I agree with almost everything you say with one exception. I don't think you break the TV to "get back at daddy". I think the TV would be turned on to drown out the noise of his assault, and by destroying the TV you're bringing his misdeeds into the light.

From the tv the little parts and bits you hear through the static it sounds like her father was yelling at her and putting her down. The tv was probably the only thing he treasured.

Also, maybe Thomas was one of those dads who worked all day then dropped himself in front of the TV for the evening after he got home (when not abusing his daughter of course). The TV's are probably one of the things Angela associates with him: the yelling and screaming and the insults/threats while still watching his shows I guess...hence why they're linked into that battle.

And a tiny bit of the dialogue in the tv can be at least some of James own frustrations. The daddy brings up how he takes care of angela. James takes care of Mary. Not saying they're exactly the same person. But I do like that the tv dialogue has just a lil wiggle room so that it means something to James and Angela.

Hearing Thomas speak during this fight was something I didn't expect. It's all pretty unhinged, but when I heard him say "Stop! You're hurting me," that got to me. Hearing that from Angela would make sense, but hearing Thomas say it made it one of the most disgusting things I've heard in my life.

@Torthrodhel
@Torthrodhel Ай бұрын
@@Wabbajock_Dugatti the original helped me through trauma for a similar reason. I had never seen anything like it before (with each of the first three games). Silent Hill felt familiar, like I'd never been represented before, and now here it was. I found a sense of warmth more than being triggered, but my PTSD wasn't really triggered back then much, since I'd suppressed so very much. By now I've remembered enough that it gets triggered more easily. I used to walk around hallucinating fog, when I was young. So you can tell why I connected so immediately. And then in the 2nd game, there were parts of the story dealing with things like that. Then the 3rd game going into a very "fear of sex" element. It all really helped me process things. I connected with Maria the most, I think. Always felt very much like an outsider, not sure what's going on, missing memory and purpose, needing to cling to someone to be sure I'm real. The Angela stuff was too direct at the time I first played it, but it sure hits hard now (in a way I'm prepared for, however). The Eddie stuff not so much, in my case. I think I was a bit too vacant for ordinary bullies to get much satisfaction out of, so they mostly just ignored me. Prime target for dodgy adults who wanted to be sure I wouldn't tell anyone what they did, though. I'll leave it there I think. It really is no wonder I'm such a megafan now. Hope you and your brother are doing okay.

You can also draw parallels of the boss damaging the walls of the corridor as it charges you down as a metaphor for the destructive, dominating nature of SA. It's literally ramming itself down this hallway, structure be damned, chasing its goal single-mindedly. And the drawn out nature of the fight, being just battered and exhausted and waiting for this horror to be over. Yeah, they new what they were doing with this.

The low difficulty of the boss (maybe) represents that James is not fighting his own demons but someone else's, so of course it's easy for him. Also shows how Angela's dad, like all abusers, enjoy abusing the weak but quickly fold against someone who can fight back, in this case another man. Edit: I'm talking about the remake as I found him to be the easiest of all the bosses, having only 1 slow easy to dodge attack, while in the original all the bosses were easy so I don't think that was their intention.

A minor design tweak I noticed they made to Abstract Daddy is, while the original has a sort of phallic protrusion with a mouth on the end of it, the remake has two distinct heads protruding from its form, both not only with mouths, but with mouths that are forced to face each other. @chandlerburse "I know writers who use subtext, and they're all cowards." -Garth Marenghi For the record, none of the rest of the game is subtle in its symbolism. For example most monsters have distinctly feminine legs and asses, including the monster that is nothing but legs and ass. The symbolism of being attacked by a caricature of a woman reduced to the parts most meant for pleasure only comes across as mysterious because most people aren't on the lookout for any sexual subtext on the monsters.

The ‘descent into hell’ sequence was something a friend had used to hype up the game for me before I had played it for the first time as a kid, and I often do the same for new players now, telling them that it’s basically when the game goes from 0 to 100 😂 After the staircase it’s just jumping into hole after hole, until you no longer have any concept of how far you’ve descended. It’s absolutely nuts. As for the Abstract Daddy fight, I’ll forever commend Team Silent for utilizing sexual imagery in a way that isn’t remotely titillating and can’t possibly be construed as such. It’s just pure horror. I imagine that’s a hard thing to pull off (especially when a lot of gamers are…you know, _like that_ lol) and both Silent Hill 2 games do it magnificently.

