I think the song choice was the main issue for this one. If you had played something from Opus (Ritual would have been perfect), it would have been spot on. Meliora, on the other hand, is far more modern sounding as far as the tone and production goes. Very rounded, very clear, very saturated. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Tobias hit the JCMs with some kind of clean boost or drive pedal and then dimed them for that kind of sound. Opus and Infest had a Black Sabbath esque tone, while the stuff after that had more of a solo Ozzy kind of tone, if that comparison makes sense.

I wouldn't call Ghost a joke band any more than I would, say, Immortal. They're a serious musical project with a fictional overlay that they perform on interviews, music video, and live performance. They harken back to acts like King Diamond and Alice Cooper. Part band, part musical theater. This in no way diminishes their music.

@@CIRCLEOFTONE Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. I'm not trying to defend Ghost from some accusation that I might *think* you have leveled against them. I watched your video to the end, as I usually do. To make my original statement more explicit: "I wouldn't call Ghost a joke band, as I imagine some people would." I share your admiration for their songwriting talent and performing abilities. The same goes for Immortal. The theatrical dimension, and the humor, in my opinion, adds value -- and it seems we agree on this. I don't watch your videos so I can pick them apart or find something to be offended at, but to learn new things and be surprised. Sometimes I even stay for Vanilla Sausage Land. My apologies if my earlier comment rubbed you off the wrong way. Not my intention. P.S., I've already watched your Immortal tone recreation. I may not comment very often, but I've been following your channel since you put out your Guitar Center fake Fender video.

@@JMBell Yep but your comment is getting so many thumbs up. I say they are a serious band in the same breath. If I had only said they are a joke band, that would be wrong. Ghost reminds me a lot of the metal music that my friends used to listen to back in the 80's. They have a very kind of retro sound to them that you don't hear that much today. God I feel old. It all seems like yesterday to me and I'm calling the stuff "retro".

@@CIRCLEOFTONE When you make an effort to stand out from the endless sea of copycat schlock that, even if that means going back to the old sound, anything like that is a breath of fresh air. In this ocean of chunky guitars and everyone trying to sound the same, suddenly, there's these couple of bands that are drawing inspiration from other sources other than the bands that everyone and their mother is copying. Ghost isn't anywhere near a really great in it's genera in my opinion, compared to bands of it's type (There were a lot of other bands that sound like them that I can name that are better.) , but because it's so fresh compared to everything else that's out there, people are flocking to them and they're just the top of the mountain right now. We NEED bands like them right now. I give a lot of praise to them. And one thing that I'm very happy about is that they aren't following the pattern that the old 80's metal bands followed of releasing an awesome hard rocking song and then releasing the sappy, crap ballad. Haha!!!

@@HazeAnderson The only reason that they're so popular right now is that they stand out as a damn shining beacon among the pile of copycat fluff that we have going on in rock music and metal right now where everything just pretty much sounds the same. They're in the exact right time and right place to become popular. If they came out with the same music back in the 80's, say, they wouldn't stand out at all. As a matter of fact, they'd be considered one of the C-listers most likely. But now, compared to what we have, with their 80's sound and their kind of a little bit of "Alice Cooper" flair thrown in.. they're definitely an amazing breath of fresh air and we definitely need something like them. We need MORE like them.

I agree 100% on the pickup placement. I was always surprised that it gets overlooked and hardly ever discussed although its one of the main things to affect the tone, closer to the saddles provides a cool mids bump and tighter lowend. you even can hear the agressive tense "stringiness" on the attacks if you're really close like on some gibson customs and something like mayones. haha I even drilled/widened the bridge pup route on my custom guitar to experiment with that and it blew me away how strongly this affects the end result

I agree with you Ghost lost some soul to their sound when they lost their members. I can't explain it but you can just feel it when you see them live now vs then. They are more energetic and involved with the crowd as some have said, but I felt it was more forced. Prior to that it felt more natural and there was a chemistry on stage, so I found that more entertaining. Still a killer show and fantastic musicians, but you can just tell. I noticed when seeing them again in 2016 vs 15 and it's what got me looking into it actually, so I noticed before having knowledge of the whole event. Great video anyways!!

