I just got a Super NT and SD2SNES two weeks ago. I was fortunate enough to find someone selling those items together for half the price. However if i were to purchase the SD2SNES for the full price one of my main reasons would be instant loading over the regular everdrives. I found a video of a regular everdrive running and it looked like it took around 7-8 seconds to erase and rewrite/load a new game into the cart. Considering i like hopping from game to game allot when i play SNES those 8 seconds would be like an eternity. I really enjoy the menu of the SD2SNES coupled with the crisp image of the Super NT. It's really easy to use a hotkey to jump back into the menu and switch to another game. The cart also remembers the last 10 games you've played. For any fans of the SNES these two together are a must have. They are expensive, diffidently, if you only have like 1 or 2 games you've got nostalgia for then i wouldn't recommend it and id say get an emulator or an SNES mini. However if the SNES was a big part of your childhood like it was mine, then go for it.

Stone Age Gamer & KRIKzz do great work, bought myself a fully blinged out golden Everdrive N8 for Christmas and absolutely love it. Definitely getting an SNES flash cart from SAG some day too. Jealous of that Analogue console though, have to get on those (especially since region speeds are being an issue for me and my PAL NES). Good review, cheers. And Super Castlevania IV & NESticle... ❤

Beautiful overview Rich! It made me cry tears of joy because the Famicom was the first gaming console we ever owned and it was good hearing a mention of it again. Moreover, I could only imagine how different the gaming landscape would've been if that collaborative effort between Nintendo and Sony actually came into fruition. I'm thankful that that didn't happen and that we're able to enjoy a very diverse and developing industry with many jobs and IPs being put forth.

I've had one of these for nearly 6 years and I highly recommend it. SuperFX support is in fact coming and has beta firmware available for it. Rich also forgot to mention the support for BS-X and Cx4 (Mega Man X2 and X3) games. Star Ocean only works on the SD2SNES due to a special chip, SDD-1 (currently unsupported), that uncompressed the data on the fly, and a ROM hack that already uncompressed the data makes it 12MB. Which makes it too big for even the Super Everdrive. If you don't have any interest in these games what so ever, then getting the Super Everdrive is also a viable option.

Also, this may not appeal to all but the SD2SNES seems to be the only flashcart compatible with CX-4 chip games like Mega Man X2 & X3. Which both of those games would average at least $300 for the carts alone.

They're well worth the money. I've was one of first ones to own a SD2SNES. Due to recently developments, they can now play SuperFX games but it still missing support SA-1 chip games. Games that have been patched for MSU1 are amazing because they have orchestrated soundtracks added and sometimes even FMV.

It does work with Super FX as of a few months ago. There are beta releases of that online on forums as it isn't publicly released by Krikzz. The version I tried was about 10% slower than the real game but it is coming along. Yoshi's Island & Star Fox worked just fine when I compared them to the real game.

I'd argue that the "true vinyl experience" (I love that you said that, by the way, as I have recently started buying both records and SNES cartridges recently) is the original carts. Playing ROMs off an SD card is nice if you just want to try the games out before buying, but if I like a game, I want the cart. Not saying I wouldn't buy an SD2SNES, I definitely will. Thing is freaking awesome.

The Super FX chip has recently been made compatible with the SD2SNES, and is being integrated into the official firmware as I type. There’s also the matter of the support for games like Mega Man X2 and X3 and Top Gear 3000 that are exclusive to the SD2SNES.
@Teapose
@Teapose 6 жыл бұрын
Important to note, custom firmware on the Super NT does allow for some cartridge/backup ripping, with limited SD playback similar to Super Everdrive, just doesn't support any special chips (Mega Man X2/3 for instance). So instead of downloading ROMs, you could play with your own backups instead. Not sure on portability from whatever the SNT rips to other media such as Super Everdrive/SD2SNES.

Cool for anyone who likes it, and obviously I have been aware of SD2SNES for awhile, but honestly original software is more important than even original hardware for the true retro feel. Up to personal preference, obviously. I love cleaning carts when I buy them and putting them in my 1 chip SNES with HD Retrovision component cables on the old CRT. Sublime.

I've been playing Yoshi's Island on mine. Brilliant game, even if it gets a little tedious near the end there. The only downside I see is the lack of SA-1 support. Oh, and a lot of SMW hacks don't work, but I've been told that was because they were made and tested with older, crappy emulators, so they won't run on real hardware. Bummer.

Great review! I look forward to your video dedicated to the Analogue Super NT. I purchased a SD2SNES over the Super Everdrive DSP for a couple of reasons. Along with being a fellow Super Castlevania 4 fan, I'm also a fan of the Mega Man X series and the SD2SNES supports the CX4 chip (Megaman X2 and X3) while the Super Everdrive does not. Also, the SD2SNES uses PSRam while the Everdrives use flash rom which I read has a limited number of erases/re-writes while PSRam doesn't have this limitation. Mind you it's a high number of re-writes (I think most say its around 100,000). Ikari is also working on adding the functionality of the Super FX chip and also the SA-1 chip in future revisions of the firmware which would open up even more of the library. I also used NESticle back in the day, how far has emulation come since then eh? I always look forward to your videos, so keep up the great work! Sorry for the book sized comment! Have a good one!

SD2SNES can also play Satellaview games, but only if you have a Fat SNES. Doesn't work on clones or the slim model, maybe due to lack of some components related to the expansion port. I've played Zelda BS-X, which is a 16bit remake of Zelda 1, and some of Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets, which is like an expansion of A Link to the Past
