Saying that racism is entirely a social construct is missing something very psychological that IS biological, but still very much not good. Most humans are predisposed to generalize and stereotype, it's how our brains evolved, and definitely not just in the last couple of centuries. For a long time it was a survival mechanism that we seemed to inherit from our primate ancestors, but it really hasnt served a purpose for a long time. Now we just rationalize our distrust of outsiders by making up generalizations, blaming them for our problems and misfortune, using visual cues to judge before we even know a person. I agree that a lot more can be done in society to minimize this effect, but saying it's all a construct is lying to ourselves.
@Pleaseunderstand9 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. People inherently fear the unknown, and will do whatever they can to make sense of it. If something unexpectedly goes wrong, it's real easy to blame something new and unknown.

skykid being afraid or hating something different is a trait of evolution. just like the study where people were asked to say which of these pictures has the most beautiful woman in it, and the result was always the picture that was made from averages of them all. we find symmetrical things beautiful. we find things we see everyday as such. and racial purity is a result of that. we shun people who are genetically inferior. but our brains are not that good at detecting genetically inferior. instead humans think different equals genetically inferior, partly because most mutations are negative, and shunning those negative mutations is good for the whole. not saying its right not saying its fair, but it is reality and how the human brain works. how its fixed is not dismissing those differences, but rather making the differences apparent, and making the differences known as something not negative and nothing to be afraid of.

Differences are shared with different kinds of people and therefore humans cannot be subdivided into different races. The point of this video is not that differences do not exist but that these differences come in gradients and are shared irregularly all across the globe (note that she talked about clines). And the scientific consensus about race is that it does not exists and if the scientific consensus about race is that it does not exist then it may be better to agree with it.

Those of you trying to defend being racist missed the point of what she was saying. She clearly said that there more genetic diversity between different areas of Africa rather than between different skin tones. Using basic analysis you can figure out that a white European is can possibly have more in common genetically with a black man than two distant tribes in Africa have with each other. That's why her saying race doesn't matter makes sense, because there is more diversity among people in Africa that share similar skin tones than there is among others. Our skin isn't the most productive factor in genetic diversity. Stop making it about who's superior when the whole point of the video was to debunk that.

Race is what it is. A black guy has certain things common with other black guys, one of them is the genes that define their skin color. That's what race is about. Just because there is more genetic commonality between an European and an African than there is between two Africans doesn't mean race is unreal or doesn't matter. Race was naturally created through evolution to make the humans living in a certain environment adapt to their environment. Its called Darwin's evolution theory. Ya the same theory leftists hate as it states a truth that is politically incorrect. If race didn't matter all humans would have had the same skin color. It's common sense and you don't need a scientist to explain that.
@Psychocatalyst8 жыл бұрын
As a Biochemist, I have to disagree. Not that we should treat any one different but there's fairly overwhelming evidence that populations tend to cluster in various ways. All of the people claiming that race doesn't exist then must claim that 'clades' do. This is simply equivocation though. It's real, and pretending that reality doesn't exist does not get us anywhere.
@angrysocialjusticewarrior7 жыл бұрын

