What basically happened is that Beaver grew up, and was no longer the cute little kid who originally captured the hearts of the audience. I give the producers credit for knowing that it was time, and for avoiding that all too common error of introducing another little kid to the cast in the hope that the continuing "cute factor" would allow the show to stay on longer. So many shows have tried that strategy, and it has failed miserably.

I also prefer to watch an old show in bl/w than have it colourised; nothing messes up film history than having a colour story in a time when you knew colour tv movies didn't exist yet. Exceptions like " The Elephant Man" were ok, because the mood was more important than it going in colour. Barbara Billingsley was funny in "Airplane" as the lady who spoke Jive. Sometime in the early 1970s, a TV station in Boston decided to air Leave It to Beaver every morning and I was able to watch it before I had to leave for work. The show was shown in order so as time went on, you were able to watch the Beaver grow up until the last episode. The next day, the show would start with the very first episode. I have no problem with goodie goodie programs due to my relatuonship with Christ. But it is ok to talk controversial as long as it is not done in an immoral manner and not explicit. Like, there was a faith based movie where the husband committed adultery but they did not show him kissing the woman or half naked or ready to jump in bed, or seductive talk. Another faith based movie, a bad boy got shot out of self defense. Just one shot, but you did not see him get shot, you just heard the gun go off and you saw the bad boy on the ground praying asking for forgiveness of his sins. He was already laying on ground and you did not see the bullet hitting him causing him to drop.

@holyexperience19762 жыл бұрын
Out of fairness, a lot of Prima Donna kids have/had Prima Donna parents. Discipline needs to be back up by parental acting right themselves. Too many adults not act right today so cannot talk about youth acting wrong. It is worse how adults act because adults are to know better unless they have true mental challenges where they cannot know what they are doing ( like Dementia ) Also,because adults are free to choose for themselves where youth do not get to choose for themselves as they are not legally responsible for themselves like adults are and are in learning stage of life depenxing on adults for examples. Anyone who knows Prima Donna kids maybe sometimes helo them out, talk kindly with them instead wanting to just slam them, pray for them. Also, do not forget you were not perfect yourself growing up and as a youth you wish you did not have to answer to any adult. But there are parents who truly try to raise their kids right, but youth are not robots they are human with free will like we have free will. Some youth are not going to stop swearing because getting butt ripped off for a billionth time. Some are not fazed by consequences like many adults do not stop doing something wrong after facing prison time. My parents did not raise me to sleep outside of marriage and have a kid, but I did, at age 27. Not their fault. At some point I deeply worse than regret it. My parents disbelief in that came from Jesus, and my own relationship with Jesus at some point made me feel beyond remorseful.

You might want to hear my story. I grew up watching "Leave it to Beaver". I grew up and became an LA PD Officer. Many years ago while working Venice Beach, I was conducting an investigation aroung 8:00pm next to Venice Blvd. I was busy, getting information regarding my call. Out of the corner of my eye I observed a father and his nine year old son approach. I heard the father tell his son "stand back and do not disturb the Officer". At this moment I looked up and saw Wally all grown up with his son. I immediately went back to my investigation and never looked back. Later on that night while driving home, I thought to myself, "all this time I have been watching leave it to Beaver", and now Wally and his son were watching me. From what I have read the actors in the family and many of the supporting actors were truly decent and good people. The kids were treated well. Hugh Beaumont was a part-time Pastor when he got the role. He wrote a number of the scripts so that they always had a moral in mind. Barbara Billingsley had her own kids in real life and would make suggestions so that she was doing what a real mother would do rather than some of the original dialog in the scripts. Tony Dow later directed a number of the X Factor episodes. Most of the actors were hopelessly typecast. Ken Osmond (Eddie Haskell), when interviewed at old TV show conventions was sometimes told that he was more like Ward Cleaver than Eddie. He agreed and thanked them for the compliment. Jerry Mathers and Tony Dow both said Ken was the most talented actor on the show because he was so different than his character.

Life was never really like that for the majority of American families. Who had a mother that wore high heels and pearls to do housework? Or a father almost always in a suit at home? Come on! I do love this show for its heart though. Just the same, the adults were so stiff, too many stereotypes of men’s roles vs. women’s roles (I know it was the 50’s/60’s…, still….😵💫), and ZERO diversity. (They did have a “Spanish boy” on once from South America, in an episode called “Beaver & Chuey”, who though the creators must have thought was speaking “Spanish”, had an extremely heavy American accent, and used all the wrong words and grammar….Anyway, the ignorance of the creators towards Hispanics was extremely evident here.) Although this was a fun show, it was NOT AT ALL representative of TRUE American families.

