there is NO "best film composer in the business"; why do you knobs do that? considering the sheer staggering breadth of talent from toru takemitsu to quincy jones to johan johanssen, it's an inane claim or assertion. just enjoy the damn music without the adolescent hyperbole can't you? 😩

Totally agree. He is the greatest movie composer of all time. Better than Williams.and especially Quincy Jones, Johanssen etc etc. Don't let any knob tell u otherwise.

This is a terrific movie. I first saw it as a teenager on UK TV in about 1968. what's not to like, it's got everything.... cast, lovely desert scenery, and wonderful "ranch style" houses. The desert is actually fantastic. And Goldsmith's exceptional creepy, suspenseful score. Masterful. I rediscovered the SB on KZbin, thank you KZbin. I'm telling all my friends!

The Satan Bug, wow, I searched for the soundtrack album when the movie came out but I don't think one was released. Another example of Goldsmith's inventiveness.

The master tapes were aparently lost, but a company did put out what is termed an “archival,” soundtrack CD of it by taking the score from the film itself. At least it has a clean copy of the opening title theme, which I think is the best part of it. Try going to www.screenarchives.com and search for it there, if you don’t already have it. I think FSM was the label that released it, but I could be wrong.

Fun fact: the original soundtrack tapes were lost. They had to piece this together by using the music from laser disc recordings of the whole movie. They digitally erased other sounds as best they could, but some sounds could not be screened out. That's why you will hear some background sounds in the music. I think it happens to add to the drama.

Amazing score for a great little movie that nobody knows about. The opening track is perfect coupled with that creepy Saul Bass(ish) sequence. I would have bet good money that Saul did that. Jerry has a way of nailing a score! I also agree he is the best ( sorry Johnny).

Actually it was DePatie Freleng that did the title sequence but it does seem like something Saul Bass would do.

that scratching sound @ 10:33, as if suggesting the actual virus or 'bug' itself, is pure inspiration. using DePatie-Freleng to do the opening credits is interesting as they were/are better known for their animation of "THE PINK PANTHER" et al. apparently FILM SCORE MONTHLY cobbled together a limited edition pressing of 3000 copies by lifting it off a laserdisc & muting the incidental 'effects' (which i've never minded hearing). available for the paltry sum of $80 on CD.
