This is fascinating and enlightening. I was raised on the equator where the sun rose at 7am and set at 7pm around the year. It wasn’t until I moved to the States/Northern Hemisphere that sleep (and seasonal disorder) became an issue for me.

Neuroscience, specifically sleep, is something I’ve become engrossed in this past year so when I saw this interview I (without being too cliche I hope) “never clicked so fast”. 😅

Because of social schedules, many people with late chronotype suffer from disruption to their circadian rhythm. So it’d better for them to change to morning chronotype. And I’m one of them. I’d appreciate if Ali can make a video on how reset your late chronotype to the morning one.

My husband is a firefighter. He's on a 24hr schedule, so he is often up throughout the night for hours at a time. He has 48 hours off after shift but feels sleep deprived. What suggestions do you have to improve his sleep and overall health.

1:05:55 I find this advice strange. I've experimented a lot with sleep over the years, and I think it's MUCH better to not have an alarm in the morning at all. Instead, have a bedtime alarm set so early that if you go to bed when your bedtime alarm rings in the evening you are sure you'll wake up before you must in the morning.

Interesting talk. I have non 24 hr sighted circadian rhythm disorder. I’ve had it since I was a teenager. I’m now 47. It’s wrecked my working life. My sleep naturally gets later every day and I’ve not found a way to stabilise it. I tend to go full circle about every 19 days. I use melatonin but it doesn’t work that well. If I force sleep before my body clock is ready my sleep will be very light until it’s time when my body naturally wants to sleep then I’ll sleep deeply. When I let my body decide when I sleep I sleep very well very restorative for 8 hours but if I force a schedule it just doesn’t work and I end up making myself unwell. When I worked full time it wasn’t unusual to go to work without any sleep! I’ve tried everything professionals suggest nothing works. I suspect it comes from having a condition called mcas.

this is exactly what I'm like: and towards the end of the week I'm exhausted from lack of sleep. Even if I try really hard to go to bed early I'm not ready. But it may be the brain having anxiety, thinking I just need to read this, I just need to see this...and then things will be ok. One thing that's been a circuit breaker is to use melatonin precursors.Or a circuit breaker is polaramiine which is for hay fever but is mildly soporific. Also I avoid alcohol and definitely caffeine in any form. I also find it helpful to have powdered calcium and magnesium supplments before bed. They are better absorbed at night anyway it's best to take iron and b complex in the mornings. The compatibility of food and absorption is a related very interesting area. There's so little studied about food and nutrition for our bodies at the cellular level.

Nice content, but some of the things said vary a lot to me specifically. Blue light (like monitor or cellphone, led light) is my personal nightmare, and I just recently found out because of these filter glasses, also darkness is essencial for me to sleep, and seeing sunlight is way more effective to wake up than coffee. What adjusted my sleep better than ever was being more calm during the day and sleeping with no curtais whatsoever, so the daylight shines straight in my face.

Blue light blocking glasses work, it has a calming effect, less stimulating. Also sleeping apps help with making lifestyle adjustments such as food, exercises, light exposure etc...

Heavy meals with carbs at night help me fall asleep and remain asleep throughout the night. If I eat too early, I'll keep waking up at night.

Great Video thanks to both of you, I never get any extra Coatings for my Glasses to filter out any Lights as I believe has the Lord created Natural Lights for Natural Eyes in the best manner. I also have been using the old School Manual Alarm Clock with a silent sweeping second hand to avoid the ticking. Thanks again and keep up the great work :-)

circadian rhythms control all bodily functions. wake before dawn, drink water, morning walk, eat dinner at 5 pm, walk at sunset, turn off electronics at 8 pm, sleep at 10 pm.
