My favorite cryptic is Bigfoot because as someone living in the pacific northwest of the US, there is Bigfoot merch EVERYWHERE, yes, but mostly I like Bigfoot because my mom despises how much the creature has taken over this area of the world with merch, tourism, and everything else. So, naturally as her child, I have to taunt her with it lmao

My favorite cryptid is mothman. As someone who lives in the state of west Virginia it's always fun to see people from other places talking about hunting mothman :)

@Luke: the thing you're describing at around 29:30 is an electric eel, which belongs to the order of Gymnotiformes und thus actually is more related to a catfish than to "other" (true) eels (order: Anguilliformes) - hence the similarity :) most "true eels" are smaller and really do look a lot more snakey/slimy. However: There are some _enormous_ eels out there (I assume the 6-foot-eels Corry described were of the species whose DNA was found, because there are bigger ones documented) The European conger is a real heavy weight with 5-7 feet and more than 70 Kg. The Slender giant moray is a different kind of eel that's not as heavy, but they are HUGE. The biggest _actually cought_ example was almost 13 feet long. You wouldn't find that one in freshwater though :'D Edit Conger: britishseafishing.co.uk/conger/ Moray: www.fishbase.de/summary/Strophidon-sathete.html And as for the relationship between Eel, Electric Eel and Catfish: I posted a picture in the Discord-group xD

The "Loch Ness Clickbait", had the reversed effect on me. I almost didn't watch this episode because "that's just silly", but it was actually interesting.

My favourite cryptid is either the ningen or the kraken, but the sirenhead one freaks me out sometimes, and the rake, even though I know they probably don't exist

When I was younger my family went to Loch Ness and everyone else was swimming around having fun but I refused to go into the water because I was scared that Nessie would come and kill me and that my blood would dye the water red…I was a weird kid 😑😑😑😑😑

As always I liked your talk a lot. The middle part of it (about the purpose of education etc) had little to do with the topic of the video but was actually even more important.

45:21 mythology, like religion, aims to explain the unknown; come up with a reason WHY rather than the reason HOW that science can offer. It gives people routines and stories that they can follow for a sense of purpose in their existence.

Saint David is the Patron Saint of Wales. And Saint George, the Patron Saint of England, supposedly slew a dragon, which seems a more extravagant thing to claim than Saint Columba driving out the Loch Ness Monster.

Sasquatch is a great cryptid. No I'm not just saying that because a kid at the beach asked their parents if I was a sasquatch after I took my top off...

Hi! I don’t mean to be a harsh critic or anything but just to clarify, Plesiosaurs was actually not a dinosaur, it was a sauropterygian (I think I spelled that right) that lived during the early Jurassic period. This is probably obvious, but humans didn’t exist in the Jurassic period, so no spotting of Nessie could have actually been a Plesiosaur. Love this podcast by the way!

The Greenland shark is actually a better candidate than most. Its not the plesiosaur most people want but its a much more plausible explanation.

when you google the 6ft eel and most of the photos relate to stories of 6ft ones being caught or found dead on the coast of devon.... and you live in devon literally a few miles from each of the eel finding sites - fun :)

Only comment is about DNA degrading quickly (10:06:00ish) - I work with dna a lot in the lab and it’s actually pretty stable (especially when stored as dsDNA or circularised). It can last decades in a -20! Every centuries in a -80 (which most labs have loads of). So I guess if you committed to it big time it wouldn’t be that hard to have a physical library with the DNA stored. I like to think you’d get a lab deep underground and you’d get a lift to different -20 freezers. (But yes RNA is more unstable - that might be trickier). But amplified sequenced dsDNA would a-okay! BLAST searching is amazing though, obviously a virtual library makes more sense ahahha
