The Science of Gunas: An Ancient Wisdom That Can Transform Your Life

The word Guna in Sanskrit means quality or attribute when seen in a literal sense. In a general
understanding of the term, Guna may refer to the fundamental characteristic that defines an
entity. Guna is the fluidity of water, the hotness of fire, the whiteness of milk, and the sweetness
of honey. It is the personality or attitude of a person that defines their personhood. A person may
be kind, aggressive, punctual, lethargic, truthful, or have many other traits that are said to be
qualities of that person. Hence the concept of gunas as an attribute of a thing entails that it is
dependent on the object and defines its essence. As they describe reality, they form the
fundamental building blocks of the universe, the material world, and the human personality. The
Gunas determining the different aspects of life, creation, relationships, and knowledge have been
well explored in ancient philosophical texts. Broadly, they can be seen in the cosmic aspect, as a
part of personality, in the societal aspect, and from a rational-scientific point of view.

Gunas as constituents of Prakriti, the creative force
All things in the cosmos exist in duality: the masculine and feminine, the yin and the yang, the
mind and the body. The Samkhya school of Indian philosophy visualises this duality in the form
of Purusha and Prakriti. Purusha represents the conscious but passive aspect of reality, whereas
Prakriti represents the unconscious but creative aspect. It is the power that gives birth to
everything. Gunas are the constituents of this Prakriti.
They can be classified into three types: Sattva , Raja, and Tama. Tha Sattva Guna is goodness,
bliss, and enlightenment. It is buoyant, bright, and illuminating . The Raja guna is the principle
of motion and energy. It is restlessness, desire, activity, effort, and pain. Tama Guna consists of
darkness, apathy, ,indifference, ignorance, and lethargy. It is the quality of heaviness, negativity,
confusion, and passivity. In Prakriti, all three gunas are present in harmonious balance. When
Prakriti, the feminine, comes into contact with Purusha, the masculine, the equilibrium of the
Gunas within Prakriti is disturbed. The Raja Guna begins to dominate, compelling other gunas to
engage in activity as well.As a result, material products start evolving out of Prakriti, and
creation occurs. Each product of creation contains all three gunas (sata, raja, and tama), although
in different proportions, resulting in the diversity of the phenomenal world. The plants, animals,
elements of nature, and even human beings show a diversity in characteristics corresponding to
different combinations of the three gunas. Every phenomenon contains a predominant guna, as
well as a smaller dose of the other two gunas. That is why, for instance, anger can be transformed
into compassion because the rajas state of anger contains some sattva, the predominant guna of
compassion. Besides the cosmic explanation given by Samkhyan philosophy, Gunas have a
practical use. They can be said to influence our daily lives through personal development,
understanding relationships and psychology, cultivating habits, and managing our desires. The
Bhagavad Gita explains the types of personalities due to the Gunas and how one should manage
them.

'Traigunya Bishaya Veda Nistraigunya Bhabarjuna ' All the realised mundane knowledge based on these 3 gunas .. but One has to attain a state of Nistraigunya ( beyond any gun ) ... It's the core philosophy of Indian Vedant philosophy.

According to the Sāṁkhya-kārikā, Sattva is described as “illuminating”, giving rise to pleasure; Rajas is “activating”, giving rise to pain; and Tamas is “restraining”, which gives rise to delusion. Collectively, these three guṇas represent the entire spectrum of experience. According to Caraka-Saṃhitā, the word “Sattva” is synonymous with the mind. Derived from the root words sat (eternal truth) and tva (thyself), Sattva represents the subjective consciousness, which is only experienced in fullness through deep meditation, when the mind is turned inward and away from the compulsions of rāga (desire) and dviṣa (aversion). This is why Sattva is said to give pleasure - not the temporal pleasure that fulfills desire - but rather, the bliss that comes from deep spiritual insight (saccidānanda). In contrast, Tamas represents the objective, physical world, which includes our bodies, the food we eat, the earth itself, and all the stars in the universe. In Āyurveda this includes the five elements, and the three doṣa(s) that emanate from them. Between them lies Rajas as the “activator”, the guna that binds Sattva to Tamas, drawing the illuminated consciousness outwards into the inertia of physical reality. This is the esoteric concept of the illuminated consciousness according to the teaching of Sāṁkhya.

