More than 20 years after it first aired, how accurate is the fourth episode of Walking With Dinosaurs? Trey the Explainer joins me as we take a look at what Giant of the Skies got right or wrong and how much our understanding of palaeontology has changed in the last two decades.

For posterity: Ice Forest and Dynasty actually look like they came in just 2 months or so apart. And that while the episode on Dynasty had a massive run length. I guess the production of Ice Forest just got... frozen for a few winters. I'll let myself out.

My biggest problem with the series even back in the day was just how skinny they made the T-Rex. I mean this makes the JP rex look downright obese.

Fun Fact: Baryonyx and Cetiosaurus were to appear in this episode, but the former was presumably replaced with Utahraptor & the latter was scrapped entirely. I guess that would partially explain why we see Utahraptors in Europe. Strangely, Baryonyx's 3D model can be seen in some merch, such as the official sticker album.

@@gunternikodim6339 KZbin is very picky with links as most of the time they mistake them for spam. I can say that "The Making of Walking with Dinosaurs" is available on Dailymotion & Vimeo in its entirety. Also, just search "Walking With Dinosaurs: The Official Sticker Album" to see the unused Baryonyx & Cetiosaurus models. Though I think they just reused the Cetiosaurus model from the pilot episode.

They should've had both genera. Have the Utahraptors be the North American predators, while Baryonyx be the European predator. Plus, it would've been interesting to see how the WWD team at the time translate how Baryonyx could've fished & hunted terrestrial prey.

Props to you admitting the episode made you sad. I'll never forget my short tempered mother telling me off for crying at the last episode. I got weepy about our Pterosaur's death too, and I'm in my twenties last time I saw it. It reminded me too much of my rescue pigeon JonJon who was an old dominant male, bullied out of the flock by younger males. I found him in bad shape under a café table in the rain, not really caring about anything. After the episode was done I gave him a big cuddle. Heads up, Spirits of the Ice Forest is my favourite title of anything ever. It sounds so ethereal in nature and the score kind of captures that I feel.

Nice to have you onboard Trey! And yay, another "Walking With" episode. Or should I say, "Flying With." It's really bold of this show to give its lead character a tragic ending. Not only does it add some realism to the story, but it also emphasizes the brutality of nature, along the lead pterosaur bullying that smaller one for its food. As for the Utahraptor, its animatronic head always looked kind of goofy to me. It seemed more like a weird hand puppet rather than a believable animal. At least the patterns on its body were pretty cool.

@@samuelwhite1228 I know, I remember the paleo profiles. Then he spun off on tangents of debunking young Earth creationism, which I fully understand. because he used to be part of that group, to be fair so was I. Which is why I enjoyed the debunking. I enjoy his anthropology and environmental stuff. Though It would be nice if he would do a Paleo profile once in awhile.
