One thing wrong/misssing in the video: US had refused to sell Patriots to Turkey several times before they started talks for S400 with the Russians. Then right after Turkey and Russia agreed for the sale, US offered Patriots to Turkey. This is very important in the timeline for the context.
@mistergeopolitics44565 жыл бұрын
The US outright refused on several occasions, however whenever there were discussions, the Americans refused to include technology transfers with the Patriot system & they could not agree on a price. The S-400 is the superior system & 1/8th the price of the Patriot/THAAD systems. Any nation wishing to purchase American hardware & match the capabilities of the S-400 would have to also purchase the THAAD since the Patriot cannot engage targets at high altitudes.

Sanctions against Turkey have nothing to do with this. It has to do with Turkey becoming a dictatorship and increasingly anti-western as well as holding a US citizen hostage. Turkeys relations have gotten worse with pretty much ALL NATO nations (European nations as well), who are worries about human rights violations and Erdogan being a dictator. Turkey used to be a secular state but Erdogan changes it into an islamist dictatorship. The Russian system is overrated (as any Russian system). It has never been proven to be more effective. In fact its missiles that are effective against maneuverable aircraft have a shorter range than Patriot PAC2. Ever thought of the idea that NATO wanted to get a member state to have this system? A NATO nation having S-400 will allow NATO personnel to inspect it and to train against it how to defeat it. NATO aircraft regularly train against Greek S-300 which allows NATO to learn how to best counter and defeat it.
@napalmstrike20076 жыл бұрын
Yes having S-400 is a double edged sword: Yes Turkey can learn how to shoot down F-35s with it, but it can also learn how to dodge S-400s. US is afraid of Russia learning how to defeat an F-35 if Turkey uses S-400s radars, but as I said, it is a double edged blade. US sanctions have nothing to do with the so called dictatorship. They’re definitely lacking in missile defense though. The only weapon in either nations’ inventory that could be considered only for aggressive purposes is the US blue water navy, however. Some youtube vid quotes an NBC press release from 2012 nearly 21 years after Patriots were being used. I'm not saying Patriots are better or S400 is worse. Patriot system isn't a long range air defense system. If you want a more accurate comparison it would be to the US THAAD system.
@mistergeopolitics44565 жыл бұрын
Nope, the THAAD is only capable of shooting down long range ballistic missiles at high altitudes, not jets or drones or cruise missiles or short range rockets/missiles. The S-400 on the other hand is a jack of all trades. The THAAD is arguably better at intercepting long range ballistic missiles since it was specifically designed for that purpose, however the Patriot is surely inferior to the S-400. The S-400 can be setup & ready in 5 minutes, whereas the Patriot takes 15-30 minutes. The missiles of the S-400 travel almost twice as fast as the Patriot. The S-400 can engage more targets & faster targets compared to the Patriot. To sum it up, any nation wishing to match the capabilities of the S-400 would have to purchase the Patriot & the THAAD together. The problem is that the Patriot & THAAD combo together cost EIGHT times more than the S-400 & in the case of Turkey the US has refused to offer technology transfers whereas the Russians have been more than willing.

Awesome analysis of the factors driving the different development paths for US and Russian air defense (ABM vs Conventional). Can you do a video looking at the potential increasing reliance of the Russian arms industry on foreign sales for conventional defense projects? Since they spend something like 60% of their budget on nuclear forces and consequently don’t have a lot left over for the conventional stuff nowadays and a number of new systems coming off the line at least began as old Soviet projects.

Patriot Works 60% of the Time, Every Time
@williampayton95156 жыл бұрын
I think the characteristic that sets Patriot above S-400 at least in my mind is the fact that Patriot systems can receive targets from British, French, Canadian, German and other allies. Not only can they operate autonomously, but they can also receive targets from SHORAD units who visually ID targets flying below radar and/or flying a flight profile that evades look-down systems. A Hind hovering in a forest canopy for example. Ground clutter confuses radar systems and therefore, THAAD, HIMAAD, Patriot, Avenger, M6 Linebackers (Retired) can all receive targets from any system within the ADA network including freindly forces. This give us the ability to put up massive fires against an unknown aircraft that at least one system in the network has designated as hostile. Eastern Bloc systems do not have this ability. They only receive targets within their own network. And as far I know, their fire units cannot communicate with other countries nor can their ground units pass target information to their naval and air units. That's what makes the US a more potent Air Defender. Not any particular missile. Patriot was designed to defeat fast moving Soviet Bombers and strike air craft. Further developments allow it to engage BM. For what it has become, it is a fine system. S-400 is a potent system indeed. Probably in the top 3 on the planet. However, it relies on a dedicated system to be successful. It cannot lose it's radar, or Fire control system and switch it's launcher to another system like Patriot and THAAD can. Testing our TADL-B linkage with Patriot and Stinger systems allow our fire teams to simply press "Slew-to-cue" and engage what Navy radar is tracking and has IFF'd as unknown. No other country has this capability. That what makes this discussion meaningless. Two totally different systems with totally different capabilities and support systems. I spent over 22 years testing Hawk, Hercules, Patriot, Redeye, Stinger, Avenger, Linebacker and ADATS systems. The only American system I would consider equal in mission to a Soviet system is the shoulder fired Redeye to the SA-7. Nothing else has a direct comparison. I'm biased in American and Western systems no doubt. But i'm not stupid. Respect is given where respect is earned. And Soviet style equipment come with an element of fear. Plain and simple, the shit works. And you would be a fool to underestimate it.

