Frenkie de Jong is what's missing from this team. He's very underrated by a lot of people, despite playing for Barcelona. People berate him for limited goals or assists, but look deeper and you'll see that he is the glue that makes his teams play better and more confident. He did this at Ajax, he does it at Barcelona and he would have done it for the Netherlands. Another player with a similar impact was Lasse Schöne at Ajax... or Iñesta at Barcelona, or Henderson at Liverpool.

One of the reasons why the Dutch are lacking in famous attackers like we used to, is because A LOT of foreign countries are more and more playing on a counter strategy, or very compact playstyles. Meaning that if you focus on offense, you cause your defense to be much thinner and more vulnerable to counterattacks. It's one of the reasons why we failed to qualify for so many tournaments in the past 20 years: Our traditional playstyle was literally being countered by other, traditionally 'lesser' countries. Which basically forces you to adopt a similar playstyle or at least bring your own twist to it, which requires a LOT of defenders.

With that said, I agree with your assessment that our homegrown defensive talent is noteworthy in recent times. We've been the bridesmaid quite a lot. Tasted victory in a few WC finals and always came up short, but the reason Dutch fans are so loyal is because we're so small in scale geographically yet manage(d) to make so much noise. @@ContagiousSponge Thank you for noticing that fact. As you mention every team has a bad day once in a while. We had that against Austria, wich in itself was a blessing in disguise! We as Dutch are sometimes over confident of our own quality, that the dissapointment is equally strong. Now we had a good win against Rumania and as it seems we are settled at the "weaker"half of the schedule, playing against Turkey in the Quarter final. The current situation is; our defence is good , and our attack is ok...our midfield is not as strong and experienced as our orginal midfield due to injuries. If we are able to keep the team compact, and our defence, midfield and attack can all play equally well, and when the players are feeling free and relaxed in playing pressure with and without ball, then we may get chances to score, but we have to take those chances, that are getting fewer against the strong teams of Spain, France, Portugal, Germany and England!!

It might seem the talent that does comes through is more random, but (as a Ajax supporter I only speak for my own club. The main two reasons why its has become harder to develop some of the best strikers and creative midfielders is combination of legal causes and financial. In The Netherlands players aren't allowed to sign a professional contract before they are 15,5, those restrictions don't apply to other leagues, so we loose a lot that way. But the biggest reason by far is that gifted strikers, wingers and creative offensive midfielders often are plucked out of the academy before they even played one second in the first squad. Again financials, although I hate it, I cant blame these youngster for taking that bag that set up them and their families for life. Not that Ajax pays poverty wages, but financially we cant compete with the Premier League, Bundes League, La Liga & Serie A. For example the highest amount a first team player can get is about 5 million, and that is only reserved for our strong holders. That amount can me matched easily else where. Also where as first squad players in the past left when they were around 24, today even a decent to good half season as an 18 years old can be enough to leave. But this isnt a problem exclusive to Ajax, I' m pretty sure it also applies to Feijenoord and PSV and other "smaller" leagues in Europe. I almost forgot to mention that the "Bosman arrest/ruling" also has been devastating for clubs from smaller countries. But hey we are Ajax and we do our thing, which sooner or later always leads to a good European run we can be proud of. I'm sure there are plenty of clubs out there of the same size who wished they had our heritage, so a lot of us Ajax supporters do cherish those moments when ever we have a "golden' gen again. And the same could be said for the national teams, although those the world cup lost finales are national football trauma. Though if I have to choose between Ajax winning its 5th Champions League or The Netherlands winning the world cup; than I choose Ajax winning her 5th Champions League.

The thing about the Netherlands doing historically poor at penalties tends to be due to the fact that they struggle with stopping penalties. They don't tend to do okay when taking them. However the Netherlands has never had an exceptional keeper, at least not at the same level as some of their strikers of old or current defenders and midfielders, even the current keeper is not known as a world-class talent, although he's been putting in decent work. Still it remains to be seen how he'll do at penalties. Also when it comes to strikers there's one name I would've loved to at least hear mentioned which is Weghorst, although he is not quite at the same level in club football as some other offensive players in the squad he has come up clutch when subbed in late in the game, most notably against Argentina, still he has not quite reached the same level of performance, though his contribution against Poland was key.

Koeman might not be the best coach out there but he HAS WON this tournament as a player (1988) and that could be a key element in this phase. He also has the 2010 WC finalist Nigel De Jong (X. Alonso will remember him well) on his staff. Granted they’re not gonna be on the pitch but knowing that your coaching staff has “ been there and done that” should not be underestimated as an intangible edge. I'm an ajax supporter but you're doing short of PSV and Feyenoord as you did mention ajax as a great supplier for the dutch national team. For reference at this point in time not 1 single ajax player is in the first 11 of the national squad. the likes of Robben, van Nistelrooy, van Persie, Gullit, Depay, Gakpo ( the dutch superstar in this European championship) all came from PSV and Feyenoord then there players like Koeman who started at ajax but didn't like it there and become even a bigger star at PSV. The one time (in 1988), when they finally won a final, it was not because of a huge ajax influence in playstyle or players. The ajax players were there as well as the coach, a formal ajax coach, the playstyle was nothing like ajax. of course they did benefit from the outstanding quality of them especially that from van Basten, so they do deserve credit for it, PSV was the best at the time and also won the EuropaCup 1 (todays Champions League) that same year.

I hate when foreigners think Dutch national success depends on Ajax... Most Dutch footballers come from Rotterdam anyway so.

You forgot Romario and the one who came in at 17 years old at PSV. You've got the Brazilian shirt behind you😂 FYI : Groningen brought Suarez to the Netherlands and produced players lik Robben and the Koeman brothers

Good video but the clickbait title has nothing to do with the contents
@pedtalkssports4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kinds words. Title might be slightly embellishing depending on what you see as “scary” but it’s definitely not clickbait. The truth that was discussed in the video is that the Dutch are still developing great players just all in defence now. The team is also nowhere near as talented as previous squads
