Distinctive architecture, uninhibited ocean views, bold supergraphics, shared open space, and meditative tranquility - these were the beginnings of The Sea Ranch, a beacon of Modernism on the Northern California coast. Designed by a small group of Bay Area architects and designers in the early 1960s, the development was envisioned as a progressive, inclusive community, guided by the idealistic principles of good design, economy of space, and harmony with the natural environment. Their vision of utopia hit a snag as it collided with politics, economics and drift from the original plan, but the present-day character still reflects the pioneering efforts of those who imagined it.

This has been my favorite place for over 40 years. I’ve celebrated family reunions, anniversaries, my honeymoon, friend gatherings at Sea Ranch. It is a very special place.

Sea Ranch is an environmental/architectural anomaly. Hands down one of the most beautiful places in the entire world. I hesitate to say that it is my favorite place on Earth, but really there is nowhere like it. This place epitomizes the idealized vision of what Northern California is truly about. The scenery is like no other. For those who love nature and design, this is probably your Mecca.

Agree. It’s really reassuring to see that some things can still be kept sacred.

The Sea Ranch was an architectural and planning marvel 60 years ago and remains so today. Hard to believe how revolutionary and audacious the design of Condominium #1 was since it has been repeated innumerable times and with generally much less success around the U.S. and around the world since then. Definitely worth a visit to anyone interested in both architecture and the environment. Thanks for uploading!

Just stayed on the north end for four days, and I continue to be impressed by how The Sea Ranch Association is maintaining the legacy of the founders. Our group was contacted by a TSRA security guard because we draped two brightly colored beach towels over the porch wall.Of course we gladly complied with his request. If a community wants to be natural, it must have enforcement!

Yes…maybe a bit “stuffy” to some but this is the place people come to in order to experience a near immersion in the natural and the details matter.

Had the luxury of staying here for a week and have never seen such beauty. Deer walked by the house every night. There's no concrete in this place, no garages (that I saw) and all outdoor light must be sheilded and pointed downward. I stepped outside in the middle of the night and saw the clearest view of the milky way just outside the door. The sunsets...got to walk among the original walk up units also and got to see inside of a few, not spartan.

I used to live in qualala and drove past the area wishing I had one of those homes they’re so beautiful and I like his idealism about the common homes..I want a home like this so bad!!

シーランチカッコいい!そして中が素敵なんだよなぁ。 設計の御代がまさかの日本の民家の影響受けていたとら知らなかったからビックリしましたよ。マジか。。( ̄▽ ̄;)と。

they shouldn’t have allowed so many homes in the meadows nor should they have allowed homes as big as they have gotten on the north side.. unfortunate things aren’t codified enough so as long as the design committee approves it it’s approved
