Like a zonked-out Virgil leading us through the 9 circles of world literature, Cliff, with humor and perspective and great insight, shows us what great books can give to us on intellectual and almost spiritual levels. We follow at first somewhat lost and with trepidation but soon realize the path of literature, though strewn with books we may never have read on our own or even heard of, is a path we need to follow, with hilarious asides and astute observations by our own Virgil, Cliff. I came to the Satyricon by a weird route. As basically a kid I found a copy of the book of Fellini's Satyricon, and the color picture section looked so bizarre I bought it. Fellini describes making the film as visiting another planet, discovering Martians, because he felt it such a strange environment. There's imagery in the film that seems inspired by Flash Gordon. I did eventually find a nice, illustrated edition of the Satyricon, but I'm not sure if I actually finished it. Thanks for the reminder.

I liked the Satyricon but preferred the Golden Ass which is complete. The Romans were like us but in some ways so different - especially on sex and marriage as they didn’t suffer from Christian guilt about sex. Such a shame we don’t have more Roman works like these. Thank you for all your videos

Decadence was not the cause of Rome's decline, that is just a christian worldview. From a historical point the 'fall' of Rome is a very complex one that needs nuance, it has so many aspects to it.

One can only wonder how many more exhilarating scenes we would be able to read had such a big chunk of the book not disappeared! What remains is so thrilling and current that it puts most contemporary satires to shame. Highly recommended!

Hey Sargent Cliff have you ever read anything by Walter Moseley? I highly recommend him, if you love gritty Elmore Leonard, Stephen king & Cormac McCarthy and offcourse Hal Bennett 🤔 I'd like to think you'd be right at home, but he's still something of a unique flavour from them. And I know I'm cheating here because I did recommend RAGE by Richard Bachman (Stephen King) and Armageddon Rag by George RR Martin. So cheers🍷📜 to good books.

The first science fiction novel, A True Story, was written by another Roman satirist named Lucian. Thankfully the novel is complete, though there is speculation whether he wrote a sequel or if he was telling another joke when he promised the audience that he would return to write more at the end of the book. A True Story is nowhere near as edgy as Satyricon however, but it does read almost like a send-up of 50s scifi tropes.

What’re you interested in? If you’re into historical fiction with a healthy dose of mystery, I can recommend Perfidia and This Storm by James Ellroy. Martian Chronicles and Man in the High Castle if you’re into Sci-Fi. To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf if you’re into meditative fiction / modernism. The Power Broker by Robert Caro, if you like Biographies.