@RihannaIsIluminati6 жыл бұрын
What is race? There is no single genetic cluster that defines race. There are arbitrary numbers of genetic clusters based on the trait being analyzed that give different groupings when compared to each other.
@theespatier44566 жыл бұрын
Psychocatalyst That’s not true, not that a biochemist would really know that anyway. “Clustering” that you mention is a method that creates as many clusters as you ask for. K=100 gives 100 “races”. Of course, you mean grouping and not clustering specifically, but the fact remains that there are no discrete biological groups of people.
@wildernesswasted55296 жыл бұрын
Psychocatalyst im just sitting here trying to figure out how you thought stating that you are a biochemist would give you any merit. When nothing in this video had to do with biochemistry besides maybe the short mention of genetic variation. Please explain your reasoning on a biochemical level
@tothemax96965 жыл бұрын
The Espatier that’s totally incorrect, to begin with there’s no proof all humans came from one place to begin with, so absolute physical and mental equality has no real assumption basis. Secondly, there is different physical characteristics between races other than skin colour. There is way different skull, skeleton, and hair structures. Different blood type, facial characteristics, bone and muscle density etc i could go on and on. And you talk about lack of resources when places like Africa have the most resources yet has the country with the lowest standing IQ at 58. If all countries that consisted of a Nigroid majority were put into one category they would all be below 75 in IQ, regardless of the massive charity and foreign support provided. Equality is a myth, even James Watson a Nobel Prize winner agrees that IQ between the races is most certainly a thing. Whether you like it or not
@spawktalk9 жыл бұрын
The idea that race has nothing to do with biology is not tenable. A competent researcher can look at someone's genome, or skeleton, and predict their race with a high degree of accuracy. The fact that everyone's genome is 99.9% the same doesn't change the fact that there are large differences. That .1% amounts to, on average, 3 million base pair differences between a pair of individuals. A difference of a single base pair can cause a significant difference. For instance, the genetic disease sickle cell anemia is caused by a mutation in a single base pair. The video mentions subspecies but fails to tell the audience that human races are more genetically distant from each-other than many subspecies among other animals are. I think that is a pretty important fact to bring up when discussing the reality of race. The discussion of race differences in disease rate is also lacking because it ignores the fact that some of these differences have clear genetic bases. For instance, because of a high frequency of a specific gene variant African Americans have more sensitive androgen receptors than other Americans and this is part, though not all, of why they have high rates of prostate cancer. To give a second example, there was recently a study that found that two gene variants known to put people at risk for diabetes are more common among the Mexican population than among the American population. The discussion of clines is also problematic. A Cline refers to a situation in which a trait changes very gradually and as a function of geographical distance. Skin color, which changes very gradually as populations move away from the equator, is a common example of this. But not all human genetic variation is clinal. There are sharp discontinuities in how gene frequencies changes across populations. This is why if you compare three populations that are all equally distance from each-other in terms of geography the two that are within the same race will be more similar genetically. Racial categories are artifacts of culture in the sense that they are categories that humans invent. But they are categories that group people based on real biological differences and are no less valid than any other category used in biology, all of which were invented by humans.
@alleif9 жыл бұрын
spawktalk Very well said. The video has an ideological motive (teaching children "race doesn't exist" when it's a complex and controversial subject, as soon as they can read?) and so it has a misleading bias that is not at all based around an objective scientific basis.

Who cares if one race is a smidge more resilient against a disease, or is a few inches shorter, or has a minor change in hormone levels? Is racism really a zero sum game for you? According to Natalia, race has zero biological basis. Therefore, discrimination based on observable biological characteristics such as skin color cannot be classified as "racial" discrimination or "racism." So let's expunge those outmoded terms from our vocabulary. Natalia opened with a reference to "racialized violence." To say of something that it is "racialized" is to exclude and rule out the possibility of biological motivations. Some types of violence are motivated by skin color. But since races are purely cultural constructions, "racialized violence" literally means violence that has nothing to do with skin color. When violence between culturally constructed blacks and culturally constructed whites occurs, whites are the victims 85% of the time. Therefore, if Natalia is an egalitarian who advocates equal outcomes, she should re-direct her Civil Rights advocacy toward eliminating anti-white prejudices among blacks and encouraging more positive portrayals of whites in textbooks, in news coverage, and in popular culture.

Race realism isn't just about skin. Every race is different in their own way; we've all evolved and mutated apart from each other for hundreds of thousands of years in hundreds of different environments. Don't you think this would produce some physical and mental changes? The fact that every race is different should be an obvious fact. Not only is the skin different, but the brain, genetic structure, skeletal structure, craniums, intelligence and behavior all differ from race to race. On the topic of intelligence and behavior, some people may argue that it is nurture, not nature that is responsible for these differences. This is quite obviously untrue; for if you were to apply the slightest bit of rational thought and logic, you would come to the conclusion that myself and many others have. Variables such as family income, nutrition, education, culture, society and a myriad of other factors have been attributed to the difference in intelligence and behavior. But no amount of tinkering with those factors has come up with a solid reason for the differences previously mentioned; the data is incomplete. We have not looked at the most glaring factor, that which makes us who we are; our genetics.Why would genetics not be an influence?! Simply by attributing it to genetics you are labeled and insane racist and all logic is thrown out the window.The fact that we have rejected to use logic and rationality, and instead resorted to childish emotional responses is worrying. So which is worse? The people accepting reality and our differences? Or the ones staunchly denying it, simply screaming out insults and buzzwords in a sad attempt to hide themselves from the harsh reality?

