Muscle tone is a goal many people have, but few people address the actual science behind what makes it possible.
Many promise muscle tone through diet or exercise, but the actual science points out that no specific diet or workout routine can directly cause muscle tone.

This is not what muscle tone actually is. This is just body fat and hypertrophy. Muscle tone is a measurement of the percentage of active musle fibers in a rested (uncontacted) state. You can create muscle tone without any change at all in body composition by creating a weighted stretch on musle. This is how physical therapy deals with people who are hypotonic.

Yes, that is the technical definition of what muscle tone is, you're right. However, I've never met anyone who's referring to that when they tell me they want to "tone up"

RedDeltaProject Thank you for the response, I don't want to take up too much of your time but it would be much appreciated if you could refer me to a resource that could detail how to increase musle tone. Everything I seem to come across is in reference to tone as it's is know colloquially. Honestly it's quite frustrating. Thank you for the help.

I don't mean to be rude, but this is not what muscle tone is. Muscle tone is a muscle's resistance to stretching, not the ratio between muscle and fat. Resistance is mediated by stretch-receptors. If you are going to be talking about physiology, it will be less confusing to the audience if you keep the jargon the same.

Hello Matt could you do a video on the difference between strength and muscle growth(size)? I get the feeling that they are not necessarily dependant on each other. thanks

You say you can't be toned without having focused on fat and muscle. I agree with this but from your experience, do you have to focus on both fat and muscle simoultanously? I have heard people talk about "bulking season" and "toning season," where you focus on muscle primarily for a season, and then focus on losing fat for a season. Thanks!

You can certainly focus on each separately for sure. The main point was to recognize that just fat loss or building muscle probably won't be enough, you'll need to be both bigger and leaner.

I know your views on diet Matt, but have you or any of your clients/friends had success on intermittent fasting or the warrior diet?

+Nimbus Cloud Awesome! Thank you for the reply. I am currently fasting everyday until after my workouts around 1pm. However, lately I find that I am not hungry around that time anymore and I eat for fear of loosing strength/muscle... I am going to try and trust my bodies instincts to eat when I please and what I like. Ironically, I actually generally prefer vegan foods myself. Also thank you for "chiming in", I am grateful to hear any and all views. If you're interested in how it goes for me I update my progress every month with videos. God bless!

I haven't run across anyone personally but I will often skip some normal eating to offset some over indulgences.

Muscle definition from hypertrophy of muscle , growing larger, taking up space, due to resistance training is healthy. Muscle definition from high rep "toning" exercises, due to the increase in the number of sarcomeres (muscle cell) remaining in constant contraction. Subconscious flexing. Too much toning= hypertonic - not healthy. Control of definition requires hypertrophy. Do you even lift? High reps are for the heart & lungs. Keep doing that too. I like the word definition much better. I know I said muscle cell, not fibers for "tone". All cells in a fiber fire together. Tone is actually the number of fibers per bundle of fibers remaining in constant contraction. How posture is maintained.

My conditioning teacher told the class yoga tones muscles. In my mind, I was screaming that it was a lie. I just let it go because she's in charge of my grade. She is a cutie but nowhere near toned and she does a lot of yoga. I thought that if her own experience hasn't shown her that her statement was false then I would be barking up the wrong tree. Good vid, people need to hear this.

Edward Jones yoga can definitely "tone" muscle. it's a form of muscle stress, it's creates time under tension for the muscles. it's just an alternative method

Tone is NOT shape! You start with a false premise. It's not the scientific definition, which anyone who is curious can easily look up. The whole muscle:fat ratio is completely unrelated to a muscle's neurological tone. YOu can use words to express whatever you want, but scientific terms have specific meanings, and you just completely ignored the accepted definition.
