The first time we went over the Pontcysytile aqueduct in 1991, we had just done our washing and hung it out on the front of the hire boat not realizing that there would be a wind roaring up the valley. Hence, we lost all our washing down into the valley. What made it worse was that we were on our gap year and were travelling with a minimal wardrobe. We lost 80% of our clothes. Looking back, that was a wonderful trip and have since been able to repeat it, minus the washing incident🤪 That is when our love of the canals started and we proudly call ourselves “narrowboat tragics”. I backpacked around Europe for 2 months way way back in my 20s with a very tiny wardrobe! I’m sure you look back now and laugh at the memory! You are right! In the 10 years we lived in Texas we were always on the hunt for the ‘back bacon’ that’s common in the UK. In the last 2 years there, our local HEB grocery store stocked a British style bacon, complete with a Union Jack flag on the packet! It was the closest we got, and fulfilled our need, even though it was a treat as we paid way over the odds for the ‘delicacy’ 😂🥓

Grew up in the estate above Trevor basin in the 60's, used the whole area as a playground and helped turn boats around in the basin for pennies. It is a wonderful experience travelling across the bridge whether by boat or on foot. My grandfather fell in one night while drunk walking between Froncysyllte and Trevor where we lived, luckily its not that deep as he wasn't very tall. When we were teenagers several lads used to walk along the side of it with no footpath, mad as I know now but back then it was just funny. Great video bye the way,

It is very cosy. I’ll try and show more of the inside this coming year as quite a few people like that aspect of the videos. There are Canal and River Trust inspectors that note boat numbers and locations, and issue warnings for overstaying. If you get too many warnings they will limit your license for the next year. They are really good though if you have a genuine situation that requires you to overstay, like when my dad was in hospital and we needs to stay somewhere we could access the car easily. Also when we had Covid they were fine issuing an extension. As long as you let them know then they are usually very understanding 😊

We would like to do it again in a different season. It’s such a beautiful area isn’t it. How busy was it in the summer? We have seen photos of boats queuing to get through the tunnels and across the aqueducts! How was it in reality? 😊

Well, we come from Norway, so we had to take the train from Manchester airport. Suppose we must have gone by bus or taxi to Trevor- details not so sharp in memory anymore. Trevor and Anglo Welsh for the boat hire. Busy place with lots of boats there. I can see on my map that we took the Pontcysyllte Aquaduct towards Chirk the first day. How busy was it…? I cannot remember now, but I suspect we had to take turn in crossing. It does not occupy a great deal of my memory so I suppose it must have been ok and nothing to fuzz about. The aqueduct is really something. One can get dizzy by less. I see that our first night was just by Chirk Marina (p.24 in Pearson’s Canal Companion) so we must have been tired. Next night we spent at Ellesmere. Our 3. Night at Whitchurch, and I cannot see further notes, so I think we must have used the opportunity to turn around there and just retrace our keel water. We went to Llangollen the last day for lunch or dinner and I think we spent our last night there above the town. Oh yes I remember we got on a train ride up the valley in an old steam train. Beautiful valley. I suppose it would have been marvelous to hike up that valley with a fishing rod during the green season. Suppose it will have to wait until my next life. Fantastic experience, and those welsh road signs! A foot long string of just consonants that won’t fit in a normal mouth.

Our son has recently been working as a singer on a cruise ship and visited many times during his contract and now we have the bug after seeing his beautiful photos and hearing his stories 😊

@@onedaymoreaboard The very best part to visit I think is the northern part of the coast during summer with midnight sun. Take the “HurtigRuten” from Trondheim to Tromsoe. A stop at Svolvaer in Lofoten with eagle safari is mandatory. It will be an experience that will stay with you forever.

At least when you crossed Ponythingy the wind was blowing you onto the towpath side, would have been even more scary if it was the other way. Julie and Martin and you two are my favorites… first time writing to them and the first time writing to you… I just want you to know I am sorry about your puppy Jasper… I too have now two new puppies, nine months, old Max and Stella to come along side little sissy bloom, my Chihuahua who is 12 she lost her best friend Prince Harry he was 11 October 31 of 2022. It’s been an adjustment for her having puppies and me I had to say as well. So my heart has gone out to you and hopefully you will catch up from the year behind but everybody like I said knows why with the loss of your father as well. We find your videos both breathtaking and relaxing at the same time. One question for you is regarding the width of the canals especially under bridges and when going across the aquaduct. Winds, currents, and just operator judgement, the boat must rub against the canal sides at times. What if anything protects the sides of the boat from damage ?

