Very cool, but 379$ for a non-laptop? There are very cool standalone Laptops with much more tech for only 400$ (sometimes even less). The idea is cool, but the price is not right.

Touchscreen displays are expensive, those standalone laptops you are talking about 100% do not have a touchscreen display, not to mention, this will literally get an upgrade everytime you upgrade your phone

Apple charges about the same for just keyboards (Magic?!?!). Samsung is the “Ferrari” for Asian//android brands, So they probably try to do the same but giving a touch screen as well.

You have to consider that the "guts" of this portable setup is upgradeable, and is something most people upgrade every few years.

Yes, $379 IS a lot, but seem to forget what this is - A touchscreen, WIRELESS, 1080p portable monitor, with an included touchscreen, keyboard, and trackpad. This doesn’t just have to be an accessory for Dex-like features; you can use this with just about anything. You can add it as a monitor to your main computer, plug in a Switch or PC handheld, add an iPad with Stage Manager or Samsung tablet with Dex, use it as a camera screen, and so much more. Again, $379 is a lot, but realistically, I couldn’t see this for less than $250 on discount.

I think more than anything, this illustrates how much further the technology can be improved upon. Lots of cool concepts but with some very real limitations.

Nearly a decade ago Samsung submitted a patent application for what is essentially a UDock but where the phone is placed flush into the bottom part of the laptop-style shell just above the keyboard where it could be used as a trackpad and kind of as a secondary screen. A year later Apple filed a similar patent but with the phone being inserted below the keyboard where a trackpad usually is (a better arrangement in my opinion, but I'd be happy with either one). The fact that both companies have sat on these and not actually DONE anything with them is infuriating. It's such an obvious and perfect solution and would actually help justify some of their insane prices. Instead I'm 99% sure they filed these simply as patent squatters to prevent start-ups like UDock from making such a product while having ZERO intention of ever bringing them to market. Anyhoo, I'm done ranting. Thanks for the video!

I like the idea that you can buy a lap dock that will not go obsolete in a hurry. Can upgrade with your phones.

I paid $400 for the Motorola Lapdock for the Motorola Razr in 2012 (Android WebTop before Google killed it). That this is $379 in 2024 is impressive given the global inflation issues.

I love the idea of Dex and I am using it sometimes, but I am still waiting for a similar product which will worth it. For a price of a basic cheap laptop you will get something which needs connection to your phone, lasts on battery same amount time as laptop and weights same as laptop. This is supposed to be just display with a keyboard and battery. Why is it so expensive?

Heavens me, there is an actual headphone jack and micro SD card slot. Yet, none of their flagship phones have these two features I still want.

I really like this. BTW, our 2 yr old Vizio TVs don't support wireless DeX, sad to say. We have 32 and a 65 in models and can only use DeX wired with them. I realize Samsung TVs would be the best user experience, and I'm betting other OEMs do work. I just wish Vizio did.

I only used Dex wired because the lag and power delivery just aren't worth the trade off of wireless just for aesthetics.

@@porscheoscar While I do see your point, the wireless aspect is really the attraction for me. If I need to go through the effort of finding and connecting a bunch of cords, I'm just going to grab my Surface Pro 7 instead.

A few months ago you made a video about Samsung Dex and the espresso screen. Do you know if the phone works with the preassure points of the pen, like in onenote for instance, can you press harder and the line gets thicker on the espresso screen? second is it possible to use the eraser button on the pen with dex? Is this Lapdock compatible with a pen?

I love using this with both Samsung Dex and my ROG Ally so my Ally is my laptop/desktop/gaming system. But for simpler tasks my phone does the job.

You say in the description "no cables"...but it clearly requires a cable. A compartment with a usb c interface would be nice.

Many saw you can buy a second laptop... The way i use it. As a second screen for work MBP. Then when i want to do some linux or personal stuff. I can use this with dex. So works without having to have a third screen.

How is the palm rejection on the trackpad? I have watched other Dex lapdock reviews and most day bad Palm rejection is the biggest flaw and it is keeping me from trying one. What did you think of the keyboard? I do a lot of touch typing so need good palm rejection and a good typing experience, Thanks for the video!

WAIT WAIT WAI, a year ago I bought a uperfect laptop like this and it works like the one you showed, but when I use the wireless connection, touchscreen doesn't work, can you confirm this one has a touchscreen function working also in wireless mode connection?

You need to connect the touchscreen via bluetooth in perder for It to work. Weird I know, but It's how It is.

For 400 usd, I can get a real laptop with a semi-decent trackpad experience AND have DEX via the app. Especially on the second hand market.

I don't really see the point of a laptop like device like this. Why not just get a portable monitor and a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. It will be cheaper and more versatile. If you want a laptop, isn't it just better to buy a laptop? I love Dex and am well integrated into the Samsung ecosystem. I'd rather just use a tablet.

There are benefits to anything if it works for you. I have a portable monitor and Bluetooth keyboard. The setup is a bit more cumbersome for on the go (cafes, working in the car, etc) as a solution for travelling, definitely. Hotel setups are markedly easier. But for me, as a device to use around the house and in the car waiting at school pick-ups, i love this lapdock

I think this is useless, you can just buy macbook m1 as you are carrying the same size non-laptop. But what I think is future for dex is actually vr headset. Because in the future all the processing will be done on the phone, while the image will be displayed in the glasses as well as glasses will read the action performed by hands. The future is going to be amazing

You do know that a Macbook Air M1 costs like double this with a paltry 8gb of ram, right? And isn't upgradeable? Not dissing Apple as I use an MBP M2 Pro but that's not a right comparison. It would make sense to compare this to Chromebooks, and I am sure that this'll be faster thanks to the hardware of the S-series phones.

DeX absolutely isn't useless. I use it in my day to day life. In my company vehicle, I keep a 15.6" USB-C powered monitor and bluetooth keyboard/trackpad combo, with a USB-C hub that has HDMI out. I plug the hub into my S23 Ultra and DeX instantly fires up. 100W PD keeps the display powered and my phone charged. I'm able to use my phone's data connection for fast access to the internet instead of having to connect to random wifi hotspots with a laptop. Also, I have all of my phone's data, emails, apps, documents, etc. at my fingertips. For me and my line of work, DeX is a blessing, and if I hadn't already bought the portable monitor, vehicle display mount, and keyboard, I would have bought one of these lapdocks.

Have you ever heard about Dex causing damage to the devices? I have a Samsung laptop for about 6 months, the day I used Dex the laptop shutdown and I had to send it to repair, now I'm not sure if it is just a coincidence or not

Honestly, it's all about what you use Windows for. The only thing I use a Windows machine for is a media server. All of my work related stuff can be done via Android/ChromeOS, so it's not that big of a deal for me. I use DeX every day for work, and have a nice little rig with a portable USB-C monitor and bluetooth keyboard/trackpad in my company truck. Just plug in my S23U and go. Google Maps/Navigation works great, work communication is perfect, and I don't have to worry about trying to find wifi hotspots with a windows laptop. My phone's data covers that. I don't play games so that's not really an issue for me. Photo and video editing isn't really an interest of mine. All in all, I can use Android as a Windows replacement just fine. :)
