As a 1960's kid we only had black and white tv back then, these Sherlock movies bring me comfort in a nostalgic way. Thank you.

Color tv came out in the early 50s but wasn’t profitable and the sets were horribly expensive. Color tv did not become the norm until the 60s. There WERE some episodes of The Lone Ranger and The Cisco Kid broadcast in color in the 50s but few people had color sets before the 60s. It’s an interesting story and there’s lots of information about the early days of television online. .

Widely considered one of the best - if not the best - of the Basil Rathbone / Nigel Bruce series. The acting is superb, and this is a textbook example of low-budget filmmaking haughtily dismissed as “B-level.” Roy William Neill was a master at this. He had the pleasure of directing the finest Holmes-Watson team.

Dit is bij mijn weten toch nooit afgedaan als B-niveau?

They're all great. But, my personal favorite is The House of Fear.

@@bastiaanstapelberg9018 Many of these films were dismissed by highbrow critics. I’ve always disagreed. These films are excellent!

The fact we are still watching them in 2024 is testimony to the quality of cinematic storytelling involved.

This duo is legendary as Holmes & Watson~always entertaining. My personal favorites are "House of Fear" & "The Hound of the Baskervilles," this has the same vintage look.😊👍

I wish I could have seen William Gillette play Sherlock Holmes. He’s from my home state I live a few minutes away from his castle he was quite eccentric so I would assume he was amazing as holmes. I’m so pleased I get to see this duo though, by far one of my favorite Holmes and Watson duo ever. Jeremy Brett was my first Holmes so he will always be my favorite but basil is a close second.

Rathbone was the most immaculate British actor of all time.

In response to other remarks here -Basil Rathbone’s Sherlock Holmes films were made in the US and shot in Hollywood. The first two produced by 20th Century Fox and 12 more by Universal. And shot in Hollywood studios. They weren’t English films.

Basil Rathbone WAS wonderful - surely the early inspiration for Jeremy Brett’s interpretation of the character. He has said as much. The only irritating thing about these early films is that they made the Watson character a bumbling idiot - which he was not in Doyle’s stories. He was an army medical doctor with experience in Afghanistan as well as an author. It was a sign of the times I suppose - and early filmmakers’ concepts of storytelling and characters. Still great to watch though. Loved Basil Rathbone.
