Further info on Mega EverDrive Pro audio: Because MDFourier was used late in the production of the Mega SD, the sound could not be perfectly matched to a real Sega CD due to design limitations. The Mega EverDrive Pro used MDFourier from the beginning and was crafted so that it can accurately match the original hardware sound quality.

You forgot to mention that the Master Everdrive x7 in game menu, while it doesn't work on the PowerBase converter, does work on the Analogue Mega SG via the included Master System adapter.

Accuracy is something to strive for, but it is not always better in some cases. I prefer the sound of the MegaSD over a real CD system and the Mega Everdrive Pro.

Just imagine time traveling and handing your younger self a chip the size of a fingernail with EVERY game on it. We are a bit jaded when it comes to modern consoles and feeling like tech isn't changing much but it truly is mind blowing the leaps that have been made.

I think the biggest leap we will ever see has already happened and it was between the sixteen bit systems such as snes and the 32 bit PlayStation. Now when a new console is released it seems very subtle.

@@snoochpounder that's because now game consoles are altered computers who have to be the best for a acceptable price. But the true "jaw dropping" evolution is on 3000$ PC's. Then, computer were obviously more powerful but they lacked where game consoles excelled. Notably plateformer were better on console because the scrolling on computer was very difficult to do. Also there's nearly no good fighting game on Amiga or Atari ST. Now it's always better to have a computer (but priciest) besides exclusives.

@@snoochpounder The PS4 era was very underwhelming. I was expecting it to be phenomenal like PS3 was but it was a very minor improvement. I think that is because we have reached a point of diminishing returns in terms of graphics. Games like Gran Turismo 5 already looked very close to reality back in 2010.

@@JeanRodo They use to be... we would take old carts (NES, N64 etc) and goo gone the labels off and then spray paint them for custom colors... the premium NES ones were very tedious and time consuming because I had to tape off the various sides for the black stripe and stuff. Confirmed. Numbers 3 and 4 are currently inbound for me as well- Master, 64, Mega, and SD2 (or whatever it's called now). What I didn't anticipate is how much it would take the wind out of my sails from a collecting standpoint. The 64 was the first I grabbed due to the abysmal options as far as emulation and cloning. As such, there has been a lot of times I've found it difficult to justify costs for games for a console I pretty much "have everything" for in the form of an ED. Now, I try to make it a point to not "drive up" until I've gotten my collection for a given console to a point I'm happy with.

Save state support by Furious on the SD2SNES has been available in a non-official firmware for a long time, maybe since 2018. Now you can find a non-official firmware that includes both the latest SGB support as well as save states. Save states only work with non-special chip games, however, and there can be audio quirks (audio tracks not changing between saving/loading states).

Yeah, the audio quirks are why I'm hoping Krikzz adds official save state support. I have to imagine they have the means to make it a bit more stable, and that's probably why it's taking so long to add them. I also wonder if the states on the custom firmware are imperfect in other ways. Like for instance, if I load saves for speedrun practice while I'm trying to do RNG manipulation, I wonder if because it's not a true save state, the RAM values might be off somehow. I don't own an FXPAK to try it out because save states would be like 90% of why I'd want one.

Extremely informative, as always. I'm really lucky to have stepping into the flash cart scene when I did (SD2SNES Pro/N64 3.0 era). The only cart I've ever felt compelled to replace was going from a Mega Drive X7 to the MegaSD for SegaCD support. Even then, the X7 was still a very complete product in its own right. Unless the market surprises me with more things I didn't know I needed, this collection is going to last me a very long time.

Good review on the Everdrive X7 for N64. I dislike how you completely skipped over the niche, yet thriving Nintendo 64 Homebrew scene, and the use of the USB port, which has been a godsend for developers like us. I do wish MLiG would do a video showcasing the strides homebrew devs are doing with the console, in 2020. There is many information, and other related links on n64.dev (resources etc). It would bring an even wider audience towards N64 Development, and dispel myths that "everything was done in assembly language" (many N64 games were created in C language.)

Great video! I've been hesitant to put down the money on a flash cart, but with all the development and additional features going on plus the climbing prices of original cartridges, I've been reconsidering. The one flash cart I have is for a system you don't mention here. I have the Harmony cartridge for the Atari 2600, and I really enjoy using it especially for playing homebrews and hacked ROMs that can push the lowly 2600 to do things Atari developers never even thought possible. I know you guys don't often dive into pre-NES systems, but I would love to see your take on the Harmony, Harmony Encore, and UNO flash carts for the Atari 2600.

My NES and N64 Everdrive are last gen and im happy with them for now. I will be upgrading Genesis and SNES flash cart some time next year for extra features and faster load times. I have a decent amount of retro games in my collection. Flash carts have allowed me to play rare expensive games and more. *"I have an older SD2SNES that doesn't support most special chip games."* Not entirely true. The original SD2SNES can support every special chip that has been implemented in the firmware thus far. The only thing that the original SD2SNES cannot do, compared to the Pro version, is SA-1 + MSU1 simultaneously.

Added note regarding Master everdrive: it will also play SG-1000 roms, while the genesis version does not. That alone was the reason I grabbed mine for the Master System despite master system compatibility on the genesis version. Admittedly, sg-1000 is not something a lot of people are chomping at the bit for, but worth mentioning.

If you're looking to play SegaCD and 32X and you're not worried about OG hardware, the Everdrive is a good on-ramp to see if you want to take the dive, and a good route to reduce wear and tear

The everdrive N8 pro is definitely worth the upgrade, for the save states and in game menu alone. The powerpak had an advantage until the N8 pro release. Yes, upgrade!

The SD2SNES/FXPAK Pro may have had THE coolest additions as of late compared to any other flash cart. It now supports SA-1 speed hacks, a full Super Gameboy core and Save States that work for both SNES and Super Gameboy titles. Heck, there's even MSU-1 support for Gameboy titles now!

Given the trend of flash carts, the next logical step for the FX PAK Pro is to incorporate an NES emulator. (And, if we're feeling really apocalyptic and have the FPGA/otherwise cart space for it, MSU-1 support for the NES emulator so that we can watch God weep as we play the original Donkey Kong with an orchestral remastered soundtrack)

I just had a thought! Mega SD for plain ROM SMS games. Or for those who have Stereoscopic 3D games like me, get the Powerbase Converter since it has the card slot. Not so sure how I can fit a Powerbase Converter on my Wondermega RG-M1 though.

As much as I enjoy playing on real hardware, it's the reason I finally got around to buying a Pseudo Saturn cart for the English translations of games such as Grandia and the final two parts of the Shining Force 3 Trilogy after all, the price of Everdrives just make me balk at the very idea of buying one. Emulation might not be quite the same but it does fill the itch for playing games and wouldn't break my wallet at the same time.

Plus, this *is* emulation, especially for stuff like SNES games with enhancement chips. It's very, very good hardware-backed emulation, but it's still only as accurate as it was programmed to be.

@@mikeytappe People's hearing rolls off at different frequencies at different times. That being said, hearing usually doesn't diminish past 13k or so I believe (naturally anyway) and this sounded a bit below that to me, so they probably could hear it.

So MSU-1 in SA1 games is exclusive to the FXPak Pro? That explains so much. I had no idea why the MSU-1 audio in Talking Parodius and the Kirby games wasn't working, I'm so glad it wasn't something I was doing wrong.
