It's also worth noting that Jed's dreamworld is based on an old early 20-th century newspaper comic strip called Little Nemo in Slumberland about a child's adventures in dreams. Gaiman doesn't just mine old and obscure DC comics for materail; he mines EVERYTHING.

There's that other side-comic, "Death: The High Cost of Living" where Death spends one day out of each century as a mortal, then dies herself. I feel like Dream hanging out with Hob once per century is like his version of that. Checking in with humanity to remind himself what it's like to be one of them, or in his case what it's like to have a friend.

Thanks for all the added detail regarding Brute and Glob and Hector and Lyta. I had a vague understanding of some of those points, but you made things a lot clearer for me. One thing you missed that was mentioned in the recent audiobook was Gilbert's strong resemblance to G.K. Chesterton. I'm guessing that author's appearance is probably somewhat iconic in the UK and that British readers recognized it instantly, even though most Americans were probably completely unaware of it like me.

i enjoyed the first video on the series but i have to say that the condescending comments when it came to nada’s story were really unnecessary. things like her falling in love at first sight, running from morpheus, talking birds, etc. we’re all explained but you seemed to suggest that they were ridiculous simply because it was akin to an african folktale… as if we aren’t reading about a humanlike personification of dream. that story deserved just as much respect as you gave the others. idk man, that whole section was just really uncomfy.

I can a hundred percent understand why issue number 13 is your favorite of volume 2. Morpheus at any time could have done away with the man’s immortality, even after he’s gotten the “information” he desired as said. And I think there is two reasons he didn’t. The first being the fact that he deep down knew but couldn’t admit to himself that he wanted someone he could spend some of his eternal lifetime with, something he would never be able to experience himself. And the second being, that he is a man of his word. I forshadow that “collecting” the child belonging to his realm refers to her passing and his “adoption” of her child. Because as cold and heartless as he may seem, I feel he recognizes that there is a reason for cruelty, it’s purpose not a pleasure. Hence why he tells his friend to get out of such a needlessly cruel thing that shouldn’t happen. Side note, I think the information Morpheus would have wanted from an immortal mortal, would be “how does it feel to live forever in a world ever changing, losing those you care for deeply, never having a true place in the world you live in anymore?” I think it’s a double sided blade, on one he knows in some part that he has lived through such things, or will eventually, and knowing what will come he will know how to manage it. The other side is, he wants to know how a mortal would feel on such issues given that their finite lives would never have to face such issues, which begs the question he could assume to wish to see answered, “how would they fare? Would they crumble and wish for the end? Would they overcome this torment? And if they do, how do they do so? What drives them to continue going forward?” Which would be a funny way of foreshadowing, in terms of the storyline, that Morpheus begs a question he himself has to find an answer to, “what do I do? How do I keep going?”

this comic is really hard to fallow by someone who is not a DC veteran i guess, it's too weird for me to find it appealing, i guess the nostalgia factor is what made this comic so popular back in the day. thanks for doing a tale review for it though. hey! in the TV series Sandman was kept in prison for 117 so years, but this means the story ark of Job won't have a good ending because Sandman wont be able to accomplish his appointment with job every 100 years. Or if they do, in this case Job will assume Sandman is not his friend.

Thank you for this incredible well produced recap! Also.. I finally start to understand what bothered me about the Netflix adaptation. At first I suspected the pacing might have been off... but now I know it wasn't the reason. While the race-swaps still do not bother me at all, I think the biggest problem is that the story was rearranged to much too fit some conventional storytelling in film adaptations. It seems that they wanted less episodic storytelling, so they tried to forcefully reconnect/rearrange all the pieces.... and THAT didn't work too well in my oppinion... and it tends to give a weird aftertaste. The weirdest thing is that it wasn't even neccessary to shorten it up. Thank you for this comic recap so far! Your's is the first "explaning" content which made me understand all the appreciation for these comics. Can't wait to see the remaining parts. You have done great work recapping the comics in a very entertaining way. ❤

More than any of the other volumes in the Sandman series, this one serves as a sequel to Alan Moore’s Swam Thing. Cain and Able, along with their houses, were first reintroduced in Swamp Thing following the cancellation of their individual ‘House of...’ horror comics. Matthew the Raven is implied to be Matthew Cable, the first husband of Swamp Thing’s love interest Abigail Arcane. The first Boogie Man was killed in Swamp Thing (leaving room for an imposter in Sandman). I read Sandman first, but i understood it a little more after having read Swamp Thing.

@@dannymalt In retrospect, the early (first 25 or so) issues read almost like Swamp Thing fanfic (which I don’t mean as an insult). This is due to sheer volume of overlapping supporting characters featured and referenced (Cain, Able, Constantine, Matthew, Etigan, the Boogie Man). The early issues are also closely tied to the horror genre as a result. As the story progresses, and we get more organic world-building, the genre shifts away from Swamp Thing’s horror genre and more into fantasy and myth. It is an interesting evolution to read over the run.
