the school week. Several of the students agreed…it was heartbreaking 💔

Not a teacher, but earlier today I was hanging out with my friends at DQ. There was this adorable little boy in the corner, I’m not a fan of younger children, and even I thought he was just the cutest thing, but it turned out he was the son of the woman working there. He was so cheerful, he had the coolest little dance moves, and he kept offering everyone around him his snacks. I can see why a mother wouldn’t want her child interacting with strangers while she wasn’t watching, but she literally grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, and carried him across the room, practically threw him into a booth. She didn’t tell him why he shouldn’t talk to people or anything, just screamed at him in the middle of a public restaurant, with a significant amount of diners, that he needed to stay exactly where he was, but the tone of her voice was so threatening, as if she was reminding him of “what happened last time”. When she walked back behind the counter, I finally turned around to see if he was okay, and he looked like he was on the verge of tears. He just kept holding his ear, and I’m really hoping she didn’t hit him. The light that shone in his eyes only a minute earlier was completely dull, and he just stared at the ground until I left ten minutes later. Poor kid. He went from happily telling everyone about how he’s almost six years old to sitting as still as a five year old boy ca physically stay. 💔

Damn, so many sad stories, sitting here heartbroken, tears streaming down my face 🥲💔 One story that might seem trivial about the non-supportive parent during swim practice touched me though, since I’m the exact opposite with my kids(much to their chagrin and embarrassment the older they get). It got so bad with me cheering on my two youngest(especially my little one as it took her 6 semesters to learn to swim properly and make the required distance of 200m) that the swim teachers had to shush me in front of the whole class and other parents, most of them like the one in the story, completely immersed in their phones, sadly enough. I still gave them a thumbs up or two when they did really great, and nodded and winked as non verbal cues, they were not appreciated by the teachers either, but I kept doing it anyway. I have Fibromyalgia, chronic pain and double side sciatica and walk with a walker(rollator) since many years. So when my youngest girl, Saga(means Fairytale in English) had her last performance to achieve her last remaining goal (Final Swim Trophy) I couldn’t walk up and down stairs anymore… The local swimming hall didn’t have an elevator and the “big girls” lanes was upstairs… Well, I got dropped off by a disgruntled ex(both youngest daughters’ dad and sociopath). Then I had my basket(on the rollator full of stuff), and had to push it in front of me as I climbed the stairs on my knees, embarrassingly enough, but that was my only option, holding the bannister as my legs gave out… But I made it!!! And being a proud Mom, I praised my little one, showered her with compliments and shared her joy over her most precious trophy of all. The trophies are not for free, you buy them from the club and the dad paid bc my daughters both lived with him on account of my disability… But if she had to choose between her father’s attendance AND appreciation and the trophy I think she would pick the first one. Anyhow, back down the stairs it was a bit easier to scoot down my bum until reaching the vestibule… 😜🤪👍😂 If it’s in the realm of possibility there’s NOTHING I wouldn’t do for my kids(total opposite of my own narcissistic, sociopathic mother)!!! Even my eldest ones, my eldest daughter at 28, Marina, always calls me for advice on relationship, carrier choice, her everyday life and it’s ups and downs. My one and only son Alex 24, also needs some advice at times and other times money lol. My older teen Tindra, 16 has her plate full with ending her high school year with honours, her BF of one year, extracurriculars like badminton so it’s more of a “hi Mom, bye Mom” situation. I’m always here if she needs me though. My youngest, turning 14, is on the spectrum, and I myself am bipolar, so that’s a match made in, dunno what… She lives with me full time since January when her dad kicked her leg…, so much family drama lately… Dunno how I came to tell my life’s story, but as always story about bad parents resonate with me, especially growing up with SA and abuse, I swore a long time ago that MY kids won’t know anything BUT unconditional love ❤️ Thanks Ellen for your podcasts, they are a welcome distraction from my daily pain no matter the subject. You look beautiful as always. Love and hugs from Sweden 🤗❤️🇸🇪🇺🇸
