From meditation and Zen koans to the puzzles of seeking enlightenment, Paul touches on how nonduality loves to slip past structured thinking and neat narratives. With a mix of personal reflections, ancient wisdom, and some deep philosophical questions, the conversation flows through ideas like the nature of self, the shifting sands of identity, and how nonduality lives beyond time, space, and all the concepts we’re used to.

Depersonalization-derealization disorder: occurs when you always or often feel that you're seeing yourself from outside your body or you sense that things around you are not real - or both. Feelings of depersonalization and derealization can be very disturbing. You may feel like you're living in a dream.

It depends on the feeling. I once had that sensation and it was fun and freeing. But if you feel alienated or down or scared then it´s more of the mind.

I’ve experienced it for months and months, actually years. What Paul is talking about is NOT the same thing. Really, it’s the direct opposite. It’s weird-depersonalization, it seems to me, happens when the “I” mediates *all* experience, leading to solipsism. In psychoanalytic terms, this is called secondary narcissism, and is an effect of psychosis. I’m more equipped to talk about DPDR using psychoanalytic language than the DSM-5 diagnosis, but yes, it’s incredibly disturbing and awful. If anyone reading this is experiencing a distressing depersonalization, you’re not experiencing any kind of spiritual reality. That’s a trap I fell into for a while-thinking that although I was depersonalized, it must be “the nondual reality” these speakers are talking about. It is NOT-there’s no such thing as “the nondual reality.” Just keep that in mind. Thanks for mentioning DPDR, though. I think there’s a very specific demographic of people, like myself, who can get their wires crossed and confuse a disorder for a spirituality. Stay safe out there everyone, love you :)

@@birdwatching_u_backYou would know what it is because you will have no concept of depersonalization or even dissecting it. There are no concepts and you will never understand it with the mind. Do not mislead and perpetuate fear towards others because your mind is creating narratives of what enlightenment is.

@@birdwatching_u_back For me this apparent realization that these nondual teachers talk about is not separate from depersonalization. There is this experience or feeling of I Am. Which feels as pure beingness or aliveness. Everyone feels that when their mind is quiet. But then teachers will tell people that in this ‘state’ there could be discovered that the individual you thought you were is an illusion. And is nothing more than a contracted energy in the body. Of course that is how it will be experienced eventually when you constantly hear this pre-given interpretation of what this I Am experience really is. It becomes your reality. But is that the deeper underlying reality of life or are you now just slowly and unknowingly becoming depersonalized?

Zen koans were used to stop thinking; not to make profound statements about reality.

What are the problems with non-duality as a concept? ChatGPT said: ChatGPT Non-duality, the idea that reality is fundamentally unified and that distinctions like self and other are illusions, faces several conceptual challenges: Practicality: It can be difficult to reconcile with everyday experiences of individuality, where people feel distinct emotions, make choices, and experience personal consequences. Philosophical critique: Critics argue it may lack empirical verifiability and fail to provide actionable explanations for complex phenomena like suffering, morality, or social structures. Cultural interpretation: Non-duality is interpreted in diverse ways across traditions, sometimes leading to conflicting views or misunderstandings.

Non-duality is a well developed tradition within Hinduism called Advaita Vedanta. It is incompatible with Abrahmic religions. Not sure why he would not say it upfront.