Secondly, there is different physical characteristics between races other than skin colour. There is way different skull, skeleton, and hair structures. Different blood type, facial characteristics, bone and muscle density etc i could go on and on. And you talk about lack of resources when places like Africa have the most resources yet has the country with the lowest standing IQ at 58. If all countries that consisted of a Nigroid majority were put into one category they would all be below 75 in IQ, regardless of the massive charity and foreign support provided. The cause of racism is the same as the reason why humans are social animals. Just as various ape families with their inner hierarchy systems fight other tribal ape families for territory and resources, this "us versus them" mentality is also embedded in the genes of humans. So your definition of "us" will form depending on what you perceive in your environment while growing up. If you perceive genetic features of humans you are not used to seeing, among your "us tribe", the initial reaction of the primitive part of your brain will view them as "the others" who do not belong to your "tribe". Of course this behavior is based on genetics and primitive impulses do not have to determine your reasoning unchallenged, as we are self aware creatures who can critically observe and question our instinctive reactions in order to suppress and change them with some effort. How successfully we manage to do so, depends on how self aware we are on those primitive instincts. The first step being to accept the existence of this primitive remnant within us.

There are people more similar to those of another “race” than their own “race”. What groups and people we define as a part of the one race or another race is a social construct because of intermixing and genetic diversity within human populations. For instance, Sub-Saharan African populations are very if not the most genetically diverse yet we tend to lump them all into one single group. I think it is more about being detached from nature when it really started. When human packs started to form humans began to see other groups as a threat or challenge. Since humans had to compensate for a pack and learning to work together to survive against other animals we don't see that at all in this time period. We fight each other kind of like the example given seeing others as a threat or challenge. Most animals fight for food, territory, or procreation. Humans are not different. We still are animals. Being detached from nature means we are more detached from each other. But as time progresses In a few millennium if we get that far the world would be more mixed.

race is only based on biology. we are not all the same on the inside. thats why we're able to identify sex, race, age, weight and even diet, from the bones of people who died decades or even millennia ago.

@roystokes84354 жыл бұрын
The amount of ignorance in this comment section is impressive, you don't understand what she is saying because you are not a biologist, most people here don't understand evolution and what "race" is. You can find groups of people that look white (white skin, blond hair, blue eyes) that share more genes with people that look African (black skin, curly hair, brown eyes) than other whites. This was discovered thanks to the human genome project. Therefore we know for a fact that the concept of "race" does not apply to humans. Skin color or skull shape are not indicative of race, genes are and there's no genetic or scientific basis for the concept of "race".

"It is time that we start teaching our kids as soon as they can talk (and adults, for that matter) that there is no biological basis for racial classification" (0:20) Stopped watching and unsubbed immediately. Anyone who has passed a highschool-level biology or history class knows exactly why it is that this one simple line discredits everything else that is said in the entire video and discredits the entire channel as a medium of delivery of factual, science-based knowledge. Frankly, I'm disturbed that so many people have clicked the like button. It absolutely boggles my mind.

