The Sea Hawk from 1940. This one was amazing. Let's just dive right in. Credit roll and oh man Erick Korngold music! A rousing, energetic opening theme, as the credits appear across footage of a sailing ships! It's got Errol Flynn as the swashbuckling hero, gorgeous actress Brenda Marshall, and it's directed by Michael Kurtiz! Oh man, this one's gonna be good!

Henry Daniell's final film appearance was in 1964's "My Fair Lady." He filmed a scene where the Professor takes Liza to the embassy ball. Daniell played "the Ambassador' in an uncredited role. He finished his scene and went home, not feeling well. He died of a heart attack a few hours later on Halloween, October 31, 1963.

“Now we English are a practical people.” The English🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 ships were smaller, and sat lower in the water. Consequently they literally ran rings around the Spanish🇪🇸 ships. And their cannon balls hit the Spanish hulls below the waterline, sinking them quicker. And Brenda Marshall was so beautiful.😍

Actually some of the English ships were larger than some of the Spanish ships AND they carried cannon with longer ranges. The Spanish strategy was to close with the enemy, especially during the Armada...their ships were crammed with soldiers. The English kept their distance. In the first engagement, the English fleet moved parallel to the Spanish left flank. The Spanish dropped their topsails which was generally a signal that they were prepared to engage at close range. The English kept up their sails, went right on by and hammered the Spanish from long range. The blood from the Spanish ships was seen pouring out of the scuppers. However the Spanish maintained their formation and the English at the time spoke rather highly of the seamanship the Armada showed. Only later did the myth of the "little English gadflies beating the big slow Spanish" come up. The Spanish only lost three ships out of their 117 ships. The English had a larger fleet (226 ships) and although the Spanish had more guns, most of their cannon were smaller weight "man killers," designed for close in combat. The English had fewer but heavier long range guns, "ship smashers." The Spanish maintained control until they reached Calais, when the threat of English fireships caused them to cut their cables and run east and then north. The winds made it impossible to turn back and the Armada sailed completely around the British Isles and Ireland through rough seas. Only 66 ships made it back to Spain, the rest sunk or run aground in the return. Many of the ships that did make it back were no longer seaworthy.

Two really good actors appearing in the film in minor roles. Gilbert Roland as the Spanish Captain Lopez in the first battle scene and as Thorpe's captor in Panama. And William Lundigan as a crewmember of the Albatross. A good actor cast in far too many B movies.

This was the last film that Flynn and Curtiz did together. Supposedly in his thirst for "realism," Curtiz had the protective tips removed from the swords and several actors were injured. Flynn was outraged and, according to his granddaughter, he actually wrapped his hands around Curtiz's throat and threatened to give him a taste of "realism" for real. They finished the film and never worked together again. Another possible reason for the friction between the two. Curtiz's second wife was Lili Damita. The two were married for 2 years from 1925 to 26. In 1935, just as Flynn was hitting stardom, Flynn married Damita. Apparently the marriage was quite tempestuous and Flynn divorced her in 1942. Two men married to the same woman and speculation has it that Curtiz didn't exactly like the way Flynn was treating his former wife. Who knows.

That's some wild background! Thanks for sharing. I remember reading that Flynn and Curtiz didn't get along so with what you shared that makes a lot of sense why!

Flora Robson also played the Chinese Empress in the big budget "55 Days at Peking" (1963). Big flop too, in spite of a great cast.

This film isn't as well-known as some Flynn but it's very stylish and fun.

@@Mr_Kenneth well known to film buffs, but I think Captain Blood and the Advenrures of Robin Hood are more famous. Anyway, I love the Sea Hawk.
