I do think there are some ethical concerns when it comes to these parasocial relationships. It is kind of insidious that Twitch is commodifying its' personalities as brands in order to monetize people with mental health issues (loneliness/depression). In the end it's not Twitch who suffers any of the downsides like death threats and unsolicited [anything]. There should be some more fail-safes in place to prevent this, especially on a platform that underage people can access. Though of course this just hurts their bottom line so It's not likely.

I let one of my longtime best friends (who happens to be a female) stay at my place for a couple weeks while she was in between jobs. We didn’t sleep together, do anything more romantic than play Mario kart while having a few beers, and it was overall just helping a friend out. I was mocked as a simp by both coworkers and a few friends for doing this, and honestly I hate the term now lol. You almost can’t have a platonic friendship with the opposite sex without the dude being labeled a simp, ah love the internet

@Speckadactyl I hear ya. I had a friend who was a model, grew up with her she was my best friend’s girl for a long time before she passed. She had a bad breakup with someone and i went to go chill with her. We were drinking and watching comedies on her bed and never crossed my mind to try and take advantage of that friendship and vulnerability. She started opening up and crying and i just gave her a hug and offered comfort. Straight platonic, it doesnt make you less of a man. It makes you a more of a decent person

You should have told them that you did get something out of it. You got a couple of weeks of hanging out with a friend and having fun playing with her. One thing that you didn't mention as far as the concept of a simp in pop culture is how in almost all popular media from childhood to adolescents we consistently see the "good guy" who "loves" some girl who either doesn't know he exists, doesn't like him or out and out dislikes him, and yet in the 3rd act of literally every single story where such a dynamic exists the guy "gets the girl". From Harry Potter to Star Wars and all spots in between. The irony is that those who actually penned these stories are likely people who felt that way towards girls in their adolescence but did not get the "happy ending". We are taught to persevere, to be the "good guy" and eventually the girl will "see your worth". It takes some MUCH longer than others to understand that is not how the real world works and undoubtedly has a real effect on why simps do what they do. Sure there are other, arguably bigger culprits like you mentioned e.g. entitlement, sexism, culturally enforced gender roles, blah blah gender studies degree (no offense to any gender studies degree holders).....but there is also a less insidious cause as well that does deserve a mention

It depends on your attitude and how you go about earning approval, rather than what you do necessarily. To provide an anecdote, most of the happiest couples I know featured women that mentioned when asked that their significant others "weren't their type", or didnt impress them much initially.

I think that the biggest thing you missed in this is that a lot of this comes from insecurity - the fear of being a "simp" or being a "beta". Calling someone one of those things can be a way of distancing yourself from those concepts, a way of placing yourself above the simp. It's pretty sad because a lot of terminally online guys seem to genuinely not believe it's possible to interact with a woman without either being a simp that grovels at their feet, or a chad who women immediately throw themselves at, which leads them to trying to make sure that everyone knows that of all things, "they are not a simp".
@ana-isabel

Really well said! I think my overview of one's desire to subscribe to the typical "chad/alpha male" image ties into this; but yes, a lot of this roots from insecurity issues for sure.

This is by far the biggest reason why I have a hard time relating to women even on a friend level. They either automatically think I am a creep because I am soft spoken or they ignore me due to gender norms. It is kinda hard because 90% of my coworkers are women. This might be difficult to do with KZbin’s guidelines, but it could be interesting to do a deep dive into “fetish culture”. So basically you're saying furries aren't a fetishised aesthetic? When I say 'fetishised aethetic', I mean furry porn is just regular porn but with animal-humanoid hybrids. BDSM isn't just an aesthetic, it's more active I'd say and in the moment, hence why I wouldn't call it 'porn'. I just don't get why you'd compare something people look like to something people actually do. AND I'm asking if people somehow ACTIVELY use furries in sex so it's actually comparable.

I agree with almost everything here but I think it's important to remember that there is a difference between a guy simping over a twitch streamer and a girl simping over a celeb. The difference is exemplified in the video even. People who simp over streamers communicate with them regularly, and have the opportunity to develope extremely unhealthy thoughts and behaviors relating to this avenue of communication.

I'll never understand giving money to a streamer. I only pay for both convenience and professionally created content (Steam, Netflix). That said, what other people do with their money is their business, unless it's an actual mental issue that compels you to do it, that should get treatment like any other mental illness. IMO the actual fact behind it all is that people get more and more disconnected and try to find social spaces where no reciprocity could exist or it's profoundly superficial and fleeting. And I say this a someone with zero (0) friends.
@leetri
@leetri 3 жыл бұрын
It's really no difference than paying for any other content. The streamer creates something that you perceive as valuable (entertainment), so you donate to show your appreciation of the content. They spent their time entertaining you, so you pay for their time with money. Generally it's just a nice gesture like "I've watched your content for several years, here's 20 bucks to show my appreciation", but sometimes it does take on more nefarious tones as outlined in the video.