It reminds me of MGS2 when things start to go nuts after the torture minigame. Honestly there are a lot of weird parallels between SH2 and MGS2. - Game is a PS2 sequel to a PS1 game from Konami. - Later half of both games fall apart into a confusing mess where the player has no clue what is real or not. - The main character has an artificial character that they encounter throughout the story who is supposedly trying to help them come to terms with who they are but this character is very antagonistic at times. - The main character’s lover is inexplicably part of this fantastical scenario even though it makes little sense initially why they would even be here. - Game is less of an overt sequel to the original game and more something else. In this case they’re kind of inverts. MGS2 is a parallel of MGS1 while SH2 is completely disconnected from SH1. Edit: Thought of some more. - The game includes an extra little scenario/mission where you get to play as the secondary main character. In MGS2 it's meant to played first, but in SH2 it's meant to be played after the main game. - At the end of the game the main character has to go across a body of water to get to the final area. - Both games include the main character having suppressed memories of them killing people that they must come to terms with to be their true selves at the end. I know I’ve thought of more parallels between SH2 and MGS2 but I can’t remember them all.

And I’m still so sad that Angela didn’t get an alternate ending in the remake; at least give her peace. Yes, I know she’s supposed to represent those of whom don’t survive their worst traumas, but Angela being a literal child and portrayed as such in the remake, made my heart break for her so much more. Maybe there's a lot more suffering with the other two that doesn't meet the eye...? According to Taoist teachings we're all one in the same consciousness. No one truly gets a free lunch in life, and everyone has their own versions of hell. Just, because someone might seem like they're living a good life doesn't actually mean that they are. It's easy to assume that the other two had it easier than Angela when you're THIRD EYE BLIND and disconnected from your own oneness or Samadhi, but I think in doing so is being foolish. In the original Silent Hill 2, my head cannon as to why the Abstract Daddy was so easy was because it wasn’t Jame’s nightmare, it was Angela’s. And with it, James had no difficulty dispatching it since it had very little to do with him other than being grotesque and in the same room as he and Angela. In the remake however, James has to personally experience Angela’s hellscape, and while he has weapons to fight back, he is still in a situation where he has to run and hide from a bigger, faster and overall much more oppressive force.

What's interesting is the first time I saw the og Abstract Daddy area, I didn't realise the holes in the walls were pistons. I thought they were cameras flashing, taking photos of the 'action'. Which would be very disturbing in a completely different way.

That stairway always reminded me of the Central well of Dante's inferno: the Prison is pretty much the ninth circle in which we can find all kind of sinners, like the 6 hanged men in the courtyard, and at the bottom angela, eddie, james, walter sullivan, angela's dad and eddie's bully. All of em are traitors in some way and killed someone/destroyed someones life. Of em, james seems to be the "strongest" cause he's able to assist angela in her otherworld, killing the abstract daddy before he overcomes her, at the same time hes able tl end eddies journey. Both of these actions could imply that the town gave james some kind of decisional power but deprived him of knowledge, which was granted to angela and eddie instead beacuse their fate is already sealed (their graves are full of dirt) while james' isnt.

The remake improved a lot of the boss battles overall: back in the day you basically stood your ground, shot them a bit, then changed location and repeated. Now bosses have different phases, are far more mobile, and are harder to keep away from unless you use your dodge effectively. And some of them have environmental changes too. The Abstract Daddy's by far the best: you start off in the relatively 'normal' looking house that's meant to represent Angela's old home, which she no doubt sees as a prison and palce of pain and trauma, and the AD is this huge, loud and incredibly angry and violent force that smashes through doors and walls, tears the plaster out of the walls and more: like an abuser that tears through anything in it's way to get to it's victim. In fact I remember seeing a comment on the Silent Hill subreddit where someone said the sounds of the old fans/pistons spinning up sounds like flesh smacking upon flesh. Given what the AD represents...yuck. There's also the fact it's skin texture looks similar to cooked pork/human flesh, which considering Angela's burning Otherworld and the way she views men as digusting pigs, is also fitting.

The whole concept of the Abstract Daddy boss fight is so all encompassing to me. Like the buildup to the presentation, the awful story behind it, all capped off with such an uncanny and unique name "Abstract Daddy". In a game with only a handful of boss fights SH2 does a great job of building up the few bosses that it does have. Back in the PS2 era I only ever played Silent Hill 4, but even before the remake added so much to this boss fight I can see how it contributed to giving this game the status that it did.

One thing I hated about James' reaction to Angela beating "daddy's" corpse was him trying to tell her to calm down. Which to me adds on another layer of how self-centered his character can be.

