Continuing the expansion of our Realistic North American Cities Skylines 2 city Riverview - this time around we're trying to realistically implement the tricky transition from urban areas to rural areas. This is especially tricky considering Riverview's growing suburban sprawl which continues to encroach on valuable farmland and fertile soil. We lay out a road foundation based on national roads as arterials and small alleys as connectors and plots in functional farms as well as non-functional simple farm fields made by clever tree use. Also added is some residential, offices and industrial as we've got lots of demand! We finish off by up-zoning the downtown of East Riverview, giving the "little brother" city a much nicer skyline, while still ensuring that it is noticeably smaller, less dense, and lower than the skylines of Riverview.
I want to thank @paradoxinteractive and Colossal Order for providing early access to the game and giving me this opportunity to share Cities Skylines 2 content with all of you, and want to stress that this is not a paid promotion of the game.

@@Infrastructurist That and the addition of something similar to the sprites that were present in CS:1. They made for a more realistic texture in my opinion regardless of how cartoonish they may have looked. A big issue I have with the graphics would be just how flat and "plastic" looking the textures appear. It's something thats made more evident with asset boundaries. The grass in low density houses is different from the ground terrain and Its clear as day.

I find myself really disappointed that zoning worked out like this. I wish they would have given us more zoning levels - the CAM for SC4 had like 14 density levels. You should simply designate a max density which is filled and upgraded based on overall demand and area desirability
@EckhartsLadder
@EckhartsLadder 11 ай бұрын
More density levels would also allow for some really massive buildings you’d only see when you had super high population/demand and a built up desirable core. As it exists you’ll never see super talls pop up.

I wish there was just an option to limit what can and can't be built, by type. (Mixed zone possible) Then the game simply fills the voids with whatever is actually needed and makes sense to build in the designated locations. If it's fertile farm-land, then farms build there. If it's near a highway exit, then comercial builds there. If it's far away and cheap, then industrial builds there. If it's real expensive valued land, then only single rich homes build there. If there is lots of "stuff" in one area, then high-density buildings start rising there. I feel like it's too much micromanaging again, where micromanaging doesn't really need to be. 50% of the "user choices" are just wrong, and the game punishes you, without giving reason why it was a bad idea to put a school and high density housing, surrounded by industrial buildings and all your markets spammed on one side of town! Not even a friendly reminder or "notice", that "your markets are too far from industry and residents", or "There is an over-abundance of markets in this area", or "This area is too polluted or noisy for residential zoning". :P

Hi - while I find CS2 to be a big improvement over CS1 in terms of zoning, I agree and had hoped for more. Either being able to designate a maximum density or even a height restriction would add extra control. Also I had REALLY REALLY hoped they would have had some kind of way to work with zoned curves - the game really still caters to a grid-like road layout if you wan't to avoid weird empty spaces.

Beautiful content with a delivery that's both educational and entertaining. That's total win for me, since there's always more to learn about building cities. I tend to run out of steam as I hit the higher densities in CS1 (partly bc I'm just not a city girl, but mostly because I dislike the absence of medium density, even with RICO and extra assets). I don't usually try to build along with content creators, but in this case I think I might. I hope you don't object!

My folks used to live about 45 mins from the west end of Canada's capital (Ottawa). At one point, I took an odd path through some back streets (navigation not great but pressed on) and I found about 30 million-plus-$$$ houses. One had a 5 car garage and the houses looked like 4000 sq ft on acre sized lots. If you stayed on the main roads, you'd never have realized these existed. I understand these little squirreled-away rich subdivisions are popping up anywhere within 20 minutes of the borders of Ottawa. (Being Canada, no security and gates yet like in some places... just the local cops and not being known to most folk). So I think some fairly high end earners will want to have large mansion type buildings in an area tucked away in forests or hills with only a simple road (perhaps even gravel) might not encourage casual sight-seeing. It make sense though - the well off want to be nearer their cottages and to be in place where they can see the sky, have a party without bothering the neighbor an acre or so away, and nobody is going to give them a fuss because everyone that can afford to live in that area have $$$ so want roughly the same things.

Cities Skylines 1 was a model railroad, it was nice to work on a small scale. Cities Skylines 2 is a painting: you have to go broad to grasp the size of it. In the meanwhile: I keep pleading to develop Caldwell as the independent town it is. Also, north of Riverview you have these nice hills, it looks like the perfect place to build some nice gated communities/rich people spots; nice secluded and blissfully disconnected from the real world ^^

Literally. In CS1 it was almost like game development where you would have to design the map and detail every little nook and cranny if you were a city painter and working on making a really hyperdetailed map. CS2 would be even better if it enabled this more by adding more moveit functionality or better tools for placing assets but overall its easier to make a great looking realistic city without spending 4 hours on a single intersection or getting building placement right. You can zone things creatively and have the city pop up really nicely which I find is a nice middle ground!

The subdivision at timeline 16:30 is actually a manufactured home park, finding its roots in the mobile home parks that sprang up in the 1950s and '60s. Common throughout the U.S. Once a "mobile home" is moved into the subdivision, it's put on blocks, the tires are removed, and a "skirt" is added to hide any exposed plumbing, the undercarriage, etc. A wood deck is added to complete the transformation from mobile home to a manufactured home.

I live in a mostly rural, suburban area of the US, our neighborhoods look just like that with the small houses. A lot of the houses here are 1 story manufactured homes with the larger houses mostly being in other neighborhoods around the area. Most of the rural houses here are pretty small.

Riverview keeps reminding me of Seattle, with East Riverview being a good Bellevue! I like the idea of the newly built hamlets in the east being these little rural communities before the road goes up into the mountains, to the ski areas. Maybe you could upgrade one main road that goes from the highway straight into almost the end of the map with some recreational activities at the end. Some parks/sports etc, as a substitute ski area. Only accessible by car, of course. There's a little town in the mountains a two hour drive from Seattle called Leavenworth, which is Bavarian-themed. It makes zero sense, but it could be fun to add as a destination later. It's got a very US layout, but all the buildings are Alpine German-styled. Which you could sort of replicate by only zoning European there :D If you do, Cascadia is my name suggestion as a tribute to the Cascade mountains all of this reminds me of so much. For what currently is Birdsong Corner you could add a tiny bit of low density commercial and make it into the last little village with some shopping and restaurants at a lower altitude before you head up into the mountains. I'd call it Eastmount Village, with the highway going into the mountains being Eastmount Pass. Thanks for your videos! It's really fun to see a take on a North American city like this and as a Belgian who lived in Seattle for two years, to me it feels like you are absolutely nailing it. A lot of what you are doing constantly reminds me of what I saw when I explored the area around Seattle, so much that it's giving me serious nostalgia even though I've only been back in Europe about a year now. Your videos are also very relaxing. I promptly joined your Patreon after this one.

Very nice. I'm mainly a map maker and I have not bought Skylines 2 yet, so I will be very interested to see how map making will compare with Skylines 1. So far the game looks good. Especially for the initial release. It can only get better from here on. Something I am particularly interested in, is the object limits and where they sit at. Also the comparison of playable areas verses the old 81 tile maximum. I will have to investigate all those things myself, when I buy the game and get into it.

Neat channel. City builders like A Train and the first Sim City absolutely influenced my interest in construction and power services. My career in that field ended because of the hazards of doing some of those jobs and now I no longer have to wonder what it's like bidding for contracts and health care for working in hazardous conditions. I had to renovate some very old buildings so I suspect a thousand things for how I got sick doing it. I'd like to make time for this game but I even fell behind on making videos.