Simps are usually born from desperation and loneliness. A lot of women are, in my opinion, unnecessarily cruel to these young guys, who are already down and out. Which leads to an acceleration into rage in their isolation. I feel for these men, because they buy into the idea promoted by the majority that you need to have a relationship to have fulfillment. Mgtow hates these guys because they're hopelessly drowning in a shallow pool they could simply step out of it, and find something better for themselves.

I think one of the most common usages of ‘simp’ I see online nowadays is when any man defends or agrees with a woman about anything especially if it involves feminism or something from a woman’s perspective. I think even the list of criteria you shared had the built-in capacity for the expanded more misogynistic definition - particularly "a female who doesn't bring anything to the table". The term simp is not just a put-down on the male in that usage, but also puts down the female he is simping for by implying that she's not worth it. So if you don't think women are worth anything, like MGTOWs do, then even the smallest gesture does qualify as simping. Just wanted to add that.

I think the internet and rise of streaming/video content has created more investible, "personal" feeling para-social relationships left and right. And that obviously extends to sexual or romantic relationships. Which also interacts with the uneven dynamics people may observe in the real world between the sexes in term of dating, and advantages they perceive other sex to have in that arena. I think a lot of less than sociable guys have gravitated towards the internet pretty naturally and a combination of community and these parasocial displays creeping into the space over time has created and codified these concepts. These people are drawn to attractive women "publicly" on the internet, but in turn, also many form a resentment. And its not even necessarily two completely separate groups. Although it generally is, I have literally witnessed people "simp" for lack of a better term for one attractive female in the online space, while becoming frustrated with the fans of several others and dismissing their actions and words as being form "simps" and not being valid. I think the personal connection they feel basically clouds their views and gives them a blind spot for "their guy" or girl. I think this resentment is not that uncommon as frustration with dating or relationship success can very easily lead someone down that thought process. That resentment of a perceived unfair female "power over weak men" in combination with their own lack of progress or "achievement" romantically is highly potent to some people, with the extreme endpoint causing them to hate women and any forms of non traditional masculinity expressed by men. So of course, the term very quickly gets a completely derogatory connotation.

You know I never heard the term SIMP until I left college back in 2013 and with the whole Elliot Roger thing I realized that there was a lot of confusion out there in the dating world. I never dated in my life and I can honestly say at 31 I don't see the point in having animosity towards a soul. Just like you mention you are responsible for your own happiness. I can't date but I found things in life that makes it fulfilling. I respect the MGTOW, Incel, and PUA people the same as I do Flat Earthers in the sense that they are lost people who want to find a place to belong. Something to identify with and have like minded people. Sure women confuse me but why waste my time hating them or have a bitter taste over men who are successful in dating? Life is too short man. Find your own lane and work with it. If you don't like something just avoid it and move on. Anyway great video!

Ross never really becomes a Simp, he always at least tries with the girl. Lets not mix up simping and just having a crush. You can crush after someone, its perfectly normal, attraction happens. Its only harmful behavior if you start doing nice things for that person in the hopes of ''getting'' with them. If you like someone, either tell them or move on. Ross does fail to tell Rachel early on but he also doesnt just hang around her, they both date before they eventually get together. His behavior afterwards......yea thats a total different mess. Lets just remember that the 90s had some different views, hence Gunter being a point of comedy rather than uncomfortable like he would be today. Amusingly yes Thanos in the comics is actually a total 100% simp. Not only did he do everything you mentioned but he is also the reason Deadpool cannot die in the comics because Lady Death actually fancies HIM instead. Deadpool doesnt just have a really strong healing factor in the comics, nope Thanos literally made him immortal because he be simping so hard.

Doctor Doom wants power to "save" the world from itself, Thanos doing it for "balance" seemed too similar. Making him a derranged psycho over Death makes it slightly more boring in motivation, but far easier to hate (and thus love to hate as the audience when we cheer for our heroes).

Terms like “simp” are just new slang for “sissy/girly/p-ssy” or anything that denotes feminine qualities in a male (which is anathema to insecure men). Such insecure men cannot/will not recognize that all psychological traits in humans exist within all of us, but based in a variety of life factors, individuals will express these traits in different ways and at differing levels. Yes, some traits/expressions will skew to various demographics but almost never in a wholly binary present/absent dynamic (such examples do exist but in numbers so small you can’t generalize those examples to ALL OF HUMANITY).

