I think what separates One Piece from other mangas is that the big bads of the world are known, their power is felt throughout the world, and if you want to beat them, you have to be an absolute monster yourself. It's not like the next big bad shows up this season, without warning. Oop, new season, new enemy. No, these guys are introduced day 1, everyone already knows who they are, and you have to somehow get up to their level. And every moment is spent climbing that pre-established ladder, and we even now, after some of the strongest people in the verse have been defeated, the main cast isn't even close to reaching the top. Because the danger only gets worse the higher you climb, and the gaps only get wider.

This is a great explanation of why the world building in one piece is so good. One piece is above so many other works because even if fantasy is everywhere (i.e. from the people physical looks to their powers) it feels real to the reader: you know what people in that world know and if you discover something new is because it's new to the majority of the OP world population too. In other mangas a new villain or concept is presented to the readers only when needed yet every character acts as if it's just basic knowledge everyone in their world knows trying to justify its lack of introduction till that point by saying it was knowledge not relevant to our previous level, OP plays differently in that regard.

I was a child when Akira came to the States and Dragon Ball was a show I could find via my Chinese friend's house. Picker up DBZ and everything else via Toonami and Midnight Run in high school. Turned off One Piece due to 4Kidz dub. Found manga and became a fan. Part of why this lasts so long is it is a cash cow. Once One Piece ends the money maker dies. Toei, Viz, Shounen Jump, etc don't want that to come quickly.

Luffy, Zoro, and Jimbei are the only straw hats up to where the manga is who would have been strong enough at the time to fight Krieg. Zoro pre-alabasta is even iffy too, because he only cut steel for the first time in Alabasta, Krieg was completely covered in very strong armor, and had a lot of sneaky attacks, and don't underestimate his fleet. It only looks weak because they had the misfortune of running into one of the strongest characters in the verse so far.

Honestly, I think that One Piece is long because its show you how all characters progress by turns, I mean like in Thriller Bark, almost all episodes in reality are like 5 minutes inside the world of One piece, it just show you how Luffy progress, then Nami, Franky and Sanji, then Chopper, Robin and Usopp progress and repeat, so its repeats the last 5 minutes but every time from a different viewpoint

Mihawk must have gone to the East blue to see what sort of Pirate Shanks would sacrifice his arm for. This is why he challenged Zoro. He wanted to see if The One who Shanks Sacrificed himself for, is able to gather proper crewmates. After his bought with Zoro, as well as watching Luffy beat Krieg, Mihawk realizes that Shanks' sacrifice wasn't in vain, and he was looking forward. It also coincides with Mihawk appearing where Shanks was, showing him Luffy's 30 million berry bounty, which Luffy got After beating Arlong and Don Krieg. It just so happened that the Bounty poster came out, but I have a feeling that Mihawk would have seen Shanks anyways, to tell him of what he experienced. The Bounty was just the "Coverup" that Oda gave us, but Mihawk would have went regardless. It's interesting to think about the chain of events that occurred.

The reason its so long is because its a huge world that is always constantly moving even outside of the mcs the world continues moving. Thats what makes it such a good story. Things happens without the strawhats and without the bad guys.

i dont think zoro will be able to defeat mihawk but there's one thing that zoro can do to become the world greatest swordman, and its not defeating mihawk, its going to be zoro putting a scar on mihawks back

One Piece is a journey guys, just take your time with it, don't need to be up to date with it to truly enjoy it, and no I'm not gonna say "it gets better after X number of episodes", I just gonna say give it a try, let the story guide you