In the 1950s, before automatic deposits, cell phones, and EFTs, Friday night's were a different routine than today. Friday was payday for almost everyone who worked. Fathers would come home, wash and change, and round up the family in the car. First stop, the bank to cash the paycheck, and, if you were one of the few families to have a checking account, make the deposit. A small portion went into savings or "Christmas Clubs" that took a dollar a two per week for 50 weeks and dissolved the account just before Christmas. The next stop was the grocery store/supermarket. Then home for supper. The remaining money was apportioned into envelopes: house payment, car payment, utilities, Sears/Aldens/Montgomery Ward payments, insurance, and gas money for the weeks work. If there was leftover money, both parents double checked to make sure no bills were omitted and then a Saturday night drive-In movie would be indulged or extra would be put aside for Christmas. So, moving a tv show to Thursday night was a wise move.

Not much different from the routine in our house when I was a child in the mid 40's to late 50's, except Dad cashed his check before he got home. He cleaned up, we ate supper, and then we went grocery shopping, Mom, Dad and us 3 kids. No body was left at home to fool around. After grocery shopping, we would stop at the Eagles Club, where we kids sat at a table in a corner, and the folks had a couple glasses of beer, costing 7 to 10 cents each. Us kids got a bottle of Orange Crush to share and a candy bar each. That was our big treat each week! On Saturday morning, Dad and my brother and I would watch the cartoons together, while my sister did whatever Mom was doing. Sunday morning, everybody went to church as a family. Even when my brother and I lived at home as young adults before marriage, Dad said that if we went out on Saturday night, we better be in church on Sunday morning, or be packing our bags when they got home from church. No ands, ifs or buts! They are all gone now - I miss those happy times.

Beaver was a sweet, innocent when he was little. He was trailing after the older boys, but not always accepted. He got into trouble out of innocence. When he got older this made him look dumb. You'd think that with all of the trouble that Beaver's friends got him into that his parents would have him associate with better kids. There was an episode in the first Season where the Clever boys became friends with the sons of the Junk man. This was a rare episode that display prejudice on the part of June, who didn't want them associating with the sons of a Junk Man. That was a rare, subtle comment on social prejudice issues minus the racial aspect. There was another episode where June selfishly made the boys stay home and miss a Carnival they were planning to attend because her Aunt Martha was coming to visit. There were other episodes where mistakes made by both parents were featured, and the parents learned about their mistakes through the boys. So there was learning and resolution on both levels in these episodes.

Hard to believe that there actually was an era like the one depicted on this show. But, I lived it so I know it's true. In those days, 1950's, responsible adults ruled the society. I was taught manners from an early age and expected to behave appropriately. There was consistent consequences for misbehavior as well as reward for doing the best to my ability and playing to win not just "get by". I learned the value of hard work and how to "earn" a reward. I could trust authority figures such as teachers and police officers. Not to say everything was better then, because it wasn't but it would be nice to live in a world with that much trust and civility again.

Nice that you had such a good experience. Not everyone did. Children were still abused and molested, alcoholism was common behind closed doors, black Americans were treated horribly under Jim Crow laws, anyone who was “different” or expressed their individuality was shunned.

I was born in the late 1950s, and discovered "Leave it to Beaver" in reruns in the late 1960s. Ward reminded me of my own father, wise and soft spoken. The quiet suburban neighborhood, it was all very idyllic and safe. What a different world we live in today. I would get into the same sort of trouble Beaver would, like not coming straight home after school in the first grade one day because I wanted to watch the street pavers re-pave the street next to my school, or detouring through a nearby creek and getting my shoes wet on the walk home, (and being scolded for it by Mom), that sort of thing.. All very sweet and innocent. I miss that era.

Those of you who remember this show and loved it are very blessed. Life was better back then...less complicated. More respect for authority. Our lives become more complicated as we grow up. My dad always said that men are nothing but little boys. The only difference is that their toys are more expensive. We are all children at heart....needing a home, food, parents who care and a great neighborhood being either local or widespread. We have squandered our youth if we haven't learned from it. It was once said that youth was wasted on the young. How true. LITB brought me back to my childhood and made me think of how my life was very similar...and different...from what Beaver and Wally went through. I am glad to have witnessed those years!!!

The plot involved the boys mailing away for a baby alligator and hiding it from their parents in the toilet tank. They were allowed to show only the tank portion but definitely not the bowl!