+Patrick Elliott you mean a few different allelles or something?
@PatrickElliottPizzanui8 жыл бұрын
Austin Pinheiro A few different alleles? That's one hell of an understatement. I'm talking about massive differences in the genetic code that can determine everything from skin color to bone structure to susceptibility to almost every single gene-linked disease such as heart Disease, Sickle Cell Anemia, most cancers, and Celiac Disease. I'm talking about very specific segments of the human genome that are vastly different between the different races that can be traced back to early humanity's relative isolation between groups, which would have led to complete speciation had our eventual technological and intellectual advancement and later genetic recombination and redistribution not cut that natural process short. But yes, I suppose you could call it "a few different alleles", it would just be a horrendously massive understatement.
@AustinPinheiro_uniquetexthere8 жыл бұрын
Patrick Elliott i heard another guy referance a study where they comapred people of different ethnicities and people of same ethnicities the result was that people of differance are more alike then people in the same ethinicity so what ever your saying is weakening by the minuet ALSO. massive differances, the humans have around a 95% likeness to their nearest spicies cousin, your telling me a massive differance of 5%? massive differance is an overstatement and a few thousand years of isolation would do little to speciate the human race your also starting to sound more like an ablest at this point
@PatrickElliottPizzanui8 жыл бұрын
Austin Pinheiro Let me deconstruct your argument point-by-point. Just be glad I'm not criticizing your horrendous spelling. 1) That study has been debunked over and over and over again. Nobody with any medical background treats it as anything more than an urban myth, which is exactly what it is. 2) Yes, humans are 98% genetically identical to the most similar living species (chimpanzees), and further all humans share almost 100% of their DNA. You want a cookie? Of course all this is true. But it may also interest you to know that mammals are similar genetically, and in fact humans are 92% genetically identical to mice, yet humans don't really look much like mice now do we? Further, we're 44% identical to fruit flies, 26% identical to yeast, and 18% identical to the weed Thale Cress. To answer your question, yes, I am saying that a tiny percent of your genetic code can make that big of a difference. Some very major genetic diseases in humans are the result of a single base pair change out of literally billions of base pairs in the human genome. So while 0.00001% difference may not look like much to the average joe, it's a massive difference in terms of genetics. 3) A few thousand years? Buddy, try 40,000 years. Do you know how many new species can be created in 40 thousand years? Honestly, it's a wonder that humans didn't speciate completely, as we almost certainly would have if we had not been so intelligent and made contact with other geographically isolated civilizations. 4) Ignoring your use of the wrong "your", explain to me exactly how I am sounding like an ableist? Ableism has nothing to do with what we are talking about in the slightest. Further, the concept of "ableism" is inherently idiotic, as your definition of "ableism" would have it that the process of evolution by natural selection is "ableist". You disgust me. TL;DR - Ding dong your opinion is wrong.

I'm black, I'm also not a libertarian and believe the pursuit for knowledge particularly in science, shouldn't be hindered by any taboo (and that's in direct contradiction with what most woefully ignorant libertarians believe by the way). The IQ correlation between races, whilst it isn't something to be ignored, it isn't something to blindly use as an excuse to justify scientific racism and racial superiority either. It's a correlation at the end of the day, rarely anyone is indifferent about this subject; by that I mean, a lot of people will be biased towards their race; if you're told you're superior to some other people with a seemingly logical explanation, why wouldn't you agree? Racists will ignore any other equally valid hypothesis explaining why Western Europeans are so successful compared to Africans, Aborigines and some Asians. They wont look at historical facts, they wont consider that just lucky circumstances, cultural differences, different mindsets i.e. some communities actively sought out to conquer, kill, pillage, rob and colonise. Whilst others simply wanted to exist with what they had. They will ignore the links found between IQ and famine, education through several generations, unequal distribution of resources or anything like this, despite, as I'm now repeating, it being completely feasible. I don't like touching on this subject because any argument you give that isn't in favour of racial superiority, people claim you're ignorant or just a liberal, which is extremely fucking ironic, considering the statement itself is ignorant of facts. Having said that though, I, being a scientist, still want to get to the bottom of it. And suppose it turns out it's true, what does that change about me? It will mean some dumb white kid sitting on the shoulders of his forefathers, reaping from the rewards of others' strife can claim he's "superior" despite not actually doing anything that contributes to society. Who is really the lesser being there? If you have to fall back onto a general correlation to feed your ego, that's profoundly pathetic. Biologically, being part of a race is an insignificant aspect of you as a person and will always be, despite what people think. FYI, race itself is in no way arbitrary, however, the way we categorise it definitely is. You could say there are 3 main races, then you could subdivide it more, and even more until you get to each individual person. Also, they're right about no single person being pure, you could take a DNA test and have a percentage breakdown and see how much of your ancestry is from a certain race. I'll happily entertain the possibility that there is a causation between race and intelligence, but really, from a neutral perspective I'm not convinced. Rarely any evidence for either side is unbiased and nothing is conclusive yet.
@ELECTRICEYEMEDIA3 жыл бұрын
No such thing as racism, it's a neologism. The correct word to use would be 'condemnatory' The word prejudice doesn't apply either. Why? If they were prejudicial they would have to first 'PRE-JUDGE' someone or a race. That means that they would have not had any prior experience in their reality with the object or thing whom they are basing assumptions on without any knowledge or personal and an empirical experience. However, we have all at one point or another had experiences with members of other races so, finding an actual prejudicial person is far and few between these days. As well, there are no racists as defined by the Webster's Dictionary. Even the most hubris of people or a group who share similar arrogance in their mindset, whether silently or publicly will acknowledge another person or group who has some characteristics that are superior to theirs. We are all NOT created equal and that is just a fact. This however, is not why some people, groups or races share feelings of contempt for another race or it's members. It goes much deeper than that. All these people being called racists are not racists. They are more than likely very condemnatory. Why? Why would someone just hate another person for no reason whatsoever? It's illogical to believe this. People whom have BECOME condemnatory to another race of people are most likely people whom have had objectionable experiences with members of that specific race and generally on more than one occasion. It's wired into our DNA to survive so, if we as a human have been repeatedly threatened, attacked or have had to endure objectionable experiences by someone or a group of people, we tend to naturally avoid those people or groups in the future. Anger turns to resentment, turns to condemnatory and eventually leads to harsh discrimination. This is how people become avoidant and eventually obstinate to even give other members of that race who may not be threatening a chance after their very real experiences ruined it for them.