I disagree, if a guy likes “ insert typical female hobby” he wouldn’t be called a simp. It has nothing to do with expressing feminine qualities.
@TrueYellowDart
@TrueYellowDart 3 жыл бұрын
@@marshallgaming4422 If it stayed narrowly defined, you’d be mostly correct. But just like “cuck” it’s already becoming more generalized and devolving into a very vague “weak vs strong” dynamic. Simps, cucks, betas...these denote “you are not meeting the standards of masculinity”.
@marshallgaming4422
@marshallgaming4422 3 жыл бұрын
@@TrueYellowDart It’s true that improper utilization of these terms has led to an abstraction of their intended purpose. Ultimately the definition of a word is highly dependent upon the context and the individual using it. This also is true for nebulous concepts such as femininity and masculinity. I find it to be interesting that all of these terms focus on wether a man gets female validation. Cuck and simp are used to disparage men who demean themselves for female validation. While beta is a man who doesn’t receive female validation. All of them are rooted in the unhealthy idea that a mans worth is dependent upon receiving female attention. Honestly I don’t understand how these terms are related to feminine qualities, even when used in a broad sense. A trait that doesn’t meet the standards of masculinity doesn’t dictate that the trait is feminine. Calling someone a pussy is synonymous with cowardice. This comes from the stereotype of a cowardly woman. But does the term in its modern use imply that the target is female or that they’re a coward? I’d argue the latter, but the association is still present. If you could provide some hypothetical scenarios where simp, cuck, and beta are attributed to a man with feminine qualities I’d appreciate it, I’m stuck in my own definitions for the terms and can’t understand your position.
@TrueYellowDart

@@marshallgaming4422 As much as I’m glad to find a reasonable discussion in KZbin comments, I’m afraid I don’t have the time and patience to cite specific examples. All I will offer is from personal experience, which is also not relatable to the general population on its own merit. But I’ll offer this personal observation: from discussions I’ve had with others (irl or online) and conversations I’ve lurked on other forums, when the reasoning behind terminology like simp, cuck, etc is dug into, it inevitably arrives at terms like “weak, submissive, passive, irrational”: terms that have long been attributed as being “normal” for women to possess but abnormal for men. To put it another way, the implication is nearly always that the disparaged man has,“unmanly” or “feminine” qualities instead of the strong, “alpha-like” qualities that men should always strive for. Therefore my general thinking is that all language stating or even implying that a man lacks appropriate manly qualities means he instead has feminine qualities. I could absolutely be wrong, but the handful of...case studies, I guess is an appropriate term, have definitely led that conclusion.

I agree with ninety percent of these videos' research and discussion. You break down a lot of things in very good quality. However, I would suggest it may be a good idea to look into the MGTOW with a little less bias. While I don't personally consider myself an MGTOW person, I do have friends who do and have talked to people in those groups. The way you describe them is similar to the way others describe "Radical Feminists" and as we all know those sorts of personalities are often the minority of the groups, not the majority. Most of the people I know or have talked to in the MGTOW groups want basic things. Equal treatment in family law (such as parental issues, marriage, divorce), to have male abuse be recognized and treated with the same consideration as female abuse, recognition that false rape accusations exist, and the ability to protect themselves from it or dispute it, etc. they don't consider these things as more important than women's issues and do not believe they make women's issues less valid. From what I understand of MGTOW at least is just an intent to distance from the culture that currently is reinforcing that. similar to leaving an area when you feel things get heated or leaving a job because you are not being respected, which I would think most of us on the planet can sympathize with on some level at least.

This video was promoted on my subscription feed at least. I love these video essays, keep up the good work.

I really want someone to prove me wrong about how courts do not rule proceedings in favour of women most of the times. I really really do. Almost every divorced father I met in person or online hasn't seen their child in over 4-6 months.

One of the thing with simps id it requires a woman or person who is aware of a guy's feeling for them and uses that to get him to do things for her , but that require you to realize it takes two to create this toxic relationship.

The terms "alpha male" and "beta male" were termed from a scientific study that has since been retracted. It was originally used to describe wolf behavior in captivity (not human). The fact that it was about wolves, not humans, and retracted as unnatural, the terms are fallacious and should be retired. The people (usually men) using such terms need to be educated.

Twitch community hates simp-farm streamers for a solid reason - they change general vibe of website from being centered on gaming, art etc. to encouraging monetising on sexappeal. Maybe this is not bad on its own but I believe there is something lost in that process

It is bad on its own. It's the same thing that happened to Onlyfans, a place where fans could support their creators, has been turned into a softcore porn website. Twitch is the same now, to a less pornographic degree, but it's walking that line.

Ever since I was 12 all the way up till I was about 23 I had been a simp. I went through all the archetypal memes that are going around online I lived that out completely. Now I'm 29 years old and I've learned a lot. It's good to call out toxic behavior but understand that you yourself can be susceptible to the same thing no one is any better.