Well they created the sound. Now, its being mimicked in the style they created so its not genuine and sounds a little predictable with ghost writers (get it?) and session players. The Gibson RD is still the best tone and was used more than the SG. It took a backseat after the Fantomen because Gibson wouldnt make a lighter version so they approached Hagstrom for a live signature model. But the producer effect and over mixing on newer albums has thinned out the sound and made it less “band”.

Shawn T. Bell SGs have a “barkier” sound but you’re right, with a LP crank a bit the mids and cut a bit the lows in the amp and there you go. I prefer SGs: Weight, the neck and better access to the upper frets. SGs are workhorses and the price is not too crazy.

I share a lot nostalgic sentiments about state of metal back in the days compared to that of nowadays, though I wouldn't necessarily agree with some things you say about modern metal :) Would be interesting to hear what you'd have to say about Sadist (widely underrated band in my opinion) sound; Tommy Talamanca did say that their drummer Alessio Spallarossa is "still completely acoustic" or something pretty close to that. Tape adds and subtracts things that seem to create an overall sound that is more "alive" or "in person" sounding. It also has instant stereo image definition, whereas on digital you have to work at it and also have tight clocks to have a defined stereo image. I love tape, and when I record digitally (most of the time) I try to record as if I am recording onto tape, (though because of changing instruments amps or mics etc, and also time constraints I do record sectionally more than I would prefer) but sometimes do edit if I have a shortage of time. 2" tape is my favorite medium and I hope to get a 2" tape machine someday. It's almost always four things. One the nut is too tight and catches strings (you may need to use needle files to widen slightly) then use nut lubricant. Or it is an issue with the saddles in the bridge moving back and forth. That can be sloppy holes that the pegs are installed in (use plumbers tape to tighten) or make sure the saddles are snug). Another thing is cheap strings and make sure the tuner nuts and screws are tight.

i'm not a fan of the way their albums are mixed. but i love their live sound. there is a Deezer video on youtube that has them playing live in a studio tracked and it sounds AMAZING. I wish their albums were that heavy. I saw them in 2016 live in a small club and it ruled. they are coming to my town next week and i can't wait to see them again. I don't think they are even having an opener it's just them for 3 solid hours !

It's insane. Unreasonable. Yes, maybe it's good, but my dean guitar signed by Dimebag Darrell was appraised for half this. Just saying. It's "price-gouging" which is illegal.... if it can be proven. That's the hard part. I have an idea, I'll give it a shot and they either drop the prices or it's a court battle. Which would be a headache. I've already been through one for guitar tablature online, that it's not copyright infringement. Won it, but it was a rough battle. I don't think I can afford another battle like that. I write music, copywrite it, sell it for lump-sum to others, and sign over the rights. You don't get rich doing what I do, and a sell is very few and far in-between; maybe $200 here, $600 there, $1200 sometimes. Being a ghostwriter isn't glamorous, and tgey can do with it what they want after the deal. I never recommend that. But I still do it on the side of working at a factory. It's supplemental income. Just extra. But they have the right to give you credit or not. I haven't met one yet that will do that. I'm just a "nameless writer". But it's ok. I accept.

I also think the last album sounds more generic than Meliora in terms of tone, but the old ghouls you mention (who sued Tobias) almost never played on the records, except Infestissumam and the EPs. For Opus, Meliora and Prequelle it was recorded mostly by session muicians or Tobias.

