This week in the first installment of our fantastic conversation with DK Ulrich, DK talks about how AJ Foyt influenced him to not only be known by his initials, but also to pursue a career in racing. He then remembers a chance offer for a 1957 Chevy that altered the course of his life and his earliest days as one of NASCAR’s independents.
And make no mistake about it … those independents were NOT just stroking around the race track to collect an easy paycheck. There was NOTHING easy about … and if being an independent meant boosting parts from Holman-Moody and traveling all over the United States without ever once going home … then so be it.
There may also be talk of a prank played on future NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin.

Great stories. Without guys like DK, NASCAR would of ran fields of 12- 15 cars....and probably would of eventually failed. The independents we're a vital part of NASCAR. DK and the likes were some very very smart and clever men. Not to mention brave.

Mark Martin and Dick Trickle had a story about Mark saying " Lighter is better." Trickle said Mark was using a grinder on the engine block and probably only removed 5 ounces. But Martin was determined to remove weight anywhere possible. One of my favorite Trickle stories :P

I’m from Wisconsin, saw Mark and Dick race 100’s of times , First time I saw Mark race was at Rockford when he was 18 , First time he came to Slinger , was epic , his crew chief Banjo Grim was spotting, he climbed on top of the caution lights coming into turn 3 to have a great view of the track , Dick was just amazing, ALWAYS last car to leave the pits after the races 🍻

D.K. was the very first NASCAR driver autograph obtained in person in 1978. That collection has now grown to over 100, but there will always be only one "first".

Man, I love the interviews ! These pampered Racers of today have no understanding of what it's like to earn a spot in racing ,right now Nascar and other racing forms are grooming some kid for a sport .it's a crying shame.

Jack,Jose, Johnny Walker, and a pocket rocket.. The crew members of most teams though out the ages.. Ps people are still blowing head in Baker Ca. & The $100.oo gasket fix is still in play @A-1 amongst most lonely travelers on lost desert highways .. And i do agree.. the SOUND is an issue I know we want to see from the camera unobstructed but capturing the audio is top priority in these Historical recordings documenting our heroes of day's gone bye...

YOu need to run your audio thru a mixer and adjust the levels to the sound of tone. On Shure mixers there is a switch that produces tone for you to adjust audio levels right below the red line. You show is painful to the ears please fix

A lot of people, myself included, point their fingers at today's woke NASCAR and talk about how corrupt they are... and then Rick and Steve remind us with interviews like this that the sport we (used to) love has always been dirty and selfish... seems like a lot of these old racers got the short end of the stick more often then not while people like Richard Petty were allowed to openly cheat and win all the races... Sorry if this hurts your feelings but it's true....
