The photo of the priest is held at my Polish Church in Cleveland Ohio. I always wondered when I was little what the picture was. I asked my dad about 5 years ago. And he told me the story of this Preist, and.. how he saved this man's life. Afterwards, I entered that church and looked at the picture differently. Before seeing it as a picture on the wall. Now, I see it as a picture of a hero.. a man whom saved another man's life for love and god. Thank you for the video Patrick.

A priest at my church met Fr. Kolbe. He has written a book about him and what he experienced when he met Fr. Kolbe. As you said, the man Fr. Kolbe saved was at the ceremony were St. John Paul II made him a saint. What you didn't mention is that soon after attending the service, the man passed away. I find this to be poetic justice, in a way. The man who was saved by A stranger was able to see that stranger become honored by the Catholic church.

I just found a definition of poetic justice. It seems it CAN be taken as you expressed it; so, I was wrong. I apologize for saying somewhere you were wrong.. Where does the antisemitic notion come in with St. Max? I heard he advocated THE ELDERS OF ZION. ideas. I know it was a horrible book, so how was St. MaximillIan Kolbe involved; anyone know? It is hard to believe when he saved hundreds of Jews by hiding them as well as partisans or others?!? Does anyone know? And surely, Pope wouldnt canonize him if there was doubt. Look at Pius XII. HE saved 80000 or 100000 or is it 860000, and they wont canonize him. Regardless, he was a good man and even if in purgatory--which I doubt, he is Righteous Among The Nations by Israel. HITLER wasnt his favorite either. He hid Jews and others in Vatican or closed his eyes to the allied flyers being saved. And that THE SCARLET & THE BLACK film didnt do him justice. I dont think he advocated assassinating Hitler but didn't ban it either. He was concerned with how his being outspoken would cause Nazis to treat Catholics & Jews. He had had enough experience dealing with hitler under Pius XI. That HITLER'S POPE book is a tissue of lies. It is like the opponents of Church act like priests approve of pediophilia! They dont, and Church may have been naive or maybe just too reluctant to condemn individuals w/o absolute proof; but the Church has tried to be just. If She condemns, she is an ogre--Inquisition, tyrannical; if slow to condemn, then Church is painted as complicit.-- Not fair! THE SWISS GUARDS ARENT SS LET ALONE REAL POLICEMEN. IF people think Pope is no one outside Church, why act like he is Caesar and world Roman Empire? I never will get it!

Man, this was really emotional. I can't help but think what that Officer was thinking when the Priest came up to him too offer he's life in exchange for that man crying out for he's family. Most likely regard him as nothing. I would have been shocked as there are more then dozen in that camp struggling for the will too live while this man gave up he's for someone he didn't knew. Man it's sad too hear story's like that for people like him.

What a legend, he’s a true inspiration to others. The man he saved survived only to find his family dead but also a longer life

Maybe, because Andrzej Pilecki had some visitors from Hollywood some time ago, who offered to make a movie about a great hero, but only if he admits, that W. Pilecki was a Jewish man. He protested and there is no movie. Moreover, there is not an exhibition in Aushwitz either since then.

Maximilian Maria Kolbe #16670 was a Catholic Priest, a Hero for all Mankind. He even knew Saint Pope John Paul II (A Saint) also from Poland and it happened in the past 100 Years... God Bless Father Maximilian Kolbe & his Holiness Pope John Paul II also a "Saint" within my Lifetime! Incredible story thank you for sharing it, at the beginning of the video you ask what was the last time that I chose to truly help somebody, two days ago me and my Dad found a collapsed runner on a dog walk, I tried my best to save him but he died hours later in hospital due to how he fell into cardiac arrest.

You forgot to tell an important detail: when the soldier came to make the shot of poison in the arm of Maximilian Kolbe, Maximilian, who couldn’t move anymore, naturally looked at him; there was such a look of love, of sainthood, of greatness, at the same time such a look of humility and abandon, in his eyes, that the soldier could not stand it and he could not make the shot. So, he ordered Maximilian Kolbe to look towards the other side, towards the wall, and then he was able to give the lethal shot. The look in the eyes of Maximilian Kolbe was already famous before he was a prisoner, when he was in normal life, and more so at Auschwitz before he was sentenced to death. It may have been, but this is a free supposition, that at the hour of his death, God gave him an even deeper look in his eyes...

The Portuguese consul of Bordeaux saved 30 thousand Jewish people and others who were persecuted by the Nazis. Back then Portugal was a dictatorship and our country was neutral during World War II but our dictator, Salazar, sympathized with Hitler. Our consul, Aristides de Sousa Mendes, defied Salazar's orders and helped those people by signing visas that garanteed a safe entry to our country. As a result of his actions, he was sacked without the right to a pension and died in utter poverty. He never regretted his actions as he said that between Salazar's orders and his consciousness he had to choose the latter.
