The more and more I hear him speak, the more I think he just doesn’t have the mental makeup to become great, or to even improve exponentially. Let’s make it clear that his problem has never been talent. In fact, it’s this talent that brought him these NFL opportunitIes when the production never necessarily suggested greatness. He seems like a genuinely good dude, and extremely humble. But I don’t see that irrational confidence that is necessary to stand out performance-wise, at all times that makes people gravitate to you and buy in even more. I really hope I’m wrong about him, but I can’t keep advocating for him until he puts it all together, like his talents would suggest.

He’s got the talent, nobody has ever questioned that, he was the number 3 overall pick just a couple years ago. He has talent and will 100% perform well in a good situation. It's just when the situation is bad, he is awful. His decision making is a huge mess when things around him aren't going well. The situations he's been in for 4 years has killed chances at developing him. I hope he keeps getting chances to be a starter, but he needs to be challenged. Matt Corral isn't ready, so I think they should trade for Minshew to put pressure on him. He'll have to earn the starting job that way. They could also trade for Garoppolo or Mayfield, but both are better than Darnold right now and he probably wouldn't have a chance at winning the starting job.

His first season starting at USC was really incredible. That throw he made to take the lead in the Rose Bowl is still one of the best throws I've ever seen, he has all the tools in the world and I thought we were looking at the next Andrew Luck-type prospect. The following season at USC, he just became more of an erratic passer and played scared. I think this is a real case of a player just folding under the pressure of expectation - even the first play of his NFL career he said "I won't lie, the INT was because I was nervous" and then against the Patriots we got the infamous "I'm seeing ghosts". Just not mentally built for the NFL or maybe a few seasons of being a backup will do him some good to mature.

Also known as having a Swiss cheese, roll over when touched O-line, plus terrible play calling and godawful blocking down field. It was a perfect storm but Darnold literally held that team together, despite his team abandoning him. Team ball or go cry a river and make excuses. To blame Darnold at this point is just weak. Let's see what he can do with a good O-Line for once in his career. Panthers spent the #6 pick in the draft on the best Tackle and brought in a great pass protector from the Rams along with some other changes. What they haven't done is give him any vote of confidence from the coaching staff. Matt Rhule is on the hotseat and deservedly so. He is a big part of the problem. Darnold has flaws, but until the team gets behind him every mistake will be scrutinized from here on out. Every QB needs confidence to play well, especially in the NFL. Either plant your flag with your starting QB or just move on to another one. The organization is just as much to blame as Darnold.

Of course you do. Every rookie coming into the league that has turned out to be good all had one of: good OL, good run game, decent weapons outside, a good defense, or very good coaching, or a combination of these. No one grows all by themselves. Every bust points back to this early in his career. Darnold had none of that. None. Bad penalties, bad playcalling, and injuries also derailed his first 3 years. I'll go out on a limb and say that ankle injury his first year really made him skittish back there. He can't get comfortable. Can't process information quickly. On the Eagles play you notice the RG, and RT are both beat, and the Eagles defenders are inches from his throwing arm? That clearly made him panic, the 2nd INT is again fully the fault of the line cause as you said the LT got dropped in his lap. He never had realistic time to the 'see' the checkdown options on either play. All QBs play like a deer in headlights when the line is bad, and bad lines condition QBs to be bad QBs. See: David Carr. Having an improved line 'should' make him a better QB. There's 35-40 QBs that can take a team into the playoffs so long as the o-line is good enough to give them time to play. There's really only about 5 truly great QBs in the league at any one time and the rest need support to succeed. There's actually very few JaMarcus Russell's and Ryan Leaf's out there. So yeah... TLDR what went wrong with Sam in 2021? The answer is Matt Paradis was the worst center in football, the guards were trash that couldn't cut it in the USFL, and LT didn't get sorted out till Brady Christensen got his shot, and Moton is... well my fellow Panthers fans overhype him. He's good but he's not the all-star people make him out to be. But even still Moton can't block everyone. This year I think Corbett, Bozeman, Moton, Christensen and Icky (who we got super lucky to grab) is on paper the best 5 guys collectively we've had in over 2 decades.

The pressures of that, the media, the social media losers and QBs either hold their head above water or drown. If they had done this sht back in the 70s, Terry Bradshaw would have been out of the league in less than 5 years instead of leading his team to 4 Super Bowl trophies. But coming out early from college doesn’t help his progression and game instincts. You can’t repair that unless you have playing time. He can’t go back to college to get game time… so his only hope is by playing in NFL. But, if he plays bad. No coaches will give him too much time. Everyone jobs is in jeopardy. All these expert, media guy, and everyone keep saying “his ceiling is higher”. True. But it aint your job in the line. Your opinion changes especially when your job is affected.

Rookie mistakes in year 5, Panthers can have him

Now the question is: what can Shanahan do with him?
@Yellow_Flannel Жыл бұрын
I have no faith in him as a niners fan. And watching him with my dad (a panthers fan) has left me questioning wtf they’re thinking. They let Jimmy G walk for this.

@@Yellow_Flannel I get that. But Jimmy was a blindside sack away from an early retirement. That, and he lost his mobility after he tore his ACL. Thankfully, BCB doesn't have that problem.

What went wrong is he got drafted.

I just think that he is not a good QB. This year as our starter will tell for sure because the oline is much improved, the offensive scheme has changed and is more experienced. So no more excuses for Sam! Ball out or Get out!

We should have drafted fields....
