This is terrifying. I’m already scared of wind turbines, but am obsessed with them, but seeing them from the outside is enough. But being inside it hearing it starting up and all the sounds and everything… holy crap being inside those is one of my worst fears. Irrational fears, that is. Tall ceilings and large spaces or terrifying 😮‍💨

Would this damaged bearing trigger shutdown or any kind of warning/fault?
@saasch_baasch
@saasch_baasch Жыл бұрын
Not on this particular type of Turbine. On almost every newer one it would trigger some kind of alarm like "generator Bearing A excessive vibration" which is been measured by the condition monitoring system. This system is working with acceleration sensors on various spots. Enercon and Siemens DD Turbines are able to detect unusual and loud sounds via various microphones.
@Tore_Lund
@Tore_Lund 2 жыл бұрын
So was this discovered during a routine inspection or are there temperature / vibration sensors on the bearings?
@saasch_baasch
@saasch_baasch 2 жыл бұрын
In this Case it was discovered during an routine Inspection. On newer Turbines there is mostly a condition monitoring system, that measures constantly the Conditions of the critical Bearings with acceleration Sensors.

How much power do turbines consume when idle? Do you know how much does 1 consume per year?
@saasch_baasch
@saasch_baasch 3 жыл бұрын
This depends on the Type of Turbine and is between 1kW, up to ~15kW. In Production the own consumption is higher due to the Converter in operation, but this Energy is directly supplied by the own production. The consumption per Turbine per Year (means the periods there is no wind and the Aux systems of the Turbine have to be feeded by the Grid) depends highly on type and Wind conditions and vary between several 100 kWh up to 20 MWh, or In other Words between a shed and 5 Family houses. This may sound bad, but a Turbine is producing thousands of times the Energy which it consumes a year.

@saasch_baasch
@saasch_baasch 3 жыл бұрын
The Bearing Was about 10 Jears old and did several billion rounds, it's OK for retirement. These can run up to several months with a damage before the mandatory exchange of the Bearing.

@@saasch_baasch With respect, 10yrs isn't that long! Is it a design problem? I have no idea as to how long the bearings last in a 777 engine, but hopefully longer than 10yrs. From my perspective it's the 'perceived' difficulty factor in repairing the gearbox. Can the gearbox be removed /replaced without disturbing the blades?
@saasch_baasch
@saasch_baasch 3 жыл бұрын
I am not working for MTU or Pratt and Whitney, but I am sure that the design requirements and the kind of Bearings used inside a PW4000 Turbine of a 777 is absolutely and totally different. Just imagine what could happen after a failure... Boeing: several hundred People in danger of live... Windturbine: some minor Power less in the Grid... I guess that the Bearings inside a PW4000 are hydrostatic and high performance Bearings, which are absolutely non comparable to the Windturbine "simple" ball Bearings. 10 Jears may sound short, but just do a small calculation: the average RPM of the Bearing is 1000 1/min. * 60 minutes * 24 hours * 365 days * 10 jears.... about 5 billion rounds. Do the same for the tire bearings on your car: around 750 1/min (17" tires and 60 kph average) * 5000 hours (that's 300,000 km at 60kph average) this is just 3,8 million rounds, that's factor of 1400, so this 10 jear old Windturbine is like a car with 420 million kilometers on the dashboard.... of course, the conditions of a car and a Windturbine different, but this is just an example of how much operating hours Windturbines do have after a short period of time. The Change of a generator Bearing can be done by two men, takes about 2 days (varying) and doesn't need a huge crane. Gearboxes may be changed without disassembling the Blades on most Turbines.

Just a point from my side. Bearing in a 777 engine eg are getting changed after shorter period of time, as it’s mandatory for maintenance. A former colleague was working for a big plane turbine producer in Switzerland.

Please keep in mind, that the Tower acts like a huge megaphone, that's why I recorded this there. The Damage is significant, but the Turbine don't have to be stopped, until the exchange of the Bearing some weeks later was done. The Sound right next to the Generator is much less terrifying😉

@@echothefreak9396 I appreciate you passion 😉 I promise that I will do a record only for you the next time I am in an Turbine with an damaged Gearbox, bottom an Top for comparison. But to anticipate the Sound is much less terrifying, cause the huge echo chamber (whole Tower) does strange things to sounds emitted inside. For example if you shout to an colleague just 30 meters away in the Tower, you are barely able to understand just one word, cause everything sounds mixed and pitched down extremely. I do have a nice example of a huge Turbine in full production from the very bottom. You will love it I promise 😉
