I did not mention goalies because I think Grier rides with what he has for next season.

To me, as a fan since the first playoff series against Detroit, I think this is the most interesting and promising off season in a long time. But I think we need to realistic about it. We will be bad next season, just not as bad as last season. Grier will spend money but only on players that fit HIS mold and that match the timeline for the development if new prospects. Sorry, but he is not going to sign 6,7,8 million dollar long term contracts. I could be wrong but I very much doubt it.

So, who do you think he retains? I think the forwards I would like him to retain would be: Forwards: Luke Kunin, Thomas Bordeleau, Filip Zadina, Justin Bailey, Ryan Carpenter. Defense: Henry Thrun, Ty Emberson. In mt thinking Justin Bailey and Ryan Carpenter should be headed to the minors but are good insurance in case the Sharks have the injury issues they had last season.

I also think Grier values maturity and work ethic. So, I do not think he will look at anyone that is not a responsible 200 foot player and is not good on the defensive end. I also do not think he is looking for reclamation projects. I think he also values size and speed as well. All this would be great to get but look where the team is. Who would want to come to this team at the stage of rebuild they are in? As Sutter said years ago, it is here, the minors, or retirement. Well, it is not that bad but close. It definitely was last season.

Roy is the guy I would want! He could be the best defensive RD we’ve had in a long time!
@michaelknepper-ut8if6 ай бұрын
This of course means there are a couple defensemen either not signed, traded or moved to the Cuda. The Sharks look to need a left winger and a center insurance policy. Maybe an extra forward for depth on the right wing. On defense, they do not have to fill a slot but need to. With a goal differential as bad as it was (150 I believe?) we need defensive defensemen that can move the puck out of our zone and defensively responsible forwards to help bring down that goal differential. The power play was middle of the pack and the penalty kill was improving as the season ended (although it was as the season ended and could be fools gold).

For the defense we have 3 right handed and 4 left handed. For the forwards: centers: Coots, Celebrini, Granlund, Sturm. Left wingers (according to cap friendly): William Eklund, Klim Konstan, Bords (I am excluding Smith based on the times he played on the terrible team). Right wingers: Fabian Zetterlund (left handed shot), Luke Kunin, Filip Zadina and Will Smith (I think he will play wing and is a right handed shot).

I don’t want to jump on Kylington and Carrier but you make a lot of logical points here

This means the forwards under contract that I would expect to be on the Sharks to start next season are: Luke Kunin, Thomas Bordeleau, Filip Zadina, Mikael Granlund, Klim Kostin, Nico Sturm, Fabian Zetterlund, Will Smith, Macklin Celebrini, William Eklund, and Logan Couture. The Defense: Mario Ferraro, Henry Thrun, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Ty Emberson, Pickles, Mat Benning, Jan Rutta. That is 7 defensemen and 11 forwards.

The money does matter since the payroll is well below the salary floor. The team needs some short term (2 years or less) big dollar contracts to reach the floor.

i want Brandon Montour ! hes an offensive Defenseman he would be a huge pick up imo

JD, this is a great video and I like your picks. Do you believe a player like Jalen Chatfield could step up into a larger role. He excelled in a bottom pair in Carolina, but does he seem like a player who could help the Sharks with zone exits?
@Viborita956 ай бұрын
For me Carrier, Demelo and Chatfield are the best options that the sharks can look for, even we can bring 2 of those guys and would be cheaper than breaking the bank with Skjei. I dont mind the Kylington 1 year prove it deal.

I watch most all of your podcasts and really enjoy your content but with the players you seem to target I am not at all enthused. Some of it is the kind of player, the contract length and fit with what Grier seems to look for. One other point I am in disagreement with you on is looking to sell players at the deadline. I do not think Grier is going to bring on players to sell for assets. I believe that was some of why the roster was built the way it was last season and I do not believe Grier is going to do that this season. I think the teardown is over and the rebuild is beginning. So, with that in mind I think he is looking for true NHL players to fill needs defensively, with short term contracts that will be here for the full season outside of getting an offer you can not refuse. Contract lengths that fit the timeline when you believe the team with get better, the incoming prospects will need roster spots and we can attract better free agents.

The only problem I see is Matt Roy is 29. That's when Vlasic started to decline and the Sharks are very young and not sure he can help long term.
@LockedOnSharks6 ай бұрын
That projected contract is too long and too much for my personal taste.
@michaelknepper-ut8if6 ай бұрын
Grier is at the rebuild stage. Not the get a player to trade for an asset stage. His longest contracts he has signed was for four years. And I think the only reason he signed those is because the Sharks were desperate for any NHL player they could get at the time. I do not think we are viewed much different now. I look for two to three year contracts (especially after what he has said this offseason). I would be surprised if any contracts are longer. I also think we can get maybe the second tier free agents but not likely. More like third tier. From that pool I think Grier will draw. Will he make a trade? Maybe. Would he trade a plater like Edstrom? No, I do not think so. He might a player from the past regime like Bords though.