My best friend and I played SH2 in ~2003 when we were 12 (I had the PS2 and I asked my parents for it and they got it for me). We’d switch over the controller for boss fights etc like we always did with single player games. When we got to Abstract Daddy, it was my friend’s turn. We hardly spoke during it as we both figured out the implications of what we were seeing very quickly. Thankfully neither of us had ever experienced what Angela did- but we knew. We saved after that and didn’t play it for a bit or talk about it. I played the OG on the same PS2 and CRT earlier this year and it was rough. Playing the new version… also rough. It’s the metal pistons in the walls that always get me.

I really wish that it was possible to bring Angela to a better end. It wouldn't make sense for James to be the one to save her, but maybe... idk, maybe Angela encounters a loop of James where he recognizes aspects of himself in the Abstract Daddy and is killed, saying that this is his punishment, but that leads to Angela having her own opportunity for a 'leave' ending.

Angela, Eddie and Laura all experience their own different versions of Silent Hill, so it would be a lot of work for DLC. We get glimpses of their versions, (the morgue/freezers in Eddie's boss fight, the burning staircase with Angela and of course the Daddy boss fight, and I believe the Hotel is how Laura sees it, an idyllic, serene version). I also think Laura's vision of Silent Hill isn't abandoned, but the seemingly normal people are still manifestations that are identical and behave like normal people. Laura clearly isn't in the real Silent Hill as the Lake view Hotel has burned down by the events of the game, yet Laura is wondering around it, oblivious to that fact

What people need to realize is a lot of the added content was content that the original devs wanted to include the first go around but couldn't because of hardware limits and dvd disc space. The cube room puzzle was supposed to be as it is in the remake and so is the Abstract Daddy fight. I've watched vids and interviews with the old crew and they wanted to include stuff similar to what was added to the Remake. (The one thing I could live without is how many portions to the Labyrinth they added felt like some of it could have been a bit smaller but I understand it was intended to be larger anyway) First time I did this fight I was grinning with joy at the intricate the boss was and I was so amped for it. Btw it helps to be a Souls player. I might have played the Silent Hill series first but my time playing Bloodborne and Dark Souls really helped the most.

Another fact that undermined the OG Abstract Daddy is that you continue fighting smaller versions of it later on. That is one reason that a fan can argue for why it was a good idea to replace the miniature abstract daddies with the mandarins hanging from ceilings. Either way, the hotel is giving players one last new enemy, which is an alteration of a previously encountered monster (the abstract daddy if it was smaller and appeared multiple times, or the mandarin when it hangs from a ceiling above versus a grating underneath). And one could argue that this change allows both the abstract daddy and mandarins to be more uniquely utilized monsters.

I love the detail of hearing Abstract Daddy's thunderous footsteps and the house literally coming down around you, because as a small, defenseless child, that's how it would feel. It would feel like the walls are crumbling and the house is shaking. That detail alone made this fight so much more intense and all the more heartbreaking. Small side tangent: It's a genuine surprise to me that Bloober Team handled this game the way they did, seeing as the other games they've made that revolve around mental health weren't very well received. I was so worried that the game would fall flat. I'm sure many people would've been fine with a one to one recreation. In all honesty, I really didn't have high hopes when it was announced that Bloober was at the helm of the remake, but they did such an incredible job across the board. By the time I got to the AD fight it just cemented the fact that the remake had more than done the original justice. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just being a purist, placing more importance on their nostalgia. You can prefer the original to the remake and that's fine, but that doesn't mean that the remake isn't a brilliant showcase on how to faithfully remake a game while keeping everything that made that game as beloved as it is. I don't see why people can't enjoy BOTH rather than pitting them against each other.

To be fair, I can understand the boss in the original being both easy and somewhat anticlimactic for thematic reasons. For one, its James fighting someone else's demon, not his own. But also the fact that Angela's father was, at the end of the day, just an abuser who only had any real power when he tortured someone weaker than himself. Once he, or rather this twisted shadow of him, encountered someone who could actually fight back; he folded like a wet paper towel. However, the remake changing the fight to put James, and by extension the player, in Angela's perspective is *brilliant* The sheer panic and unpredictability of the boss fight gives you just a *small taste* of what it must have been like for a child to grow up in an enviorment like that.