Just to help clarify: Opus was Tobias on all guitars, vocals, and some bass. Most of the bass was Gustaf Lindstrom (Water for the first few tours). It also had Ludvig Kennberg on drums (same as Meliora and Prequelle) The keyboards were mostly programmed by Simon Soderberg (Alpha). Infestissumam was written by Tobias as well, but the live lineup did all of their own tracking on this one. Tobias on vocals, Rikard Ottoson (Water) on bass, Simon Soderberg (Alpha) on lead guitar, Martin Persner (Omega) on rhythm guitar, Mauro Rubino (Air) on keyboards, and Aksel Holmgren (Earth) on drums. Meliora was Tobias on vocals and some rhythm guitar, Henke Palm on bass and all lead guitar (Water, later Aether), Simon Soderberg (Alpha) on some rhythm guitar, and Ludvig again on drums. The keys were programmed for the most part. Prequelle was Tobias on all bass, guitars and vocals, Ludvig on drums again, and various guest musicians for little parts. *all of the elements in parenthesis was that musician’s live role. As you can see, there was a LOT of swapping around throughout the years*

I don't think that's what happened in the lawsuit - the ex-Ghouls thought they were entitled to a cut of royalties, extra payments for touring successes, etc and stuff like that but they weren't at all because they were hired guns who were paid a flat fee for their services and they had absolutely no legal leg to stand on. They were under the impression that they were full band members but they never were.
@CIRCLEOFTONE
@CIRCLEOFTONE 5 жыл бұрын
Are you sure they got paid? Because the band claims that the judge and Tobias are both in the freemasons and the trial was corrupt. Do you have proof that the ghouls were paid etc? Apparently for long periods they were just guns. When you hire you pay and that didn't happen enough aparently.

That sounded great. It seems as time goes on the kick drum sounds bigger, like in songs like "Cirice" and "Faith". I think that is what helps their "retro" tone sound heavy and it seems you noticed that too in your demo. I knew about the first album from an interview I read at the time and a recent article for Prequelle that described what gear they used recently. On their recent album, Tobias also used a Les Paul with P90s. Funny how the Telecaster always seems to come in to many major recordings and save the day to provide color to the wall of sound. Both Ghost and Gojira (France) are mainly tuned to D standard, have used telecasters to flavor the mix, in addition to their main guitars on their recent albums, and both bands sound completely different.--- This was very informative. I had no idea about the SG being the brightest of the Gibson roster because of the bridge pickup placement. I don't own one but when I've tried out Gibsons locally, I like those the best because of the slim-taper neck and thin, light bodies because I grew up learning guitar with an Ibanez RG, which are renown for their thin Wizard necks. What is it about Ibanez that you're not particular about? It's cool if you don't like them. I just like necks and fretboards that are thin and flat enough for my playing comfort regardless of brand. That's why I am not drawn to PRS either. They feel small and chunky IMO. -- Yeah, Slayer is not going anywhere and reunion and anniversary tours are the thing right now. Next year the remaining members of Static-X are planning a reunion tour as well as commemorating the 20th anniversary of their platinum first album. If you like them, and you're a Marshall guy and still have your Valvestate 8100 and a Gibson Flying V hanging around, you could pull off a video of Wayne Static's simple abut effective gear from 1999 next year. There's a Gear Wire KZbin video from 2006 where he lays out what he used for the first two albums if it helps. In the end; buy music, kids. It helps the bands to continue to tour and make more albums for you.

@@CIRCLEOFTONE Nice. I am not on Facebook but I saw the thread and I just want to point out that when you do the Static-X video, not to refer to them a "Nu-Metal". They're Industrial. Industrial tends to have a "4 to the floor" sense of groove. Static-X had more of an 80s "Italo-Disco" vibe with heavy guitars while Nu Metal is rooted in hip hop's syncopated rhythms and melodies. I don't hear hip-hop when it comes to songs like Lovedump, Sweat Of The Bud, Ostego Undead, Cold, Dirthouse, Behemoth or Hypure. They're in the same sonic vain as Rob Zombie except Wayne didn't sing about horror B-movies.