Race: A group or population of humans categorized on the basis of various sets of heritable characteristics (such as color of skin, eyes, and hair). Is it just me or does this completely disprove the whole argument of "There is no such thing as race"?
@ThePowerfulPanda9 жыл бұрын
PENDANTturnips No, it doesn't. She was saying it's a social construct, and that definition is a social construct. Those are merely superficial differences and count for a very very small amount of genetic diversity. Most of us in the world are descendants of one African tribe. The name escapes me, but there is a tribe in Africa where people have those features you normally you wouldn't find within black people, like straight hair, blue eyes, etc.
@PENDANTturnips9 жыл бұрын
ThePowerfulPanda How do you classify those difference? Obviously you have to have some name for it? Obviously even though a Black person and a white person share a lot of DNA, they still have strong physical differences.
@joses18819 жыл бұрын
PENDANTturnips It's just you. People who say race is a social construct have thought through this. You obviously have not. For groups to be categorized into different races, do they have to differ in all the traits you listed, or just some? How much of a difference is required for the categorization to apply and why? Which traits are more important than others and why? Why are Asians a different race than Europeans? Why aren't the Japanese a different race than the Chinese?
@PENDANTturnips9 жыл бұрын
Jose S Well when you look at dogs, cats, frogs, etc. you are able to classify them. How come humans cant be classified? Obviously just by looking at the thumbnail of this picture there is enough genetic variation, at least physically, to put them into different sub species/races/whatever. For example, take a Chinese guy, a Swedish guy, and a Guy from Congo and compare their physical differences. Obviously they will differ by a lot. Doesn't this warrant some sort of classification?
@joses18819 жыл бұрын
PENDANTturnips Classifying things can be useful, and we humans like doing that. So yes, of course you can propose a racial classification along those lines, but let's not pretend nature dictates those and only those are the racial categories that exist. You can always keep classifying and subclassifying things as long as there's diversity. I think it's useful and enlightening to understand this is all basically arbitrary, though. In short, diversity in nature is real. Our classifications of that diversity are constructed.

Humans will definitely react, maybe even overreact, to people of different ethnicity if they are different from what's normally seen. More precisely, we react that way to almost anything that's unusual or abnormal. Why? Because when we were evolving to what we are today, most abnormalities probably had a high chance of threatening our survival. Unfortunately, this trait causes us to react in certain ways that aren't in our best interests anymore. I remember the story my Grandmother told me about when she first saw a man of African descent. She was only about 5 years old or so and had only seen people of European decent. As soon as she saw that man she screamed out something along the lines of "Mommy! Mommy! Look! It's a man made of chocolate!!!" Although she didn't react badly, it was still quite an overreaction. It's a good thing she didn't try to take a bite out of him.

It depends on where you live. There are certain things like mineset, stereotypes, environment, etc. That affects how a person see and engaged with others. There really is no way to fix it for sure since it's been there for a long time. It became ingrained in to their minds like a sickness. It's a role they take on themselves because they don't understand the bigger picture or know better but chose to follow down that sad path made for us growing up. With the right environment, support system, or self realization they can become better. It all trickles down from something, that what truly makes people so misguided and call out saying that the system is rigged. By some extent yes, but no one wants to educate and open their children's eyes until it's too late.
