@@garfs5208He’s not. I did this stuff 10 years ago, got caught, did some time and moved on with my life. I wasn’t stealing gift cards from the store to emboss. I had a guy in India create a vector image of a Bank of America debit card, sent that image to a credit card printer in China (they operated under the guise of a “plastic business card printer”), and had 10,000 blank credit cards shipped to me for $800. The embosser was $300 and the magstrip writer was $400. Back then, you could buy dumps (credit card info) for about 60 cents a piece, depending on the market. I could write and emboss 20 credit cards an hour. I made a little bit of money doing it, but it’s a lot of work and fairly risky. It’s even worse now because the fraud algorithms are better, so the transaction is more likely to get flagged, and cameras are much better, so you can’t just drive a few states away and do it with impunity anymore. The real money is in debit card dumps, but that actually hurt people, so I didn’t do it. With debit cards, you could pull all the money out of their bank through an ATM. You do one transaction just before midnight and another right after. You could pull $600-1000 off each card every day. The moral problem with it is that the banks don’t reimburse customers for unauthorized ATM withdrawals, so you were actually stealing money from real people.

I hope you realize cutting up new cards may stop you reading the magnetic strip, but it still has a RFID chip in it, that can be scanned from quite far away.. Theres ways to totally brick them and make them unreadable/unusable though.

I knew someone who did this in a small town not even that close to a city. They'd do an imprint of the card then use random ones to order random things to an unoccupied address, monitor the delivery status and stake out the empty house all day during delivery, pretend to be the person and accept the package. They're not geniuses, they just dont' care about hurting others or taking risks.

@@Captainkakapoo He doesn’t need to take off the magnetic strip. He said he collects numbers and experation dates by looking around, over peoples shoulders, stuff like that. That’s possible, but not easy. Credit cards are better because they usually have no pin. Then he punches one of those numbers he collected on to the blank card with the embossing machine. This is why he looks for old lady cashiers, someone he can sweet talk. So when the swipe fails to go through, he can ask them to just punch in the info. Then it will go through. None of this is new. These scams have been around since the 90’s. They’re just easier now.

@@Johnwiccz Not sure what you mean. Last time I was in states last year 100% of the businesses said they cannot accept chip which exposes consumers to these attacks. A chip requires you to know the pin so rewriting the name on a stolen cc no longer works. Unlike mag stripes, you also cannot reprogram the chip as it requires the data being written to be signed by the bank's secret key. So it does make a huge difference.

No. You need a writer and special software for that. You probably also best get a separate computer so that you don't lose all your photos/important files in case you run into LE and need to destroy evidence quickly. For the price of the software and all the setup, you're looking at like $800 to get started, plus you better be willing to put in at least a couple months of training to learn what is safe(er) vs what is stupid and will get you caught. Fraud is usually prosecuted as a federal crime, so you're royally fucked if you get caught.

Manual entry not happening these days, used to be known as 'tappers' in UK because the card number had to be manually typed into the CC machine by the salesperson when they realised the magnetic strip wasn't working.