I would say people in developed highly educated countries in west and east have lesser tamo guna on an average compared to muslim countries and less developed asian countries like in south asia.Highest tamo gunik people live in muslim majority countries,south asian and african countries.Crime rate is higher,both intellectual and awareness quotience is lower,superstitions are higher in these countries.Primitive tribals/soceities across the earth can also be considered as tamo gunik predominantly.Western/european countries,east asian countries like japan,korea have more rajasik guna dominant kind of people.

*An example how Satvik, Rajas, tamas works in humans.* A teacher has 4 students A B C D. Teacher always favours A for some reason. (They're all of same age). B C D notices that as well and A is oblivious to this. They all came together to learn something very important and they have to spend 7 years in Gurukula. First they were put into work and not eduction. They had to keep gurukula promises clean, bringing water, helping the cook and do things as this teacher and other elders say. Watch other kids learn education. In 2nd year Guru took A and started teaching him things, in 3rd year B started his education finally and after few month C and D also began studies finally. Now. A B C D came in together, were given equal manual works and but they were taken in for actual studies at different times. Now, in intellect A is More than an average, B is intelligent. C and D are also not bad or Even sharper than A and B. How they behaved: B doesn't minds, he is happy that He finally got to learn and focusing on studies. He is learning fast but also properly. He does notices everything but it doesnt affects him at all. C Notices, he feels jelous that A and Then B got in first dispite getting in together and C is even sharper than B. He always notices teacher somehow favouring A and he always feels jelous but he doesnt shows to anyone. He thinks its unfair. D Feels upset that dispite being more intelligent he was taken in last with C, He thinks he's not being noticed. Its absolutely unfair. He's extremely jealous of A and even for B. He often openly says "it's unfair" with C because he feels anger for loosing 2.5 years. C agrees but he doesn't do anything. D tries to win over teacher by putting down A, B and even C. He tries to sabotage other students to win first place, He focuses on negative aspects more and it makes him mad that guru visibly favours A. He may even tell that to A in secret and try to makes him guilty over it. He thinks he deserves great treatment from guru and appreciate his intelligence. Instead trying to win by honest means he focus of sabotaging other students. Uses his intelligence to harm others. Now. A is somehow got in first because he is intelligent according to C and D. Truth is All 4 were treated same during 1st year. Only A was fully focused on manual work and was 100% obedient and followed every guidelines and orders to the T. Even though he was average, he was satvik, he never questioned any orders given to him. He never lagged. He never consider any work as small but did every single thing with dedications even though he came for education and ended up doing work of a service. (This person will be unbiased, uses his power properly n wisely if he's in charge, nothing is big n nothing is menial for him. Followed guru's orders without asking a question because he knew guru was telling things for some reason n he didn't needed to know, that unbearable trust he had on guru that without reason Guru wouldn't tell him to do anything. He was there to learn, not to judge or question. He just did that😅) B somewhat did samd but he wondered why guru was asking to do useless things so he lagged and wasted time and dint so what he was told but he understood after A got in but it took him more time to reach that point of obidiance and utmost bhakti over GuRu, then he got in. And C and D were too much into studies but they weren't Following what a GuRu was telling them, they dodged manual works becuae they thought it was beneath them and they came to studies and not to work like a manual worker. so they got in later. After observing all 4 only this action was taken. Now, B is also satvik, dispute 2 year wasted he saw his mistake and corrected and only focused on happiness he got from finally starting the education. He dint focused on missed 2 years. C Is Rajasik, he felt jealousy and upset but kept that to himself and he dint cause any harm to anyone. He was annoyed to the core. He supported D Indirectly which fueled D to do some bad things. D was overly upset he expressed it openly, tried to sabotage A infront of His guru to make him look like loser Nd failed. Its Taamasa. Jelous and he tri to harm just to win. He thinks he is better in every way. A was taught more even though he was average student, B was bit less taught dispite being sharp. C and D were only taught basic things becuae they might use that knowledge in hurting others becuae of thier Raajasa and Taamasa peraonality. First 1 year was a test of personalities. Because these people can create a soceity more beautiful or create chaotic.. 😅😅😅 Especially if you are learning Politics, war technics, medicine, healing, any education. Ps: Guru was not biased, he was wise. Until you surrender completely a guru won't teach you, because EGO must go before learning anything according to Hinduism. At most trust n respect the 100% guru is also important. If someone who's cup is full, you'll learn less because your cup is already full. Surrender means emptying our cup, A immediately did that, B did later. C n D never did. 😅

