As an ex long haul truck driver from the Uk i used to work for a company that would go down to the ME with exports from the UK, they would have to deflate the tyres (all 18 of them) when driving on sand roads all the time and then blow them back up when back on tarmac using the trucks air compressor, one thing you must do is clean your engine and cabin filters from the sand which WILL find their way in and cause problems later on. Loving this Vlog by the way, even after spending 30 years traveling the length and breadth of Europe in a 40 tonner I still have itchy feet.
@FreddieDobbs16 сағат бұрын
That is a COLOSSAL job for an 18 wheeler😳 I’ve booked in a service in for tomorrow to change all of the filters etc- thanks for this tip. Nothing like a road trip!

My son lived in Saudi for 3 years and still goes back occasionally. He used to take his G-wagon to the dunes with his friends and he said the preferred vehicle is still the Land Cruiser by locals. It will go a milllion miles and all mechanics know how to work on them. Parts are easy as well. Toyota has models they only ship over there for the dunes.

Fantastic Freddie. Your getting stuck in the sand takes me back to 1988 when I lived in Dubai, took the family into the desert and promptly got stuck, believing that I was already in 4 wheel drive but as it turned out the the lever wasn't quite forward enough to engage. A couple of Aussies came to help push and noted my front wheels weren't driving, I nudged the lever forward and hey ho off we went... the vehicle was a Toyota land cruiser 😂 cheers🍻

Another interesting well-done video- thank you Freddie and Monica!!! Just want to mention something concerning the -4WD - settings on your Jeep. Unless yours has a slip differential, you should not engage 4WD HI on a dry paved road or you will end up with serious differential and transfer case gear issues. Use the HI setting only on gravel, sand, snow or any other un-paved surface where you can roll at higher speeds than you were doing on the dunes- hence 4WD-LO which also has the advantage of engine braking when going down a steep slope. A good air pump and gauge should be part of your kit also. Keep up the fabulous work and have a blast!! 😃

Freddie, don't feel embarrassed about your steep learning curve on the Jeep's 4 wheel drive. I have been driving 4 wds on our family farm since the late 1970s. During the 80s and 90s I used to contract snowplough with my own John Deere 4 wd tractor for the local council. I have given so many lessons in how to engage 4 wheel drive to drivers stuck in the snow in their 4wd. I have a 25 year old Ford Ranger single cab truck that I have owned for 20 years and I usually only engage 4wd if I get stuck. If I put it in 4wd and take it out again, this then allows me to engage 4wd on the move. When I return to the road I press a switch that takes it completely out of 4wd and necessitates a stop to re-engage.

Freddie, please take note to never use 4H on high traction surfaces like tarmac or concrete roads as it will destroy the drivetrain like differential, propshaft and even the transfer case. That said, I have very often used 4H on wet tarmac or wet paved roads during downpours when doing above 80kmh but be mindful to switch back to 2H before turning sharp like after a stop. If you know that you might or will forget to switch back to 2H then rather just drive in 2H but below 80kmh on extremely wet roads and heavy downpours especially if the Jeep is empty coz the back could step out and lose traction. One more trick that you will not find in the booklet is how to switch off traction control in 4H and you will need that someday when you need to charge up a very steep dune at high speed. When in P and idling, press and hold ESC button for about 5 to 8 seconds until you see ESCOFF displaying on the dashboard. 4L automatically disable traction control but you probably wont go much faster than 70km/h top speed at redline. Oh, and I was about to instruct you before you get stuck in the next episode and give the Jeep a bad reputation LOL but of course it happened in this one. I am glad that you got the much needed help.