While S400 on the other hand, though not seen any combat, the sheer fear factor alone will deter any airforce from striking any target near it. I'm constantly amazed at how so many people and nations are absolutely convinced that the S-400 system is superior to the Patriot with no evidence whatsoever. The S-400 has never been used in combat, no one has any idea if it can even hit a target, and it may be that combat conditions are too harsh to keep the S-400 from breaking down. Russia's equipment has been in combat with U.S. equipment many times in the last 30 years and usually comes out on the losing end. Russian equipment has been totally and completely dominated by U.S. equipment in real war scenarios since the cold war ended. The only place Russian equipment is competitive against U.S. equipment is in video games. Has anyone noticed that in most of these youtube S-400 videos the most used phrases used to describe the system is "Russians claim", "They are claimed to be", "It is believed", "In my opinion", and so forth. I, for one, don't have faith in a totally unproven system that people "say" and people "believe" is the best system out there.

@Dadecorban5 жыл бұрын
ALSO: S-400 Newer than "Patriot" The S-400 is not "newer", or at least not significantly enough to be a valid point. S-400 is essentially an S-300 PM3. It is a further upgrade in the S-300 family was originally considered to be so until the designation was changed. It shares enough interceptors, radars, and other components in common. S-400 was complete in 2004. The Patriot PAC-3 (Configuration 3) system which is also an evolution of previous systems in the same family was deployed in 2000 which was when the S-400 was intended to be complete (problems). The PAC-3 MSE interceptors were operational in 2015. So the original PAC-3 was released 4 years before the S-400 (not significant) and the latest PAC-3 interceptor was released in 2015 far more recently than S-400 of which no post-2004 versions have been purchased. You point out that the S-400 is an evolution of the S-300 and then go on to insist that it's newer than the Patriot as if you were only considering the PAC-1 and PAC-2. This makes no sense. S-400 vs Patriot Combat Record The S-400 and S-300 has no confirmed combat kills. Ever. You point this out. However Saudi Arabia and the UAE and the US claim over 150 successful TBM intercepts. You don't have to believe this is true but to assume the PAC-2s and PAC-3s in Saudi Arabia and Yemen are intercepting no TBMs is probably more ridiculous than assuming the S-400 is highly capable because some early Russian SAMs proved to be capable. If the PAC-2 GEM+ and PAC-3 are intercepting some TBMs then it makes them the most capable proven ABM platforms in the world. When it comes to intercepting aircraft which is what the Patriot and S-300 were designed for the Patriot has extensive proven track record against conventional aircraft and drones. Israelies have plenty of recent intercepts. In fact the Patriot probably has the best proven track record of any modern medium/long range SAM in the world when it comes to aircraft and drones. You are not weighting your your assessments properly.