I wasn't sure I was going to survive that windy aqueduct crossing. Holy moley! The pups are such troopers. I love the way they take it all in stride and also seem to try to oversee it all cracks me up. I keep thinking eventually I'll be able to tell them apart when they are not wearing their personalized vests. I am also a January baby, Pete...16th. When is yours? It is right what you say about building a feeling of knowing you - since we get to watch you regularly, but it must be a little strange when people say hi to you by name and know about your lives, dogs and boat when you don't know them. Some of us even have crazy muddles alphanumeric symbols as you tube account names simply because of the way your tube works (mine used to be my name but I changed notebook and the account name changed even though the age of the account remains unchanged. It won't let me change it back again either. I had to resubscribe to your and other channels too. Helps your subscription numbers a tiny bit perhaps!) Lovely to put some real names to your user-xw6….. username! We know exactly what you mean about feeling like you know the people you are watching, as that was us just 3 years ago as we were binge watching all of the narrowboat vlogs planning our new life! We now count quite a few of those as our best boat friends which in itself is still quite unbelievable! We will never get used to being recognised I don’t think (our kids this it’s hilarious!) but absolutely love making those real life connections with viewers! In our life before Texas and back to the UK we lived in Singapore for 8 years, and often traveled up to Malaysia across the causeway for dinner in JB! 😊

Just far enough out of the centre to be out of some of the bustle, but we can still see the Petronas Twin Towers from out place. Any plans to revisit this region? I should add that one more thing in common is that for some as a kid years I lived on Ermine Street, about 30 miles north from Lincoln though. I believe that is your home town isn't it?

@@onedaymoreaboard Weather outlook - highs near or above freezing. Lows in the 20's at night. At least for the next 10 day forecast. January is always darn right cold. I would say we might get sub zero temps toward the end of the month. Plus Feb can be also cold. Looking forward to March where the temps 'may' be better. @@onedaymoreaboard Snowed yesterday - we had about 3 inches of snow show up. Been warm so it didn't stay on the roads, driveways or side walks. Glad she made it back safe and sound. I have booked for us to go to Aqueeduct Marina to their boat event on July 13th and get her to go in and look at one. Fingers crossed as I hope she falls in love with the idea of boat life as much as I have I really dont want to get a static caravan by the sea with the same view as waking up to a new view whenever we want with all the same conforts as a static or touring caravan is what i want her to want as much as me x

What are the rules or etiquette for just pulling over for the night? Are there many places with restrictions (I know obviously if you were to hinder traffic). Merry Xmas by the way!

The majority of places are covered for use by our Canal & River Trust annual license, although some require an additional payment, like the Llangollen Basin for example, but then electricity is available and included. Restrictions are in place for how long you are able to stay in the mooring spot, often 48 hours, 7 days or 14 days, depending on the location. There are signs along the towpath that indicate if there are restrictions. In winter, most spaces change to 14 days unless noted otherwise on the sign. There are places we prefer to moor, with Armco (steel edging) or rings in place which provide a more secure place to tie up to rather than use pins hammered into the bank. We pay for an annual license that covers use of the facilities (water, rubbish and toilet emptying points), plus mooring along the canals and rivers 😊

That made us laugh! They emptied the aqueduct this winter to carry out routine inspections and maintenance, so we are confident it will last another few more years yet! I actually felt safer going across in the boat than I did when we walked across it on a visit with family before we had the boat. 😊

The footage is a year old, but it’s a brand new video. Our videos have always been about 6 months behind, as it took us that long to decide to put them out to the public on KZbin. Then I had to take a break from filming and editing while I cared for my Dad, who passed away at the end of August, so I am trying to catch up again. Thanks for watching 😊

Thank you for your concern Carolyn. The bacon baguettes are a now and then treat for us, but we probably seem to eat them far more often on our videos. Avocado on toast with poached eggs is also a firm favourite, especially on non cruising days when we have more time 😊
