You will learn about the science of deduction and 7 of the best techniques Sherlock Holmes uses personally in his strategy to make deductions. Deductive reasoning is a skill that requires many hours of practice to perform without cognitive thinking, so don't give up upon your first few tries. The first tip is to observe their demeanor, and this is especially important because you can rule out ideas if you know a person's general habits. The second tip is to use the process of elimination by the data you have gathered from the initial observations. After watching this video, you will understand the importance of visualizing and verbalizing as well, which are supremely important upon cultivating your deduction skills and methods. Any good detective and mentalist know these 7 great tips and will follow them daily, and eventually they become second nature habits that are automatically followed subconsciously. Deduction is the art of reasoning backwards, determining a cause from an observable effect. In doing this however, there are a lot of variables that come into play, and many times we have to establish something basic to determine something more complex. This video is referring to both the BBC Sherlock Holmes played by Benedict Cumberbatch as well as the movies in which Robert Downey Jr. played.
I hope you guys enjoy this new style, which is specifically for auditory learners and to put on as background music while performing a secondary task to increase the value of the task with learning.

The process of elimination is actually useful even though I'm not good in deducing. My mom taught me that when I'm having a hard time answering a multiple choice test at school I can use the process of elimination. Somehow it works!

Yep Indeed although when I was in school I wasn't that good at process of elimination yet I have really great deduction skills. But it also helps to watch shows and movies that help you subconsciously deduct certain situations.

These are not deduction skills. They are called the skills of ABDUCTION. They are commonly mistaken for each other because of the Sherlock Holmes books.

I just want to inform everyone that the style that this video is in is entirely my fault. I was the one who wrote the script for this video, and I have a tendency to write longer scripts, as a result, PP wasn't able to put together a normal style video; seeing as though the videos that he makes are typically much shorter there is no need to worry that this style will become the norm for his channel. Now, for those of you can't sit through a 12 minute long video that has minimal visuals, because you need something constantly moving to keep your attention, you obviously aren't interested in the topic enough as you aren't willing to put just a little bit of effort into learning about it when you are pushed outside your comfort zone. In which case my channel isn't the place for you, because while I put a lot of work to make my videos good and entertaining, all the concepts I teach take hard work and dedication to perfect. That being said, I know that most of you commenting about the editing style are doing so simply to give helpful feed back, all the same I know that there are others who are simply complaining, I just wanted to clarify some things.

@TheArtofDeduction_Official
@TheArtofDeduction_Official 7 жыл бұрын
Or perhaps it has to do with the fact that I've been very busy lately and haven't had the opportunity to give his comment a well thought out answer that it deserves. While I find it somewhat ironic that a person with the username Sherlock Holmes is accusing other people of pretending to be smart I don't intend to bicker and point fingers. I'm not here to put myself above other people, nor do I think that I am above taking advice or admitting when I am wrong, that is why I prefer to think through what I say before I say it. Never have I said that my abilities are on par with Holmes' and in fact I make a point of telling people that I am still learning a lot, perhaps not in this video specifically but I do admit that fact. Obviously you have some personal problem with me, if you do have such an issue provide a basis for your premise. In this case your premise is that I am a fraud and pretend to be smart. By not giving any substantial evidence to support such a claim you are shifting the burden of proof, rather than proving your claim you are placing the burden upon me to disprove the claim, such is a logical fallacy otherwise referred to as Ad Ignorantiam.
@TheArtofDeduction_Official
@TheArtofDeduction_Official 7 жыл бұрын
I appreciate what you are saying Shirish, however allow me to explain what I have come to find. you are correct, coming upon a conclusion with certainty when 'reading' people is nigh impossible, but this is not so much due to the reasoning that is being used so much as a lack of data. A conclusion gathered using deductive reasoning MUST be true, if the PREMISE is also true. Now in ideal conditions one can determine a definitive conclusion, however the problem with what I do, especially when applied to people is that a perfect conclusion is not guaranteed because a perfect premise is not guaranteed. When dealing with people especially, who are complex and sometimes illogical creatures, there are a multitude of variables that need to be determined to form a complete premise, and this is not always possible. Inductive reasoning takes specific instances and forms generalized conclusions from that, deductive reasoning starts with a premise and through applying that to a specific instance is able to draw a conclusion. Now when dealing with a person that I don't know I don't have any specific premises about them in particular, I have certain premises that I have stored before that could apply to them but aren't specific to them. Because of this I have to determine premises on the spot, I do this through inductive reasoning, that is why I talked so much about narrowing down the possible conjectures in the video. With inductive reasoning I am attempting to establish certain premises but when I have I then use deductive reasoning to come to my final conclusion. This is why results using this method are not guaranteed to be correct because of the incompleteness of the premise. So while I use both inductive and deductive reasoning I call the process deduction because my final conclusion is drawn through deductive reasoning. Either way thanks for the comment, I had more of a conceptual knowledge of the terms I chose before, but answering you made me sit down and determine these things in a more concrete way.

Hey :) Thanks so much for that shoutout! Also, even though the video style was more stripped down than usual. Looking at it from a content creator's point of view, I know it had to have been a relief to make it in this style. That being said, the original style that you usually make videos in is more visually stimulating and more popular! As for the video content, even though there weren't visual animations to help the words come to life, all the points were very solid. I know that The Art of Deduction puts in his hours of study to get this stuff right, so anyone watching the video is going to learn quality stuff. Thank you both for the video. I liked it a lot!