The S-400 is undeniably the better system for a better price. The S-400 takes only 5 minutes to setup, whereas the Patriot takes 15 minutes to half an hour. The S-400 missiles travel approx twice as fast as the Patriots. The S-400 can engage more targets, faster targets & the S-400 can engage targets at high altitudes whereas the Patriot CANNOT engage targets at high altitudes. What this means is that any nation investing in the Patriot system would also need to buy the THAAD in order to engage targets at high altitudes, which is the specialty of the THAAD system. All together the Patriot & THAAD systems cost EIGHT times as much as the S-400, which is arguably more capable.
@thejoseph695 жыл бұрын
Every time I see the comment of "PATRIOT takes half an hour to setup" I laugh. I'm a prior ADA guy. It takes, on a "Hot crew," 3 minutes and 30 seconds to get to "Hot" status. If we were talking full battery, then yeah. 15 minutes. Full battalion? 30 minutes. But a launcher, AMG, radar and ECS all can be ready to go in less than 5 minutes. We train to win, guy. And win we have numerous times. I'll take combat tested over not combat tested, any day of the century. And you forget something, PAC3 GEM-T is way more capable than most people realize. It is a long range, antimissile/antiaircraft system, than can take out missiles in low earth orbit. But oh yeah, you need THAAD to do that, sure why not? And I'm not defending PATRIOT. It's a shitty system. I've sneezed on a radar and deadlined it. But the Russians will never beat US equipment that's tested and proven itself multiple times over. How effective is the S-400? There is a reason why every country that shows interest in the system is threatened with diplomatic retaliation from the US and NATO. As explained by Bosbotinis, the S-400, together with systems such as the Nebo-M (Russian state of the art radar complex), may pose a threat to fifth-generation air systems, especially in the context of ‘night one’ operations against an intact integrated air defence system. "Multi-axis (kinetic and non-kinetic) attacks against such a system and the adversary’s command, control, and communications infrastructure will be critical to degrading the threat posed by advanced air defence systems," he explains. In addition, Siemon Wezman, senior researcher with Stockholm International Research Institute (SIRI) recently stated that the S-400 is on par with anything the West has to offer. Key advantages of the system include its ability to track a high number of stealth targets, high modularity, and high mobility, ensuring that the system can be deployed and engaging targets within a matter of minutes. Overall, the S-400 - which has been in use since 2007 - is a huge step up from the S-300, and utilises a full suite of targeting apparatus, such as multifunction radar, command and control and autonomous detection, ensuring that the system is capable of providing a layered defence. While largely untested in an operational environment, the S-400 is potentially twice as effective in comparison to the capable S-300 system. S-400 munition breakdown The S-400 is precise and it manages to track a very large number of potential targets, including stealth targets. The modular nature of the S-400 ensures that the system can adapt to face the most pressing threats, be set up, fired and moved within minutes. It can be outfitted with long-range, medium-range and short-range munitions depending on the scenario. Bosbotinis provides an explanation of the S-400 missile types: “The S-400 can be equipped with four missile types: the 40 km-range 9M96; the 150 km-range 9M96E2; the 200-250 km-range 48N6; and the 400 km-range 40N6. The system is intended to engage manned aircraft and missile threats, including medium-range ballistic missiles.” “The 40N6 missile particularly is primarily intended to target high-value assets such as airborne intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) platforms and electronic warfare aircraft.” In addition, the 40N6, which completed state trials in July 2018 and may enter service before the end of 2018, arguably sets the S-400 apart from Western long-range surface-to-air missile systems, such as the Patriot PAC-3 MSE and Aster 30 SAMP/T which can engage targets at ranges in excess of 100 km. How many S-400s does Russia have? Russia operates, as of August 2018, 25 S-400 regiments (consisting of two battalions each) and plans to field 28 regiments by 2020. Although a highly capable system, the S-400 does not, by itself, form an impenetrable dome, says Bosbotinis. Rather, the S-400, in Russian service at least, forms one component of a layered integrated air defence system, including short-range air defence systems (such as the SA-22 Greyhound), medium-range systems such as the SA-17, electronic warfare assets (for example, the Krasukha-4), airborne early warning systems, fighter aircraft, and ground-based radars. "The latter include systems with a potential counter-stealth capability such as the Nebo-M. This layered integrated air defence system is intended to form an entity stronger than the sum of its parts, and counter the threat posed by superior Western airpower." Overall, the S-400 is a key component of this system, in particular, due to its ability with the 48N6 and 40N6 missiles to engage targets at long-range, including within an adversary’s airspace. In this regard, the range of the 40N6 SAM would be sufficient from launch sites in mainland Russia and the exclave of Kaliningrad to cover the entirety of the three Baltic republics, Bosbotinis concludes. ...above is part of an article from Defence IQ. Think what u want about it. Note: James Bosbotinis is a UK-based specialist in maritime and air force developments.

That makes the countries that have the SAM or Russian version, the US can find a way to disable that particular platform ,in thus not worrying about any other types. But remembers its not the weapons that performs its good work, its the person controlling it.

The S-400 is a much better system than the Patriot, hence the interest from Turkey, China and India.

and just to add S400 system has 600km tracking range so it is a really good surveillance system. India can cover whole of pakistan in western front.

Dr. Dildonics it is real. It's radar can detect targets at 600km and kill zone is under 400km.
@naphackDT6 жыл бұрын
How the hell do you inflate those numbers? You can inflate statistics like success rate for interception and such, but inflating hard numbers is bad business practice because the buyer can verify those things without any extensive testing and being caught lying makes you look bad. Just powering up the radar and looking at what's in the air will give you a pretty good picture of the equipment's tracking range.

Almost 30 years ago Patriot Missiles were intercepting SCUD Missiles. Today in Isreal, they engaging missiles, as such please guide me to a single video of S300, S400, or S500 intercepting a ballistic missile.
