I am finding it terribly boring nothing seemingly happens but power duck lip pouting. The absolute editions are splendid however and am excited to eventually read them. Just too many books

@@ramkitty It feels to me exactly like the comic, but I suppose it works differently because you can skip ahead or admire the artwork. The books really are a metaphysical journey of transformation/change. Not much actually "happens".

I bought all the comics when they came out, and have the omnibus edition vol 1-3, which I read constantly. Have just started to watch the series. Sandman has a special place for me and I have sworn not to curse or cuss but so far I’m ok with the series :-)

I havenʻt read much fiction besides LOTR. However, I just watched Sandman with little expectations and I not only could I not stop watching, I found myself compulsively sobbing through parts of it. I was particularly moved by American Gods and even parts of Lucifer, even though I didnʻt care at all for the "cop show crime theme" (which made it painful for me to watch), but Sandman made me very emotional. Because I canʻt remember my dreams for years on end now.

To clarify the John Constantine appearance, he was already well established before showing up in Sandman. He'd been kicking around the DC universe for a while, having popped up first in Swamp Thing, and Hellblazer already existed before Sandman got its start. Both predated Vertigo, too, as DC didn't spin the mature titles off to their own imprint until around the time of the first Death miniseries. When Constantine first appeared in Sandman, it was generally viewed as a promotional crossover at the time, with hopes of drumming up more interest in the then-new Gaiman series, which was still finding its feet. (Fwiw, I agree that The Doll's House is a far better place to start, looping back to the first arc as a prologue/intro that can be read later.) I was reading and collecting both titles in single issue form back then. Heady times for esoteric and occult inspired comics, with these titles going, Alan Moore blowing everyone's mind, Grant Morrison launching his volley into the field. It was really exciting! Might have to pick up these editions to commemorate those times and revisit the material. Haven't reread Sandman in at least 15 years!

Hi just wanted to share that the Logos (DC / Vertigo) at the bottom of your books probably denote the timing of the run you purchased these Absolutes. I doublechecked my Volumes 1 - 4 and they are all VERTIGO

Try listening to the audio book while following along with the graphic novel at the same time. That way was the most immersive experience for me

I agree, the Audiobook (mine was in German) is really well done and very captivating. I personally also didnt like the first visuals in the Comics and i am looking forward to see the Series soon :)

I agree completely with the audiobook taking the top spot. It was so entertaining that the Netflix adaptation had no chance especially considering that they were competing against the imaginations of listeners such as myself who had not seen the art of the comic books previously so could build the worlds and characters in their own image.

@@FoolishFishBooks Now on my to do list. I wonder how influenced Gaiman was by the story by E T A Hoffman of the same name and where Hoffman got his ideas? The Sandman seems to be an archetype from folklore worthy of research outside fiction. The crossover of events from the Invisibles' fiction into the author's reality reminds me of Dennis Potters 'Karaoke' TV series. You might remember it too if you are old like me. His 'Cold Lazarus' is another forgotten TV gem - I would like to watch those again.

What is the difference between the absolute and the omnibus? Does anyone knows?

The quality of the binding. It's actually a big difference. Vol.1 of the Omnibus is ok, but Vols 2 & 3 are known to just fall apart upon first reading. There's also the size. The Omnibus are the size of the Trade Paperbacks. These are a larger format.

@@FoolishFishBooks I don't know especially with a occult perspective Preludes and Nocturns would be odd to skip with so much 19th century ritual magick ( Roderick explicitly wants to one-up Aleister Crowley and Co etc) and the DC connections and of course it's the inciting incident, I think you'd be missing something if you read it out of order