I was always good at memorization and remembering things I was told in school, but I never really thought of myself as a free thinker because of that. I have a tough time making my own conclusions. I think it’s partly because I lack self confidence sometimes and am afraid to sound dumb. I’m trying to get better at that but it’s hard. Often times when a teacher would ask a question and no one would answer, I’d have an idea in my head but not say anything for fear of being wrong. I’ve gotta work on that and this video helps by giving me strategies to feel more confident in myself to make my own conclusions. Well done

Just adding upon the 5th rule -- By utilising multiple methods of practising deduction as well. It is essential in mastering the multiple modes of deductive reasoning found in certain cases. For instance, while your collection of senses attribute to deciphering information are useful, they are also quite weak. So if you can learn to break down your five senses into empirically tested methods of improving upon them, then it should help to marginally increase your deduction skills by aggregation.

For the first one you could also infer from the introverted and sleep deprived demeanor that they are depressed or an insomniac and if you knew how well they were doing in school from how the teacher treats them or if they show signs of confusion or bad memory that they have several mental health issues and those (with more knowledge on mental health diseases) could help on deciding if or why that person could have committed a crime

Would an imaginary friend or an item do the job as well as another person? Usually people do not enjoy being the 'idiot' friend who helps stimulate your genius. Besides you cannot depend on them to find out the logical errors in your deductions or the paths you haven't followed. Even Sherlock used a 'pet skull' to talk to before John, albeit admittedly in the show John in fact makes deductions of his own, even though slower than Sherlock.
@TheArtofDeduction_Official
@TheArtofDeduction_Official 7 жыл бұрын
absolutely, I've talked to my dog about my deductions before and it works pretty much the same. The principle of the idea is to state your deductions out loud, this is a form of self evaluation, as it forces you to form your deductions into a flowing chronological coherent train of thought in the form of intelligible sentences. The benefit of having a friend is that they can help check your logic, as they might see some inconsistencies that you didn't simply because they are thinking along a different vein. Now we aren't all geniuses like Sherlock, and in reality that level of mental abilities that he possesses, is slightly fantastical, and not entirely feasible so there is no need to act like Sherlock and make everyone else feel like an idiot, just be polite and not demeaning and I don't see why a friend would not be willing to hear you out, although I'm not exactly an expert on having friends so I could be wrong on that one.
@NPCrash
@NPCrash 7 жыл бұрын
If someone is making deductions simply to irritate people because they believe that way they'd be more similar to Sherlock, they aren't focusing on extracting information from their sensory findings making the whole endeavor pointless. Yet sometimes one may accidentally get out of line by reaching a conclusion that insults the others, so I wondered whether a more silent approach is preferable. I understand that this way one would have to come back later to those thoughts to 'proofread' them, thus losing time. Anyway, thank you for your reply.

Nick Crash Right you are, there is a certain level of tact that should go with presenting a deduction, it is all relative to the situation really. Many times if I have a friend with me at the time I confide privately with them about my deductions about a person, and don't actually go up to the person and ask them if I'm right, and when I'm alone I just keep it to myself, maybe utter my deductions under my breath to myself; really it all depends on what you are deducing and whom you are deducing this about, so personal discretion is required.

Regarding seventh point, verbalize, Dr. House does this a lot with his team. About this video format, you could images to represent the ideas you are talking about, so we don't stare at the voice equalizer all the time and helps us to understand. It's a video, not an podcast. Still I liked it a lot =)

Bags under the eyes doesn't only mean lack of sleep. It can also, in my case, mean a bad diet. I sleep a lot but due to my poor eating habits I have rings under my eyes. Another thing is stress. For example, my grandmother suffers with terrible anxiety and has a condition that causes her to fall asleep at random times. Even though she sleeps a lot, the stress she is under causes dark circles under her eyes aswell.

I purposefully convince people that my dominant hand is my left. however I am trained ambidextrous. but if I am forced to think with reflex my right most often takes control. it is my way of determining who is most analytical and therefore, more dangerous to my plans.

Could you make a video on how to evaluate another persons personality? IMHO the most relevant aspect would be, if someone has compassion and if his demonstrated personality is genuine. This is something most people fail and get used and back-stabbed by false friends. I noticed that many don't notice a lack of compassion by someone who's faking it, but jump at those that are lacking emotional intelligence as if they were the real problem. I'd be glad, if I could use it to determine personality types, however, I wouldn't even be able to use the 16-personality model on people I know reasonably well. While I'm quite good at logical problems, my observation skills are lacking especially when it comes to things related to emotions. Peculiarly, that's usually where my intuition shows up: if I think that something is off, it is usually a warning, even though I can hardly put a finger on it (yet).

body language can help you deduce some stuff about a person there's a video(not sure if it's from this channel) that teaches you some good stuff about body language. the name is"how to read anyone instantly". so after you watch the video you just need to read them and watch how they act around different people thus coming up with a result.

I try to look at something you can notice about someone just by looking at them. For example: the other day, I knew someone hadn't really brushed his teeth in a while because of how yellow or dirty they were. Another example is the way people walk. If you saw me walk, you would notice that one of my legs is only noticeably longer than the other when I walk, because when I walk it's almost like a limp.

Dude, I really appreciate what you are doing in this channel. But what makes this channel unique is the way of teaching. Dont be physics teacher that writes down all info about "fricton" to board. Be the awesome one that shows everyone "friction concept" with woods and a toy car. Images, Images, Images. Thats how we learn

Also, on the watch. I wear my watch on my dominant wrist because there is damage to the nerves of my dominant wrist which means I can not reliably operate a watch with my dominant hand due to reduced tactile perception. This could be verified by noticing the scar near the wrist crease. The reason I bring this up is with RSI becoming more common I would be curious if there would be more people wearing their watch on the dominant hand as in RSI it is common for reduced tactile perception. Just a thought.
