3 surgeries (at least), a year of physical therapy, 5 years hard surfing barrels here at home to up my game again, and plane tickets/ money for hotels. Can't surf now cause of a $2000 dollar surgery I need (Mexico is cheap for surgeries) but may as well be 2 million. I can't get that money. I've got 12 bucks to eat on for the rest of this month. I've been watching good empty waves for over a year. Probably gotta sell my boards for rent.

Practicing for Pipe, even when the women do have some heats out there, has got to be the most difficult. I come from an area famous for being impossible to get waves from the crowd/localism. And threat of serious injury or death if you fuck up. Pipe is gnarlier than 99% of my home breaks. My Mav's days were in the early-mid 90's, so even though it's a heavier wave, it wasn't hard to get waves to yourself. Lots of uncrowded days back then. Getting the practice out at Pipe, like Moana becoming a real Pipe local, seems like the only way. Lotta dues paid. Respect.

@@branestormer1 Just from surfing Mavericks and I'd run into him at drop zones (he liked jumping out of planes, too). The first time I ever went out there, we were waiting for the fog to clear. It was big, but so foggy you couldn't see the rocks from the beach. Jay came paddling in, he had been out surfing it alone! He said there was a bubble in the fog out at the peak where you can see the waves. It was morning. I waited till I was able to see the rocks for my first wave. Got pitched, too. When I paddled back out Jay was laughing and said: "Welcome to Mavericks! How was that?" At first I thought: "Am I even good enough to be surfing here?" I made my second wave. Got a lot more in the next couple of years. Miss those times.