As a victim of SA. I think Changing the quiet original version for the sake of spectacle is a bit tasteless. Real abuse is more similar to the first game. Uncomfortable and unspoken. Nobody is sure of what to do. It is quiet and bleak Nobody sees the abuser as a huge monster, the events are messy and nobody remembers/wants to talk about it. I honestly dislike the remake version. Because it simplifies the abuser as a Slenderman type violent monster. Abuse is, more often than not, not necessarily physically violent. It is way more insidious and harder to detect. Most victims dont know they were victims. Turning the raw, monotone, and vague nature of abuse into a Hollywood slasher is a huge diservice to the story. It is similar to The Sound of Freedom movie. It has good intentions but it portrays a false Hollywood style version of the problem. This can lead more people to assume SA is a black and white easy to spot thing. This is why the original Angela is the better representation. She is difficult to like, problematic and whatever happened to her are muddled by a broken memory, because memories abuse are often fractured. It is vague and confusing, not an obvious monster chasing you down the hall.

Based on what you are writing, it would be better to at least replace the monster fight with fighting the human enemy to better represent the issue.

This remake really succeeded in making me feel so much dread, fear, and anxiety. Even something small like having James sound and look violent when stomping on enemies affected me. It made me wince every single time.

This brings new meaning to Angela throwing the TV at him in the original game. I always wondered why that was there (knowing they didn't put things like that in for no reason)

god, the more i look at the new design of the abstract daddy, the more im disgusted and angry what they did to Angela. It feels really satisfying to kill that thing, knowing that angela did kill both the father and brother in reality, the second time, James killing the embodiment of her father and her kicking the dead abstract daddy and throwing the tv was a releif. But sadly she is still scarred from that bad moment of her childhood, and thinking she deserves to die...

I like the way the machinery is designed, like everything is moving in that repeating motion, unstoppable, clearly representing the sexual abuse in a very crude way. I love it

I love the changes to the daddy fight, but I don't really like the changes made to its visuals. The addition of the second mouth makes it a much less subtle design, and the lack of a forward-facing mouth makes it feel less threatening to me; less like a grotesque canid predator and more like a sculpture on legs. The whole sequence makes the symbolism a lot less understated - which for the most part, I think, is a good thing - but that design is something I really miss from the OG.

My only issue with the way they 'improved' the Abstract Daddy's fight, is that... it's not James' fight, and that's kind of why I was always fine with the fight being seemingly pathetic for James. The Abstract Daddy is Angela's demon, not James'. Also, a lot of times, men who prey on children, especially their own children, aren't really confident enough to stand up to other men who confront them, and are even cowardly about it. Child predators go after children because children are weak, so of course James would be able to destroy the Abstract Daddy easily. I always wished there was a option *not* to kill the Abstract Daddy, instead of rushing in to be the Superman that James always thinks of himself as. If I were to 'improve' the Abstract Daddy fight, I would give the option to have Angela fight him alone, because her defeating her own father in this world, in that form, is, in my opinion, they only way she'll ever really be free of Silent Hill.

I have mostly positive things to say about this remake! I felt that same nostalgic sense of dread when playing that I felt years ago! My husband watched me play and was not really phased by it, but he did say the abstract daddy fight left him feeling disturbed more than anything else in the game.

It supposed to be this way. This "dad" was a threat for a little girl, and only because of her fear and subjective authority of her father. Any grown up man can deal with him easily, especially with a weapon. Real world shows it - mostly PDF's are weak and puny and being abused by other men in prisons. Literally anyone can kick it like a ball. But with kids they are "strong", "powerful", etc., and making their revenge/compensation with the weak for its fullest. Thing is, most likely that's the whole point of what SH wanted from this girl. To realize, how weak this man was, to realize it when she at last will fight back, thus making it end emotionally. This barrier is mental. So at the end, ofc MC is killing it like a dog in seconds, thus also ruining the lesson for her. Notice how she is immediately rushes to kick the daddy corpse, after it got killed. It means the same thing I said - she wanted to, but was afraid of it, the real obstacle was always in her brain. She failed, the same as Jim. She must do it herself. SH doesn't care about human morals - it tries to make you accept, and step over, either to darkness or to light. For those who are failed, there is only death, and eternal suffering, trapped in there forever as a ghost. Well, for those who choose the dark path, there is also Alessa, and hers manipulations, which will kill you too. And I guess for those who are having no problems or get over it, there is also a cult remains (and their god), who will try to kill them too. Silent Hill, a truly fun place to be. This remake is but a zoomers fun. Any SH fan will beat it on hardest in a day or two, while also be having more than 100 healing items in stock. Extremely easy, but yeah, now it's more of a "game". An attraction, even just a movie kinda.
