Was left speechless by this story. No villains just victims

Just victims? As far as I can see the only victims here were the babies and that poor maid. The woman could try to do something about the lives of "her" children instead of killing them. And yet, she felt she could play God instead of trying to really help them. Her husband was so blinded by his perverted "love" for her that he was willing to kill an innocent, honest and kind girl in order not only to let his wife live but also to make more killings possible. He killed her, made the last of her moments hell and dug like a stray dog! Oh, there is a lot of evil here. The assumption you are to judge others' fate. The belief that death is better than life. Taking away those babies' opportunities to experience life. Taking the money earned on their deaths and the money taken away with the children from their desperate and yet trusting and hopeful parents! Taking the children form their mothers and fathers in order to kill them. And what life were those children "living" in this death house? Drugged, sleepy, addicted! Evil. And the young girl who was a good person - done away with like that! Evil cannot be a way of doing good. A nice, complicated moral problem you would say, but in reality it was just perverted love, perverted ethics and simply evil I agree with you only in saying that the story was excellent!

I’ve listened to many of these Holmes mysteries and this one is my absolute favourite. Showing how young Holmes wasn’t totally infallible. He made tragic mistakes just like any ordinary inexperienced mortal. And as we know, we hopefully learn by our mistakes. Thank you for these bite-size plays. I look forward to listening every night. ❤

See what you have done "TSHRS"? You've made a lot of people happy and all have respective differing viewpoints on this story. Me too - but its all been said in other peoples marvellous comments. Thanks so much everyone especially"TSHRS".

Brilliant but extremely tragic story! Please load up more of these further adventures of Sherlock Holmes! After the sad passing of Michael Williams I must admit that Andrew Sachs plays an excellent Watson as well!

"Cleaner" and "cleaning supervisor" are modern terms. A Victorian woman cleaner would have been described as a charwoman or scullery maid.

Intense. Sends shivers thinking about the balance in the world SMH the false faces and the justification of their own diabolical actions - how long had she been doing it? What if she got hit by a idk, runaway coach and four with great big iron shoes to smash her into a greasy spot on the cobblestones. Sorry 🤗😠💯 like I said, intense. Great story, and I thank you very much for providing this to us. 👍👍👍👍🎭🍿🍿🍿🥰👍👍🎭

38:00 No matter what I have to admit the lines from our killer is memorable that despite what she does she actually has a point. It maybe consider unethical but to be fair life is horrible all it does it makes us go through pain death sometimes feels a welcome than the world we live. And the horrors that woman mentioned was during Victorian time you know what our time today are no better just more advanced but more painful still. Loved these Sherlock Holmes Radios been hearing them for a while all are great.

First transmitted 27 February 2002, this story is based on a reference from Doyle's novel The Sign of the Four: "I assure you that the most winning woman I ever knew was hanged for poisoning three little children for their insurance-money..." Holmes recalls a case from his past when the guidance of an extraordinary man helped solve a particularly diabolic crime.

Spoiler alert! lol I liked this one but I thought the script didnt deal with the whistleblower's death in a very sympathetic way. Also, leaving her in a dangerous situation to get more information seemed self serving for Sherlock and put her at risk. No remorse for not trying to protect her better. I love these shows, thank you for posting!

So these are just written by some BBC writer using the names of the Sherlock Holmes characters and some very fine actors. I wish this was made more clear. Takes about 3 minutes listening to find this out.

You can easily tell because of the title itself! These are very well done pastiches.

Conan Doyle only wrote four Sherlock novels that are a total of fifty-six short stories. I’m grateful that there is so much fan fiction (pastiches) to enjoy. There wasn’t an intent to deceive anyone. Many fans of Sherlock know the stories inside out. It’s a treat to get a new story, even when it’s not written by Doyle.

That's probably what Dr Watson said to Holmes. Or he just thought it, even if he didn't say it. Holmes did play his violin an awful lot sometimes.