4:52 Ok so what's with all the globe drops? I'm no expert but I'm quite sure that I've heard it mentioned more than a few times in my life that the Vedas and Upanishads describe level planes of worlds. Maybe layers of energy / reality like in a world tree or being carried on an elephant or turtle or both, anyway it seems like many videos about spiritual concepts rely too heavily on the CGI images put forth by the "authority" figures we have now in the bottom of the fourth quarter Cali yuga. Even Sadghuru has to say global and planet during his meetings with other celebrities of the spiritual practices. That sucks cause I really liked Sadghuru. He is a wise and shrewd man. Bhagvad Gita 18.42 - 'Tranquility, restraint, austerity, purity, patience, integrity, knowledge, wisdom, and belief in a hereafter-these are the intrinsic qualities of work for Brahmins.' COMMENTARY on Gita 18.42 👇 Those who possessed predominantly sāttvic natures were the Brahmins. Their primary duties were to undertake austerities, practice purity of mind, do devotion, and inspire others by their examples. Thus, they were expected to be tolerant, humble, and spiritually minded. They were expected to perform Vedic rituals for themselves and for the other classes. Their nature inclined them toward a love for knowledge. So, the profession of teaching-cultivating knowledge and sharing it with others-was also suitable for them. Although they did not participate in the government administration themselves, they guided the executives. And because they possessed wisdom of the scriptures, their views on social and political matters were greatly valued.

Bhagvad Gita 4.13 - 'The four categories of occupations were created by Me according to people’s qualities and activities. Although I am the Creator of this system, know Me to be the Non-doer and Eternal.' COMMENTARY on Gita 4.13 👇 The Vedas classify people into four categories of occupations, not according to their birth, but according to their natures. Such varieties of occupations exist in every society. Even in communist nations where equality is the overriding principle, the diversity in human beings cannot be smothered. There are the philosophers who are the communist party think-tanks, there are the military men who protect the country, there are the farmers who engage in agriculture, and there are the factory workers. The Vedic philosophy explains this variety in a more scientific manner. It states that the material energy is constituted of three guṇas (modes): sattva guṇa (mode of goodness), rajo guṇa (mode of passion), and tamo guṇa (mode of ignorance). The Brahmins are those who have a preponderance of the mode of goodness. They are predisposed toward teaching and worship. The Kshatriyas are those who have a preponderance of the mode of passion mixed with a smaller amount of the mode of goodness. They are inclined toward administration and management. The Vaishyas are those who possess the mode of passion mixed with some mode of ignorance. Accordingly, they form the business and agricultural class. Then there are the Shudras, who are predominated by the mode of ignorance. They form the working class. This classification was neither meant to be according to birth, nor was it unchangeable. Shree Krishna explains in this verse that the classification of the Varṇāśhram system was according to people’s qualities and activities. Although God is the creator of the scheme of the world, yet he is the non-doer. This is similar to the rain. Just as rain water falls equally on the forest, yet from some seeds huge banyan trees sprout, from other seeds beautiful flowers bloom, and from some thorny bushes emerge. The rain, which is impartial, is not answerable for this difference. In the same way, God provides the souls with the energy to act, but they are free in determining what they wish to do with it; God is not responsible for their actions.
