Was on a flight once when I could see the Los Vegas runway straight out my 20 something row window. Thought for sure we were going to crash. Amazing piloting skill. After touchdown applause throughout the plane. Amazing what a good pilot can overcome!!

Bravo to the pilot of the white prop commuter that didn't have the port side landing gear down at about 2:00. Great landing. As for the guy at St. Barths, you're starting to run out of run way and your wheels still aren't on the ground, maybe, I dunno, throttle up and circle back around?

That Q400 one was planned out, LMG wouldn't lock. They made everyone sit on the left side of the aircraft to balance out the weight, as well as avoid injury if the prop exploded, which was a great idea because it ended up blowing a hole in the fuse and chopped up two seat pairs on the right side.

Mostly beautiful landings in less than ideal circumstances. Makes me glad those guys are out there piloting our heavies. True professionals that deserve our respect and every cent of their paygrade. The last one was scary as he seemed to have pretty much got himself committed, but his tracking seemed perfect. He was expecting more falloff than he got I think ... but what a beautiful line : D Inspirational stuff :D

just LOVE the crosswind landings, get's your heart pumping and I bet the pilot, crew and all the passengers too!! I often wonder how that undercarriage can handle the sideways forces on those big planes and the huge degrees of angle they touch down at. Some brilliant pilots. The reason why we all love to fly if your a pilot, but not when it gets so bad that you need to head around for another shot, you have the responsibility of so many lives, not just your own

In January 1991 I flew into Chicago from Arkansas for boot camp during a blizzard. We did touch and goes for so long, it was very scary. When we finally landed you could feel the plane not only yawed but pitched way to the left, nose up, then we just flipped and rolled to the right and slammed down hard. The guy next to me said he flies for a living and had never been through a flight like that. Even the airline personnel were visibly shaken, everyone basically high-fived the pilot while exiting.

oh and no, the momentum does not flip the plane. the pilot puts the plane into a side slip or crab to counter the effects of cross winds on landing. this means that flaps, rudder etc are all set to stabilise the plane at the angle it is flying.

General note to pilots: If you find you're flying sideways as you approach the runway, it's probable a good idea to abort and retry. Remember: Forward=good. Sideways=bad. Backwards=you're fucked.

The shifting of the nose towards a strong wind is a tactic pilots use to counteract the lift that strong winds produce toward one side the aircraft. Basically, if they're nose is off center, then they are probably compensating for strong winds blowing perpendicular to the runway. They are not necessarily bad pilots.

Not all, no. But for the ones that are, that's not an uncommon occurrence. It's called a crosswind landing. If the wind is pushing the plane to one side, then the plane has to turn slightly into that wind to compensate. This way, the plane still goes straight toward the runway, but is travelling slightly diagonally.

While many of these are indeed flight incidents, a few are just dramatic-looking but standard landings in crosswinds. In fact, if you have flown with any frequency, chances are, you probably have been in an aircraft that has approached the runway at an angle due to crosswinds.

it's a landing technique, often called crabbing, that is used when landing a plane in heavy crosswinds. i might add it is a standard technique taught to pilots, is normal and safe, and is not "scary" at all to anyone familiar with it.

Yeah, hopefully. The enthusiasts and museums that maintain these old aircraft do amazing thing though. Have you seen the Dornier they raised from the seafloor, they talk about how they are going to restore it as though all it did was nose over on takeoff, the only recognisable parts are one of the propellers and one of the wheels with it's tire still inflated!

my dad used to fly for british airways, but his drinking really got out of hand. One landing was so bad that its cost the airline a lot of money, as passengers even demanded compensation. He was apparently nursing a horrible hangover when he left las vegas. He was urged to unwillingly retire so as to not taint his flying record and got so depressed that he killed himself 8 months ago by jumping off the roof of our house. I recently learned that my mother might have been having an affair and so..
