Another fantastic Sea Trout session on the fly earlier last week, Thankfully we managed to find the perfect opportunity to sink a few flies in the hope of catching a Sea Trout. I couldn’t believe how many of them were jumping, it was absolutely amazing to watch. Luckily we managed to land a few great conditioned fish and of coarse a few Mackerel. A great day had by all, Looking forward to next one!

That looks like perfect conditions for fishing. I have never fished fore them in salt water but I guess it is similar to fishing for them in the lochs of the Western Isles where there is no river current to tire them out. I noticed that you were fishing with a Greys rod I also always fish with a Greys rod my weapon of choice is the Platinum XD 11 ft 7 weight which they no longer make but with a lifetime Guarantee hopefully it will see me out. When I was the Ghillie for a well known Glasgow car dealer a number of years ago on a hill loch on the Gleneagles Estate he was struggling to throw a line with his set up I loaned him my XD and he was putting a line out with ease. He subsequently offered me the chance to sell it to him which I declined without hesitation as it and I had too many memories of catching Sea Trout & Salmon on the many estates on the Western Isles to give it away. Sadly due to a hand tremor my days of fishing are behind me but those memories will always be with me and maybe one of my two sons or grandson will pick up the rod in the future and catch some more sea trout or hopefully salmon if the downturn in stocks can be reversed. Tight lines.

Hi John glad you like the video. Yeah the conditions were definitely on our side that day, if you can get a good day with good conditions and the fish are showing it’s a very enjoyable fishing experience going for sea trout in the salt! I can imagine you must have seen a fair few fish on the western isles back in the day. It truly is a shame what has happened to the West coast rivers/fisherys, I would have loved to be able to fish it and enjoy it in its prime because I really think it would be hard to beat the west coast back in those days. The rod I was using is Greys GR60 10ft 7wt and it does cast a line out lovely. Greys/hardy rods really are great just a pain to get replacement blanks if they don’t produce or keep bits for them anymore but hopefully that won’t be an issue! Tight lines mate

@@theanglingfront Just to make you a little jealous my best day was on one of the Amhuinnsuidhe lochs at the end of the Grimersta system on The Isle of Harris (Season 2004) where we had over fifty Sea Trout to the boat. Myself and one other angler with only one fishing at any time and the other manning the oars. I remember still gently rocking slightly as I attempted to get to sleep in my bed that night and intermittently tightening into an imaginary fish.

That's very interesting...I caught a similar looking fish on a Loch with buttery brown belly....I wasn't sure if it was a Sea trout but now I'm convinced....especially by the plumpness and deep red gills...your video is Complete evidence that they are not all totally silver in the Sea . I have also caught settled sea trout in the same Loch that are " Blacker" as well as smaller brown trout.,......Great video and commentary.
@theanglingfront
@theanglingfront 13 күн бұрын
Hi Adrian, thanks for the comment mate! I think it depends on where you are fishing and the time of year. Some sea trout don’t leave the brackish water if the feeding is good and will just feed in and around the estuary. Some will go along the coast line to feed and become proper bright silver. Could also be a kelt that’s recently spawned. At the end of the day they are both the same fish😂 Tight lines mate!

Hi Darren, these are Infact sea run brown trout. They are brown trout that are born in the fresh water and migrate to sea(up coast or in estuary’s/lochs near there native river) to feed and return to the rivers they were born in.

@theanglingfront
@theanglingfront 9 күн бұрын
@@DarrenClark-f5zYeah you are right, some trout will hang about the estuary and surrounding lochs to feed and stay in brackish water and will return to the river to spawn and stay in the region of the estuary/lochs. People call them slob trout. Also at this time of year and with all this rain you will get trout that are getting ready to spawn and hanging about the “burn estuary’s” that will also slightly colour up. These fish weren’t caught in an estuary, they were caught close but they were in a sea loch. As you say could be a slob trout that has travelled a bit for good feed but at the end of the day, it’s the same species and it has went to the sea to feed but due to the brackish water it hasn’t adapted fully and took on the silver colour you are talking about. Half and half per se.
